Isabel I (Spanish Edition), by Margaret George

About the Author Margaret George is the author of "The Autobiography of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles, The Memoirs of Cleopatra", and "Elizabeth I", among other novels. Margaret first got the idea to write historical fiction when, after reading numerous books that viewed Henry VIII through the eyes of his enemies and victims, she found herself wondering if there might be another side to the story. She became determined to let Henry speak for himself, and it took fifteen years, about three hundred books of background reading, three visits to England to see every extant building associated with Henry, and five handwritten drafts for her to answer the question: What was Henry really like? Margaret was born in Nashville, Tennessee, and has traveled extensively. She and her husband live in Madison, Wisconsin.

New edition, with special thanks to our new editor, Joanne Girard. Jane Austen tells us that Mr. Collins was originally a man of 'great humility of manner,' but suppose that wasn't true. What if Mr. Collins was a very different person than he appeared to be? His false portrayal of himself is all part of "Mr. Collins' Deception." This short story is also included in the compilation “Pride and Prejudice Villains: Revisited – Redeemed – Reimagined, A Collection of Six Short Stories” This short story is about 16,000 words.

Since I read virtually every variation, sequel, spin-off, novella and short story in the "Pride and Prejudice" JAFF world, I downloaded this when I stumbled across it without really knowing what to expect. I'm glad, because I've never cared much for Mr. Collins and might have passed this one up if I'd known the entire story is told from his point of view, and I'd have missed this creative spin on his character. It turns out that he's a total phony! The writing itself is quite good and kept my interest throughout, though it isn't a very long read. Loved the scene where he finally reveals his true personality, much to Lady Catherine's horror. Lucky Charlotte to find herself married to this guy!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Fun By Kindle Customer This is such a fun and entertaining twist on one do P&Ps supporting characters. I love it. I don't know if I will ever be able to view Mr. Collins in quite the same way again.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Mr. Collins has a secret By Ldub This is a wonderful, short, P&P What If. In this case what if Mr. Collins was actually a clever man who was outsmarting Lady Catherine. In this P&P Alternate universe two of Mr. Collins' friends have tried to be Lady Catherine's parson only to lose the position due to lack of obeisance from either themselves or their wives. So a healthy, sane and normal man transforms into a bulbous, toady to woo a permanent position.Told from his perspective this covers his first year at Rosings and includes most of the scenes with Mr. Collins you love to hate in Pride and Prejudice with a new twist.

Beautiful Story Explaining Life's Big Questions to Children By Pearl Hou I love how the author tells the story from a bird's perspective - such a sweet way to explain questions such as lifecycle, nature, and growth to children. Also learned that the author is a lawyer and put so much work into this little book for children. You can feel the thoughtfulness and a loving heart when you flip through the pages.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. " A pandemic/epidemic outbreak story that is very original and well written" By rose My 5 star review of “Towards the Brink” written by Craig McDonough I’d like to start by saying this book was a beta edition and the first book I’ve read by this author. The storyline was very interesting and seemed to flow naturally. The character depth was very well done and I found my interest in the main characters too grow deeper as the story progressed. The afflicted were very different in appearance and demeanor and not really like most zombies portrayed that I’m used to reading about. The delivery system used to spread the sickness and how the afflicted in turn spread the virus was just brilliant. Evil characters that came up with the infection were just diabolical and I found myself being genuinely unnerved time and again. This story seemed like a terrorist plot that was carried out against our country through our food distribution system, while at the same time I felt like the author focused on the city he centered on. So this was a book about a terroristic plot, a worldwide attack and most of all horror. I recommend this story to anyone into apocalypse/ pandemic worldwide collapse. Buy this book and be prepared to be fearful about eating certain vegetables.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Great Read Cover to Cover By C.M. Rutherford This story is even scarier because of the way this apocalypse starts. So many additives and hormones are added to the food we consume every day this really makes you think about that while reading. The author brings a great group of characters to life in this book. I like the fast pace action and well told story. I highly recommend this book for any ZomPoc fans. Craig McDonough knows how to keep the story moving. This book is one that pulls you in and before you know it you are nearing the end of the book. I look forward to reading the rest of the story.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. It confirmed that the s*** had hit more than just the fan!! By deez Toward the BrinkCraig McDonoughFascinating story line. This is an adventure that everyone can relate to. The ground zero event is awesome. You are thrown into the lives of simple people that are only trying to survive and find that their world is catapulted into chaos and mayhem. There is nothing about this that you will not like. I was hooked from the beginning and it only gets better. I booked marked more than a few pages so I could go back and read again. The cherry on top is a conspiracy. Can’t get any better than that!!!One of my favorite reads.

