September 1942. The few men from the Sturmpionierbataillon to have survived the North African campaign have now been sent to the eastern front. Throughout the crucial fight for Stalingrad, a battle which claimed two million victims, human tolerance is tested beyond all limits. There is trench warfare, hand-to-hand combat for every single building, hunger and cold. Madness becomes the last place of refuge before death… In these conditions, young Leutnant von Wetzland is forced to accept he cannot possibly keep up even the most basic of moral standards. And that applies to himself, as well as his men. This book is based on extensive research, including numerous interviews with contemporary witnesses. But this is fiction rather than non-fiction. The author chose to keep close to the fiction, even when the two competed for priority, so that he could get inside the main characters’ minds – and look with them into the depths of the abyss. It’s this that gives the book its exceptional quality amongst the many other publications on Stalingrad, and sets it alight as a heartfelt, fiery protest against all war. Christoph Fromm was born in 1958 in Stüttgart and has been a screenwriter since 1983. He came to fame with his work for the cinema, ‘Treffer’, ‘Spieler’, and ‘Die Katze’, and was rewarded with an Emmy and the Grimme Prize for his outstanding three-part docudrama, ‘Die Wölfe’. Since 2002 he has been Head of Screenwriting at the Filmakademie in Baden-Württemburg. In January 2006, he and Tina Liszius jointly founded Primero Verlag publishing house in Munich. His novel ‘Die Macht des Geldes’ was published by Primero, as are both the German and the English versions of the Stalingrad story.

Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, the IS terror. Those pictures stay on the surface of the mind, they seem somewhat unreal, as if they could not, should not ever be concerning one personally. Because of this I thought that a book about Stalingrad would be even harder to grasp. But it wasn’t like that. I was sucked right into the world of Lieutenant von Wetzland’s and his unfathomable subordinate Gross’s thoughts. I was able to follow the transformation of a war romantic to a war defector in detail. Why someone who hates war, can not rid himself from it, like an addict can not rid himself from his drug. The death toll – in Stalingrad alone there were about two million victims – is monstrous, compared to contemporary casualties. The suffering of the wounded too. Out of these reasons one would have enough pretext to repress those pictures like a nightmare, but this book forced me to accept them as real. Not only because it is blatantly based on eye witness accounts, but also because it does not leave anything out, sugarcoats nothing. And I realized one thing: No matter how modern the devices of war may become, the destruction caused in our minds will always be the same.

His length stands for a seemingly endless death struggle that lieutenant Hans von Wetzland and his companions undergo while fighting, wandering and questioning themselves in the no man's land at the east front. The simple division of morality into good and evil is being shaken up. Rather, through the fight between moral demands and basic human needs, soldiers become aware of the dissociation of their personalities. One part of them still believes in God and the hierarchical structures of the army. Whereas the other part tries to regain his self-determination through unmasking the forced believe in higher powers as a simple method of pushing forward the individual. The way the novel is written reveals the grotesque inversion of the war: In the description of humans and battlefields the thoughts become substantial and soldiers turn into machines while machine guns and tanks gain an independent existence.Stalingrad not only gets through a historic event in a fictitious story, but also finds a figurative language of his own to describe the inner conditions of the soldiers being put in a landscape of destruction.

Merciless study of the abyss inside the human mind By Amazon Customer This novel really swept me off my feet and it took a long time till I felt back on safe ground. While being always accurate in its historical details, it tells the story of lieutenant von Wetzland and his front-line unit on the battlefield of Stalingrad. Especially its clear and vivid account makes you never forget the almost unbearable images of this cruel war. Nowadays, you can hardly imagine the horrible events during the siege of Stalingrad. But this novel introduces you to various characters and their thoughts, so that you can at least gain an impression. This is why I believe the novel to be very authentic and instructive. I really want to recommend it to everybody who is interested in historical events and the dark abyss inside our minds.

