Two very different families are bonded by scandal in this sweeping story of love, greed, and betrayal Anselme Rochefort has built an empire manufacturing serge de Nîmes, or denim. His biggest client? Levi Strauss. As the craze for blue jeans begins to sweep the globe, Rochefort Industries seems poised for untold success. But Anselme can be as cruel and ruthless with his family as he is in business. The Rocheforts’ neighbor Donatien Rouvière has one of the region’s most prosperous farms and is desperate for a son to carry on his legacy. After the births of three daughters, the Rouvières adopt an orphan from the Sisters of Charity convent and raise him as their own. When Anselme suggests uniting the two families by arranging for their children to marry, it seems like the perfect match. But as the lives of the two clans grow increasingly intertwined, dark secrets come to light, including the mysterious circumstances of the death of Anselme’s eldest daughter. With The Rocheforts, Christian Laborie weaves a captivating tale of deceit, intrigue, and the dynamic tension between industrialization and a way of life rooted in the land.

Those long, involved novels which follow a family from generation to generation? The ones where the sins of the father were visited on the sons, and their sons, etc? The late author Taylor Caldwell used to churn them out and all were entertaining in their overwrought way. (Side bar: I wish Caldwell's publishers would publish her "Dynasty of Death" trilogy in ebook...).Anyway, French author Christian Laborie's novel, "The Rocheforts", is being published in English. It was a best-seller in France in 2010. The book, a longish saga of the Rochefort family of the Languedoc-Roussillon region in southern France, begins when a man is spotted entering a darkened house in 1898 and seen leaving with a bundle of...something. The reader doesn't know what the bundle is but the author gives clues. And we do find out later on. The story then moves on in time to the merging of two family fortunes - fortunes of unequal size, however - with the marriage of Louise Rouviere and Jean-Christophe Rochefort. Louise is from a prosperous farm family, which, unfortunately for the father, Donatien, consists only of daughters. He and his wife decide to adopt a child from an orphanage in Nimes and groom him to take over the family farm. The rest of the book is the story of the Rochefort and the Rouviere families and how the two interact, interlove, and intermarry. The villain of the book - and there really only is one - is the patriarch of the Rocheforts, Anselme, who time and time again manages to alienate everyone around him. (I say only one, though there's another bad guy, but he's sort of an "Anseleme mini-me") From Anselme the lies and coverups do go generation to generation...The attentive reader of fiction almost always learns something from the pages of a well-written novel. In "The Rocheforts", we learn about denim. The material, denim. The name "denim" was taken from the area in France in which it was developed, "Nimes". ("de Nimes" or "denim"). The Rochefort money has come from both dowries and the production of fabric.Christian Laborie also does an excellent job at writing about France in the pre-WW1 years til the 1930's in his family saga. This is one of the first novels I've read that covers those years, in political, economic, and societal terms. The only problem with the book that some readers may find is the somewhat flatness of the writing. I'm trying to figure out if its because of the translation from French to English. I don't know who did the translation; no name is given. It could be that Christian Laborie did his own translation. Now, I liked it because I don't like florid writing. But others may not be able to get "involved" with the family. This is one of those book I can heartily recommend to readers looking for a robust family saga. But do read all the reviews that will be written about this book - I think mine is the first but many others will follow - and see if any mention the writing style.

A Good Story that Epitomizes Life Among the Rich & Powerful of Europe Between the Two Wars By Bill Anderson Length: 475 pages. This is a good adventure with intrigue. Set in France at a time when Europe was at the peak of power, culture and refinement. If this story was written during the 1970s in the United States, it would be about Jock Ewing. If it were written about Silicon Valley, it would be about Steve Jobs trying to get an adopted son married to the granddaughter of Walt Disney.Yet, in many ways, it is a greater escape by being seton France a hundred years ago, so the reader can more easily suspend disbelief.I got this through the Amazon Vine program, thinking it might be as intriguing and tragic similar to another novel based on characters not unlike Ted Turner and Rupert Murdoch. (I apologize for not recollecting the name of the book, but I couldn't even google for it successfully.)The Rocheforts is a well-written book, but not quite a five star. It tugged me from time to time, but, alas, I found myself reading a few pages, then picking up something else. Then, I'd find myself coming right back to The Rocheforts. But, I just don't get invested into the characters.A 4-1/2 Star Novel.

Perhaps they've gone out of vogue, but I kind of miss them. The Rocheforts is one of those huge, sweeping sagas like the kind that used to be really popular back in the 80s. It follows two French families (the novel is translated from the French...it was a huge bestseller over in France a few years back. Maybe we have to move to France to get these kind of novels back?), the wealthy and privileged Rocheforts and the more down to earth farming family, the Rouvieres. Needless to say, the families become intertwined via marriage, children, relationships, scandal, hatreds, all that good stuff that makes a family saga novel so danged gossipy and good. It starts towards the end of the 1800s and finishes off a hundred or so years later so we've got some good generational stuff going on here too.If you miss the whole saga type books, order this. It's just good fun.