Sly Mongoose, by Tobias S. Buckell

From Publishers Weekly Buckell returns to the universe of Crystal Rain (2006) and Ragamuffin (2007) for another action-packed story of human colonists fighting to survive on an alien world with all the odds against them. The story bounces between two protagonists: teenage Timas, one of the few inhabitants of the floating spherical city of Yatapek who can maintain the enormous mining machine that harvests ore from the furnace-hot surface of Venus-like Chilo, and Pepper, aka Juan Smith, an elite Ragamuffin soldier from New Anegada who'd prefer to forget about his violent past. As the only survivor of a ship infected with a virus that turns people into murderous zombie slaves of the alien Swarm, the last thing Pepper wants is another fight, but with the Swarm making inroads on Chilo, he has little choice. Buckell delivers double helpings of action and violence in a plot-driven story worthy of a Hollywood blockbuster. (Aug.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist Chilo is a world of high pressure, intense heat, and acidic rain, in which domed cities float above the clouds, where the pressure and temperature are survivable. Timas, 14, supports his family by going down to the surface in one of the few remaining groundsuits to repair the mining head vital to the city’s survival. When Timas’ city is damaged by a messenger crashing into it, everything he knew is turned upside down. The crasher, Pepper, who survives, alerts Chilo to approaching zombie invaders. Then the high-tech Aeolians send Katerina to demand that Pepper be turned over to them for trial on charges of destroying a starship. But something is hidden on Chilo’s surface that is worth starting a war for. Timas, Katerina, and Pepper must lead the struggle to survive the invasion, and in the process all undergo unexpected changes and learn the true extent of their capabilities. Buckell’s world building, full of strong Aztec and Caribbean elements, is spectacular; the story, finely tuned and engrossing. --Regina Schroeder

