Though Greek and Roman schools existed, they were scarce and more for the elite. Not surprising, it was Christianity that put schools on the map and especially for the average person. Teachers teaching the Bible, “awakened in their pupils great love of learning.” From the early monasteries, the Bible along with many other secular subjects including Aristotle and the sciences were being taught to the common adult and child. This book is not a religious book but it doesn’t avoid giving the Bible the credit it’s due. The translated bible “fixed the literary standard of the German language… just as Wycliffe’s translation” did (for English). Over 15,000 schools of the Benedictine order by the year 1000 AD, quite a record. “Holland had excellent preparation for the new school spirit aroused by the reformation.” And the Puritans starting schools and universities as soon as they landed in America. The book also contains a modest and well written history of the origin of the Jesuits, one thing I never knew or read on before.England, Spain, Germany, Italy France and others always taught Latin for religion’s sake in addition to their native tongues, setting a universal language never equaled even by today’s atheistic scientists and their failed attempt with “Esperanto.” Even adults and teachers that were concerned with improving the teaching methods of those times were nearly always highly religious, well informed and most intelligent. Why else would these be the nations that produced the best scientists (and also were believers in God) in the world?Reading the curriculums for the schools back then, they certainly taught and learned more rigorously than today’s schools (but naturally not present-day knowledge), again not just religion but other subjects including gym classes for exercise. No wonder many students back then were enrolled in Universities in their 14th and 15th years of age.The first half of the book considers the origin of school (even the horrors of the Spartans), while the last half highlights the refinements of school teaching methods. An excellent book for the background of the “whys” and “hows” of today’s modern schools. By 1800s many parents still didn’t send their children to school even when they were plentiful. It took Europe and American Lawmakers to successfully make it a law to send kids into schools. By this time schools were becoming more specific and demanding to industrial traits and needs, yet the Christian religion still spearheaded and created schools for deaf, dumb, blind and other handicapped children. How sad and foolish it is when people blast and mock the Bible and God, trying to claim Christians are uneducated and hold back scientific progress when factual history shows there is are multitudes of genuine concerned Christian individuals that Mothered, birthed and nurtured schools and education! Having no gratitude is one thing but to turn on them and oppose them is criminal.

The book has a fair number of small typos and an odd mixture of present and past tense --although I did not find it overly distracting. On the positive side, the story is engaging and moves at a nice pace with a healthy amount of action. The author uses a nice blend of tech and creates an interesting universe. If you are looking for a first offering that is well priced with good length and action--this book does not disappoint. If, however, you demand a more polished read--you might pass this one by. I enjoyed the read and will purchase the next book in the series.

“I will follow you to hell. You will never control any treasure and your army is dead where they stand. I promise you I will reach down from the heavens and take each of their lives”. Imagine for a moment you are skiing downhill racing ahead of an avalanche, your chest is pounding, pulse racing. That is what you will experience reading this story as the momentum builds, and your heart beats faster and faster. You will be absorbed into the lives of the characters, becoming a part of the action even after the ending. There are struggles between honor and greed, right and wrong, battlefields are soaked crimson over them. It makes you think and question ‘What if?’ due to the possibilities and theories contained within. It is purely fictional though based on a trilogy of poems I wrote. While hiking in Europe, Christian finds a unique rock formation resembling a rose hidden in shadows. While camping in the shadows, Christian hears the voice of a ghost telling a magnificent tale of times long past. The voice of Sir Rowan Baldin of the Knights Templar, born out of the aftermath of the Templar purge in France 600 years prior. Rowan’s lineage managed to escape the purge to what is now known as Switzerland. There they helped shape a country while protecting their Templar roots in absolute secrecy. Rowan uses dreams and leads Christian on a fast paced adventure throughout Europe. Christian stumbles onto a number of remarkable discoveries, and is knighted by the modern day Templars he uncovers on his quest. Christian finds who he was meant to be. The Templars, these once ‘warrior monks’ are brought out of the shadows, and their reputation redeemed as their real story is told. This book is not suitable for children due to graphic nature of violence and adult situations. This is my first novel.

Easy to read and easy to picture in my mind. The second part was like it had been written by someone else. Nor was it believable. Too many narrow escapes, too many superlatives. The only really interesting part was the very end.