Short listed for the 2016 Historical Novel Society Indie award. For many years, the old tree stood alone as history unfolded around it. It watched and waited, guarding its secrets well. Today, the heat enveloped it in a shimmering haze. Although there was no breeze, the leaves began to tremble. A low hum seemed to come from deep within. As Marion stumbled towards it that sultry spring day, how could she have known she was the one it was waiting for? How could she have guessed it would draw her into the very fabric of time? How could she have imagined the danger she would face? For the tree was the gateway between two worlds.

A well-deserved HNS Indie Review Editor's Choice By Helen Hollick I loved this story: it has clever dialogue, the history is brought to life and the timeslip element is exciting, intriguing and perhaps even more important - very believable. (Although maybe there are a couple of quibbles about plausibility....but these sort of quibbles could be applied to any timeslip-type novel and this is fiction - good fiction at that!)My only regret is that the story wasn't longer - when something is written as well as this you really don't want the end to come too soon!As Managing Editor of the Historical Novel Society Indie Reviews I was delighted that Out Of Time received the well deserved accolade of Editor's Choice and is therefore automatically longlisted for the HNS Indie Award 2016.

By Jjspina Out of Time was an enjoyable romp through time that took place in 2006 and jumped back to the 12th Century during the time of King Richard, the Lionheart. The author has created a story of a woman, Marion, one day while visiting an abbey is drawn to a beech tree and suddenly is pulled through the tree, a porthole, into another time in the past at this same abbey. This was a cleverly created story connecting the two times and keeping each separate but yet together. Her characters were fascinating from the Abbess Hildegarde to Giles De Soutenay who becomes Marion's connection between their times. There is more to their connection than meets the eye. This was a thoroughly enjoyable and easy read. I would highly recommend it.

I have read all the Outlander books and loved them but there was a lot of 'stuff ' that could have been left out. This is straight forward and entertaining. Although I would have liked to have read how the Abbess enjoyed her tea after 30 years!

This is just a nice story about a lighthouse keeper who raised his child & a child that almost drowned as his own, then the hardships the 3 went through when a ship wrecked & they had to take on 80 more people (only ones left after wreck) & feed them on nearly nothing. Then the background comes in about why certain things happened. I knew about 1/2 way through basically what would happen. But it's a clean book, no sex & where there was swearing the word wasn't spelled out...so that was OK.

The characters are well drawn By Patrick Cabe Consistent with the style of the period in which it was written, this is a great read. The characters are well drawn, believable (well...to a reasonable), and the scenarios are engaging. I quite liked the book and already set off in pursuit of more of Louis Tracy's work. Loved the language.

I related to the main character immensely and the descriptions of his journey created movies in my mind. I was drawn in by the author's profound comments on humanity with contrasting views from multiple characters. Realizing this is the author's first novel makes the insight and talent he writes with even more impressive. While very different from what I normally read, I recommend this book to everyone and am looking forward to more from Chad Ganske. I still find myself thinking about Stanford and really hope there is a sequel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Read this book By Susanne Douma This novel left me wanting more. Even in its darkness it was a welcome break from the tedium of everyday life. The character of Stanford Samuels is one that everyone can relate to; his struggle to fit in to the perfect society all the while being excluded because of his unique attribute is one that is familiar to everyone's heart. Chad Ganske's debut novel is brilliant in its complexity. He will haunt you with his vision, and if you're like me you will have a hard time waiting for his next installment.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I love Ganske's writing By Louann Carroll Chad Gansky has hit a home run with Idyllic Avenue. I downloaded Kindle for Android and took Idyllic Avenue with me everywhere I went. From Home Depot to Target to JC Penny, I couldn't put my phone down. My husband got a little cranky because he did all the driving. On a more serious note, I love Ganske's writing. He is a young man with a lot of talent and I expect great things from him in the future. His writing style is fluid, the characters are fascinating, and he weaves a tale of sci-fi any hard core science fiction fan is going to love. The imagery Ganske uses draws you in and won't let go. You can see his imagination fired this novel and he peoples his world with souls undergoing the search for life and for an idyllic world. It is the cost for that state of perfectionism that makes his novel so compelling. It is a peek into human nature, love, and loss with opinions and ideas that differ from one person to the other keeping you riveted throughout the entire novel.Ganske should be proud of Idyllic Avenue. This novel comes highly recommended and I am sure (I hope) another is just around the corner.

Excerpt from Self-Culture Through the VocationThere Is to-day a nation-wide awakening to the need of vocational education. We have come to see that if education is to equip adequately for happy and helpful life, it must prepare every individual to take hold somewhere, in work that is worth while, and make an effective contribution. There is no more pathetic spectacle than the cultivated ne'er-do-well - the man of fine appreciation and liberalized spirit, who is unable to do any one thing effectively; and so drifts through life, his refined sensibilities perpetually tortured by economic failure. Education fails if it does not do everything possible to avoid such tragedy.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