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Buckell still rules! By H. Grove (errantdreams) Sly Mongoose is set several generations after Ragamuffin, and our old friend Pepper is back in the middle of the latest crisis. As always the alien machinery inside of him has caused him to outlast and outlive everyone around him, so he's the only character you'll remember from previous books. The descendants of the Azteca fled New Anegada and their alien masters, and now live in floating cities set about a deadly planet called Chilo. One of the things I love about Buckell's work is that his books in this series have enough similarity of style, exploration, themes, etc. (not to mention the fantastic character of Pepper!) to satisfy someone who's looking for more of 'the same'. However, each one is also quite different from the previous books, so you certainly won't feel bored with the material! Each book takes place some time after the previous one, in this case several generations later. Each book explores a different part of the universe, although at the same time it takes on the consequences of previous plots. So there's a ton of new material while also a few familiar threads to hold onto. This also means that the books can stand alone, although you'll have an easier time following some things if you know what came before. The characters are complex and interesting. As usual it could be argued that Pepper is actually not the main character, although perhaps he is more so in Sly Mongoose than in the last two books. This is a great approach, because Pepper's certainly not your standard hero, nor even your standard anti-hero, and it's often both useful and important to see events through other people's eyes as well.In many ways Buckell's books hearken back to an earlier style of hard SF that drops you straight into highly alien situations and lets you absorb it all, rather than starting from something familiar. They also contain a strong element of exploration with regard to alien sentience, societal and governmental structures, and so on. Most refreshingly, he explores all sorts of positive and negative aspects of these things without holding up a sharp agenda. It's writing that makes you think, not writing that preaches. He also writes with an incredibly unique flavor that I've not seen in any other author's books, so if you're looking for something new, his books are a great bet!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Zombies, Politics and Cities in then Clouds By Amazon Customer An intense debate over how to deal with illegal aliens... a virus corrupting the results of electronic voting... a runaway greenhouse effect... This would sound like something out of current headlines, if not for the zombies. Everything is better with zombies.Buckell returns to the universe of his previous 2 novels and humanity is still misplacing it's resentment toward its (now former) alien overlords by finding new and exciting ways of killing each other. The setting is what initially sets this book apart from your average adventure filled science fiction yarn. The caustic Venus like atmosphere of Chilo offers us a dizzying array of floating cities, air ships, clockwork dragons, but the people that choose to live on Chilo give the story its soul.If you've read the Crystal rain, you'll recognize the Azteca. If you've read Ragamuffin you'll recognize the Consensus as an extrapolation of democracy enabled by the Lamina technology. If you've read either, you'll love seeing Pepper in action. If this is the first book you read by Buckell, it'll definitely entice you to read the previous books.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. It's not great, but it stays with you By Rubik The reason this book is still on my mind is that it shows the pros and cons of the opposites of democratic choice. On the one hand are the Aeolians who vote on absolutely everything, all the time. On the other are the Yatapekians who use a more traditional patriachal structure to get things done. But when an imminent threat arrives both people drag their feet trying to figure out what to do about it. That part of the plot struck me as insightful. Even in the face of clear and present danger some people dither around. So the plot was good but the book is full of cliches, as others have pointed out. I leave you with two things: the main bad-ass character actually acts like a bad-ass and often sacrifices others, or others' opinions of him, to get to a positive solution for the whole. To the point of quickly killing someone when he could have probably just restrained them during a fight. He's totally a take-no-prisoners kind of guy. If there is no point in keeping a threat alive, he doesn't. On the downside, when the ragamuffin-types talk using pidgin (broken English) it's annoying. I know the author is from the Caribbean but it's annoying down there too. And it seems like the "talk" slipped a few times into the editing of the regular paragraph descriptions. And THAT is one of my biggest pet peeves: bad editing.Still, it's a fun, easy read. I probably would have loved it as a 13 or 14-year-old. Now as a 30 something, it's a decent way to pass a few nights instead of watching bad T.V.

The world is in turmoil as new money brings new power, and the old social order crumbles. And as mankind’s arts grow stronger, a terror from the ancient past awakens... This highly original fantasy depicts a unique world, where tired gods walk industrial streets and the tide’s rise and fall is extreme enough to swamp continents. Magic collides with science to create a rich backdrop for intrigue and adventure in the opening book of this epic saga.

The world building is staggering, both in a geographical sense and the author's unique treatment of tropes like undead and fairies. One of those slow burns that doesn't actually burn because you're imagination is so busy taking it all in. The characterizations are strong, many harboring both demons and interesting motivations. Prose is eloquent. The history is rich and mysterious, you can't wait to find out more. When magic or monsters or action sequences appear, they are quite impressive. We're talking China Mieville levels of innovation and vision in this one. I am totally smitten. Now comes the long wait for her second novel...

The author spends quite some time developing it so it seemed alive and I got lost in the book reading (one of those where you just have to stay up late to see what happens next). I enjoyed the character development, the strong female characters, and look forward to seeing the next edition, insofar as this definitely ended with a cliff hangar.