Being, Essence & Motion is an Aikido memoir of thoughts, ideas and training tips I have accumulated from almost 40 years of study and training. The book is not intended as a training manual.Rather my intent is to shed some light on the internal changes that have been wrought in me as a result of my long term commitment to the study of this Art. I have grouped my observations into three categories: Being, Essence and Motion. While some entries may easily fall into one or more of the categories, I have done my best to slot each into the category that provides the best fit.It is my hope that anyone reading this book may gain some insight into how the long term study of any discipline can foster personal growth and change. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. immerse yourself in motion on a page! By Kim T. Rivers A very beautiful rendering of one person's thoughts and experience about aikido into words. No easy task as the martial art of aikido is about flow and motion, but Ron Ragusa takes a lifetime of dedicated experience and traverses the divide of physical movement into the movement of words on a page. His writing is that of a poet, yet is also practical. He takes very challenging concepts found in a complex martial art and brings them to life through descriptions of nature, science, and everyday activities of life. It is a very personal journey we are being given privy to in this ebook, yet is also one that any aikido practitioner will recognize. This is also so much more than just a book about aikido. I'd say it's a must have for those who love the intricacies and delight of movement, be it a martial art, dance, or yoga as well as those who savor the written word.

Rexy is going through uneasy days. He is moody and closed up; he is angry at everyone and doesn’t share the emotional turmoil that is happening inside him with anyone. Rexy’s friends respond to his mood and shut him away and he feels even more alone. The cycle in which Rexy is trapped, feeds itself and in order to cheer him up, we must break the cycle. In the house of the thousand mirrors, a thousand dogs are angry at Rexy. They are angry because he is angry. When he wiggles his tail, a thousand dogs greet him with a smile. This is exactly how the world reacts. Hope you choose your positive being with a smile:) Sharon

How to choose positive being - Rexy and The House of Mirrors: How to teach children the effect of positive being (Happiness and positive attitude series for children and parents Book 3), by Sharon Bloch

About the Author My name is Sharon Bloch and for the past 25 year I have been working as a teacher and an educator, from kindergarten to early teens. For many years I was both a kindergarten teacher, as well as a director of several educational institutions and channels. My proffesional career encompasses 15 years of hands-on education, pedagogic management, educational program development and orchestration. Over the past few years, other than tutoring, I became a certified coach and started coaching groups and individuals. My area of expertise is children and parenting, and my vision and mission is to help children and adolescents learn a positive way of thinking by means of guiding them to discover the happiness within them. The way I view it - Happiness is not only one's emotion but rather a way of "being" which I believe allows a positive way to deal with life's challenges, obstacles and difficulties. Given my long-term educational exposure and experience, I developed along the years many stories that became very helpful and instrumental in my work with children. With the help of these stories, I managed to teach children the positive ways to contain and address negative feelings such as anger, frustration, sadness, jealousy etc. which are often suppressed inside rather than exposed to deal with Two years ago I was fortunate to volunteer and later be accepted as a foster mother for a very young baby. This experience prolonged for about two years till he was taken away back to his family; creating a very traumatic detaching experience. This was a key and meaningful personal catalysis change in my life. As part of my mission, I decided to translate and illustrate my stories as I truly believe they can help children develop and learn to cope with daily problems.

1918 dawns desolate over the fields of Flanders. Decimated by the worst war the world has ever seen, neither British nor German troops can break the deadlock of the trenches. After four years of murderous stalemate, peace seems buried for ever. But finally, one by one, the guns fall silent...By the Green of the Spring relives the last terrible months of the Great War and the uneasy, exhausted peace which followed it. From the North-West Frontier to the war in France and the civil war in Ireland, John Masters follows the fortunes of four Kent families – the Cates, the Rownlands, the Strattons and the Gorses – through the cataclysm that ended the golden Edwardian dream for ever.By the Green of the Spring, first published in 1981, is the third, self-contained volume of the Loss of Eden trilogy, a magnificent conclusion to an enthralling epic of war and peace by a major contemporary novelist.

By the Green of the Spring By Petermac John Masters has that rare ability to bring the characters in the book to life.An enthralling novel about the changes brought about in the period of the First World war and its horrors and the effect on everyones lives thereafter. I found it difficult to put the book down once I had started. Brilliant. If possible I would recommend you read the Trilogy in order.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Another gem from John Masters. By RAOCRAY This final book in the trilogy was a perfect finale to Master's' magnum opus. The reading of thee first two is an important factor to the full enjoyment of this fast moving historical novel. Anyone interested in the real horrors of World War 1 and its effects on the lives and social changes In a class controlled society cannot afford to miss this classic. As an ex-soldier born in this particular rural setting I can identify with most of the characters and, more importantly, the validity of the fact that all the event could have happened within this real historical framework..I enjoyed every second of it and couldn't give any book a stronger recommendation.