Purrier Each year we purchase a couple of these books (because restaurant menu items change and updates are made yearly) to help us calculate carbohydrates for my Type I diabetic daughter. Calorie King books are small enough to fit in a purse or the glove box of the car and are very comprehensive, with both restaurant and everyday items. This book is very easy to use and my 9 year old daughter has been able to find the information she needs for a couple of years now. This book is very affordable and a tool that I would recommend to anyone who needs to keep track of carbohydrates. Very user friendly and a well worth it's weight in gold.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Vicarish By Daniel Myers This book is a curiosity about a curiosity: Robert Stephen Hawker, Vicar of Morwenstow (on the Cornish coast) and lifelong eccentric. Sabine Baring-Gould, the author, was almost no less an eccentric. But that's by the by. The book is written in a style I should call 19th Century "Vicarish" - to coin a term - with a knowledge of Ancient Greek coming in rather handy I should say.The book, as the author admits at one point, mainly consists of "gossip," that is, anecdotes that may be true only in part, if at all. But still, for those who fancy such things, it is engaging all the same. Here, for the prospective reader to savour, is a typical anecdote of Vicar Hawker's eccentricity:"He was usually followed to church by nine or ten cats, which entered the chancel with him, and careered about it during service. Whilst saying prayers Mr. Hawker would pat his cats, or scratch them under their chins. Originally ten cats accompanied him to church; but one, having caught, killed, and eaten a mouse on a Sunday, was excommunicated, and from that day was not allowed again into the sanctuary."Nevertheless, for all his drollery, Stephen Hawker was essentially a lonely man whose parishioners were largely illiterate, oppressed peasants accustomed to eking out a living by "wrecking" or plundering from the ships that foundered on the rugged, stormy Cornish coast. As Baring-Gould puts it:"There was a sad undertone in Mr. Hawker's character. He felt his isolation in mind from all around him. His best companions were the waves and the clouds. He lived `the ever alone,' as he calls himself in one of his letters, solitary in the Morwenstow ark, with only the sound of waters about him. `The Lord shut him in.' "The fascination of the book for me was in its transporting the reader to another century and a somewhat alien mindset. If you like to read odd yet erudite tales of rum characters, then you could do far worse than this short, scrumptious biography.

Before reading this, I had tried dictation off and on for several years, stopping because it just wasn't smooth enough for me. Monica does a great job stating the case for why authors should reconsider dictation. She also walks you through her dictation setup and how to get started with Dragon, which is the only program authors should be using right now. After trying the book, I'm happy to say that I'm a dictation machine now, and this stuff really DOES work. But you've got to put the time and effort into learning it, just like you do with any skill like typing or Photoshop. It doesn't happen overnight. It feels awkward at first--almost like being handicapped. But if you go into it with a mindset that you're going to succeed, the methodologies will blow your current workflow out of the water. Guaranteed. My only minor issue with the book was that it glossed over dictation drills (as the author doesn't believe in them). I'm a very methodical, systems-oriented person, and if it weren't for the drills I found in another book, I might have abandoned dictation even after reading Monica's book because I couldn't wrap my head around "how" exactly to dictate properly and create a clean first draft. While the drills and exercises aren't for everyone, I can't stress the importance of dictation enough for people like me, and I think this book would have been an even better deal than it was if there was at least a little time devoted to helping ease newbies like me into the unfamiliar territory of dictation--just to seal the deal a bit more.Overall though, I'm immensely glad that I read this book and forever grateful to Monica for opening the door to dictation for me---it's going to take my writing career to new heights, I already know it!

I can type fairly fast, and I've never really experienced any pain in my hands/wrists. When I read Monica's book Write Better, Faster, I thought the part about dictating her book was interesting. Dictate Your Book gives you the necessary information (software, setups for desk and mobile, equipment, and exercises) for writing a book by dictation. I'd like to point out that anyone using OS X Yosemite should definitely try the dictation that comes with operating system. You don't even need to buy a fancy microphone - just use your iPhone headphones with mic (only works on certain macs - I have a mac mini). It's very accurate and seems to get better the more you use it without having to train it. I'm not faster with dictation yet because I'm just learning the correct way to speak and call for commands, but I think it will eventually become my preferred way to write beats and first drafts.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. 'Dictate Your Book' is the book for you By Jon If you are considering using dictation to write, 'Dictate Your Book' is the book for you. If you are new to using dictation (specifically Dragon) 'Dictate Your Book' is the book for you. If you gave up on dictation because you found it frustrating, 'Dictate Your Book' is the unequivocally the book for you. This is a very quick and easy book and has no fluff. It gives you what you need to know to make up your mind about dictation and start using it.When I first started using dictation, I picked up one of the few guides it cost 10X the price and has 1/10 the value. Dictate Your Book is, hands down, the best book I've encountered for someone just starting out with dictation or has tried it and been frustrated with the process. Are you still reading this? Cut it out and buy the book already! And, by the way, I am dictating this. Thanks, Monica!