McKinley starts an epic tale set on an ancient world, Ruthnia, that has seen numerous civilizations rise and fall. It is a world of two moons, of the Tyn, enslaved magical beings; and of steam power generated from magical sands. It is a world where horses are extinct and dogs, some of whom speak, have replaced them It is also a world where ghosts walk unless released by Guiders. Most of the Gods were killed two centuries before leaving only the God of Drink. A lot of technology has been rediscovered from ancient cities, and the discovery of an untouched city in the far, frozen South sets off a race among the hundred kingdoms. We follow six Kressind siblings. One designed The Iron Ship (paper from Rebellion), one is a playwright who suppresses his magical powers after he blinded one eye of his brother who has become a Guider. One bought rank in the army and because he slept with someone’s wife, finds himself exiled to the Gates of the world. And one takes over her husband’s factory, not approved for women in this Victorian age, and routs out corruption. This first part of the tale follows the construction of the first ship made of iron despite efforts to stop it. This is a marvelous and complicated world and I hope the sequels follow soon.Review printed by Philadelphia Weekly Press

Gai-Jin: The Epic Novel of the Birth of Modern Japan (Asian Saga, Book 3), by James Clavell

From Publishers Weekly The second volume in Clavell's Shogun quartet was a 13-week PW bestseller. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Back to feudal Japan, which now enters the modern world, from the master of the three-decker behemoth (Shogun, Tai-pan, Noble House, etc.). Once you're into it, you forgive Clavell his galloping grammar and anachronisms and are swept along by spirited storytelling. Although Clavell clearly takes this hackwork as weighty and worthy entertainment, the heart quails at a serious weighing of a novel peopled with larger-than-life comic-strip characters caught up in clich‚s of Japanese exotica and international business deals as well as of internecine warfare--all of which Clavell writes at full throttle as if infused by the soul of Alexandre Dumas. A sequel to Tai-pan (1966), this is the sixth novel in Clavell's Asian saga and takes place in 1862. The gai-jin (foreigners) have arrived, intent on doing business with the Japanese. With laws against the use of the wheel in carriages or carts, the Japanese, their tradition- bound Emperor and competing warlords detest the foreigners, who have ruined the Chinese with the Opium Wars. The mighty Struan shipping empire, Noble House, has built a base in Yokohama, but with the illness (fatal) of Culum Struan, tai-pan (head) of the business empire, 20-year-old Malcolm Struan stands ready to become tai-pan. In the first chapter, however, he's attacked by samurai assassins on the Tokaido road and lies either bedridden or hobbles about for the rest of the novel. Young Angelique Richaud, 18, Parisienne daughter of a gambler who has lost what money the family had, sets her eye on Malcolm. Angelique is raped by a rogue samurai and now secretly carries his child, unbeknownst to the love- besotted Malcolm. Angelique's syphilis-stricken fellow Frenchman Andre Poncin wends his way through the plot toward a glorious love- death with his Japanese mistress while Japanese warlords fight each other, samurai endlessly behead samurai, earthquakes shiver, and Yokohama burns. You get your money's worth if you want to spend it here. (Literary Guild Dual Selection for Summer) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Review “With great skill and intelligence…Gai-Jin is just the ticket. It has it all: murders, battles, rapes, earthquakes, sword fights, insanely convoluted political intrigues, and innumerable accounts of ‘pillowing’ with beautiful women.”—San Francisco Chronicle“A grand historical perspective that makes us feel we’re understanding how today’s Japan came into being…absorbing…full of rich characters and complicated action.” —New York Times“Engrossing…entertaining…the broad portrait is accurate and as colorful as an ancient Kabuki play.”—People "Breathtaking....worth every word, every ounce, every penny."—Associated Press From the Trade Paperback edition.