“Lark recounts…the sometimes peaceful, sometimes uneasy relationship between the Maori natives and the pakeha―the colonists. And the land, which can be rocky and formidable and also breathtakingly beautiful, is as much a character as anyone else." ―Historical Novel Society

New Zealand, 1893: William Martyn is better educated and more cultivated than the other men breaking their backs searching for gold near Queenstown. William is the son of landed Irish nobility, and he comes to town ready to invest in the best equipment. On his search for supplies, he encounters spirited and beautiful young Elaine O’Keefe, who promptly falls in love with him. He is captivated by her charms until Kura, Elaine’s half-Maori cousin, comes to visit. William succumbs at once to Kura’s exotic beauty and free-spiritedness, and tension develops not only between the two cousins but also between the colonial settlers and their Maori neighbors.

Review “I lost myself in the first book and am happy to say I was equally engrossed in the second…Lark does not stint on richly drawn characters. To anyone who may be dismayed by the book’s length, trust me, you’ll wish it was even longer. I eagerly await the next installment.” —Historical Novels Review

Like the first novel in the series, the characters are very well developed - both the heroes and the villains. And there see villains! The author did a good job of carrying the original characters forward, and I appreciated the subtle reminders about who some of the characters were - it's been a while since I read the first book. I so appreciate how the author brings New Zealand near the turn of the 20th century alive - love it.

Song of the Spirits By Sandy G Read the first book of this series "In the Land of the Long White Cloud" and could not wait for this book to come out. I pre-ordered it for my Kindle and it downloaded as soon as it was available. Such a neat idea. I am about half way through this book and am enjoying it as much as the first. I hope there will be a third in this series. This is just my kind of read and it is difficult to put it down when I start reading. It takes place in the 1800"s and I so enjoy books of that era.

A sweet, sensual tale of love and survival amidst chaos, despair... and zombies. In Ann Arbor, Michigan, Kevin Williams has a problem. The grid is down, humanity is on the brink of annihilation, and zombies walk the streets, hungry for human flesh. But that’s not the problem. He’s well stocked with food, water, and alcohol. His array of solar panels provides electricity to grow fresh food in his hydroponic garden and power his few electronics. He’s safe, secure, and well fed. But his problem haunts his dreams and fills his waking hours with dread. His terrifying problem: He’s in love. Michelle, his house-mate and former next door neighbor is everything he could want in a woman: she’s intelligent, easy on the eyes, an excellent zombie killer, and has large breasts. She even has a sense of humor. But falling in love with her is an event he never factored into his carefully constructed plans. Fighting off deadly intruders and hiding from blood-thirsty zombies is child’s play compared to the ordeal of facing their own inner demons as together they begin life anew after The Collapse of humanity. Join Kevin and Michelle in this frightening, sweet, erotic tale of love, romance and survival following the zombie apocalypse.

My Zombie Honeymoon sounded like a combination of I Love Lucy and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. But this is a thoroughly modern tale about the complexities of individuals in love in extraordinary circumstances. The main characters emerge from this catastrophic tale as very real people whose personal ghosts and demons are sometimes as frightening as the zombies. They are both, in their own way, strong, fragile, lost, solid, comical, and resilient. And amid the zombie gore, they manage to love, laugh, and survive. The author does a wonderful job of combining the harsh realities of an apocalypse with the tenderness and humor of a love story. This is a great read.

I was very surprised at how much more than the typical zombie story line this book entailed. The characters were very well developed and I found myself empathizing with them as they struggled to survive in an ever-changing world. The scene descriptions were so eloquent that it was easy to picture the story in my mind. The pace was quite fast so I never got bored with the story line. It was easy to read with a good flow. I never felt like anything was unbelievable or inserted just as filler. Everything and everyone had a purpose in this book and story. Despite the desperate situation the main characters were in, I found myself being hopeful that they would somehow survive. The book ended on an interesting cliff-hanger so I am looking forward to the next installment of this series so I can order my copy. Kudos to Mr. Evans for a very entertaining book!

I love zombie books and romance novels, as well. This book puts those two together seemlessly. The zombie scenes are amazing and incorporate aspects I've often wondered about. Such as, how does a temperature and weather affect them. On the flip side, the zombies didn't take away from the love. If anything, it made the love between the characters stronger. I think my favorite thing about the book is how very normal the couple is. Sure, they're surrounded by zombies trying to survive, but they still struggle with normal day to day feelings of inadequacy and jealousy. This is a really good book and has officially become a new favorite for me. I'm anxiously waiting for the sequel already.