Especially if you like fiction about Asia. Not only did he tell great stories but his books were filled with so much good history and culture about places like China and Japan. Though I was never a fan of "King Rat" books like Shogun, Tai-Pan, and Noble House were some of the best I ever read. They were books you never wanted to end.Gai-Jin starts off that way as well. The first 400 or 500 pages of Gai-Jin are classic Clavell. Combining many of the stories and characters from Shogun, Tai Pan, and Noble House. The books first 500 pages are terrific. Clavell using some familiar faces from his other books sets the stage for the Meiji Restoration in Japan. The book in typical Clavell fashion talks about the history of Japan after the arrival of Commodore Perry in 1853 as well as of China while it was divided up into spheres of influence.Gai-Jin is so good at setting the stage for Meiji with its characters discussing Japan's options of either learning for the Gai-Jin or attempting a futile resistance and facing humilation like China suffered under the Opium Wars.Unfortunately Clavell died shortly after finishing this book. And unfortunately the affects of his illness affect the second half of the book. The book just loses focus 1/2 way through. My gut feeling is that Clavell's illness just caught up to him. Because the book just goes downhill and nowhere which is not typical of Clavell.Clavell will never be replaced. Other fictional books about Asia do not even compare. Cloud of Sparrows, The Laura Joh Rowland Books, are ok but not in Clavell's league. The first half of Gai-Jin reminds us how good he was. Unfortunately, he will never be replaced.

The heir to the Noble House trading company, established in Tai-pan, travels to Japan to expand the fortunes of his great company. However, the new heir is not a strong as the great Dirk Struan and the rivals of the Noble House conspire to destroy it. All this treachery is set against a backdrop of terrorism and diplomatic intrigue as the warlords of Japan conspire to take advantage of the presences of the "gai jin".This book has the murders, battles, rapes, natural disasters and convoluted politics that are the hallmarks of Clavell's writing. However, just like the Noble House heir, the book starts off wounded and never really recovers. Unlike many of Clavell's other books, there is no strong lead character to really carry the story, and as a result, it does not move as smoothly or as interesting as his previous books, Shogun and Tai-pan.Unfortunately James Clavell has set the bar a little too high with his previous novels and this one isn't quite as good. Still, if you are a fan, it is worth reading. If you have never read a Clavell novel, pick up one of the others first and you will appreciate his writing more.

By trashcanman Just finished this book yesterday.I was positively hooked on it once I opened it. A friend recommended this one to me since I'm a big admirer of Japanese culture. This book has so many complicated stories going on it can be rough to keep up with them all at once, especially when they all weave together, but you still care for each of the characters. The story allows you to see all sides of every conflict, there is no black or white, it's all grey. You root for almost every character, even though they are all conflicting with each other. For example, the Shogunate rule the country with military might while the revolutionary shishi samurai, driven to poverty by the shogunate's excesses, are organising a coup to restore power to the emperor. The man passed over as shogun, Lord Yoshi, is strong and admirable and beset by enemies on all sides; a target of shishi assassinations and power grabs from within his own shogunate. Meanwhile, he must deal with the gai-jin (foreigners) who have been allowed to settle in Yokohama and are hated by shishi and shogunate alike. But the British navy threatens to crush Yedo (Tokyo) and take Japan by force if not allowed to conduct their trade. As the Japanese have no guns or cannons, they must comply...for now. Hiraga (who uses several names over the course of the book to hide his identity) is a shishi who wishes to exterminate all gai-jin and the shogunate as well. Sounds like an evil character, but you come to understand his point of view and even root for the guy as he crawls through the snakes' nest that is the politics of 19th century Japan. Like I said, a lot of grey area, when the shishi attempt to assassinate Yoshi you don't know who to root for. That kind of stuff makes this book so engaging. The Gai-jin themselves are the focal point of much of the book with Dirk Struan's son, Malcolm, falling in love with a beautiful frenchwoman against his mother's wishes and that conflict threatens to dominate the entire book. Dozens of characters and sub-plots to keep track of, I couldn't wait to see how this all ended. Sadly, the result is not pretty. A truly shocking event happens which throws a wrench into the last part of the book and taints the rest of the story with melancholy as the brilliant political machinations, schemes, and conflicts that made the book so exciting in the first place practically vanish unfulfilled as the aftermath of the tragedy takes over. Worst ending ever. Or should I say worst lack of an ending ever? The epilogue is pointless and solves nothing. So much is unnecessarily built up at the end and then just left there to drive you insane long after the pages have ended. Well there it is; read it and love it, but just don't expect anything to be resolved. Just be happy that life goes on for these characters, even if you don't get to read about it.
