Marin is also great to follow on twitter. And he has a free monthly email with more animations. He obviously really cares about his work. I've been doing iOS work for years, but never did much with animation, and I have learned a lot.

Long The experience of reading “The Cold Forever” is like scanning a beautiful, elaborate tapestry from very close up. You can see individual threads and strands, but you never seem to get far enough back to see the way they all fit together. You keep getting lost, but then you get a clue that sets you on the track again. For a moment. It is this quest for meaning that provides the through-line of the reader’s interest and involvement in the story. We are sure, quite often, that we are going to figure this out in the end. I don’t think it’s too much of a spoiler to reassure you that, for the most part, you will. (I somehow missed where King Geist came from, but it’s probably in there somewhere.)“The Cold Forever” is a Time Travel, hard Sci-Fi novel with a Dystopian element thrown in. The plotline is detailed, incredibly complex, yet well thought out. Put briefly (if such is possible) it is the story of an alien test pilot whose experimental interstellar ship maroons him on earth when it self-destructs, causing “time fluxes” which appear randomly and destroy whatever they touch. The story takes place in several different time lines: one is the dystopian earth created by the time fluxes. The other is in a far future world of frost and super-technology. The others are…well, it gets pretty complicated.The main attraction in the story comes through our empathy towards two characters who stay consistent throughout, to whom we cling in desperation when everything seems out of control. Other characters – all very human and individual – have their own subplots, which are intricately intertwined to create the fabric of the story.I have only two complaints about this book. The first one is that it’s just too complicated. There are too many characters and permutations of characters and too many timelines to keep them all straight. There are most definitely too many points of view, which seem to float around uncontrolled. When I reached the point near the end of the book where the timelines and characters all flowed together into a single story I felt palpable relief.A minor benefit of this is that we are kept so off-balance that no reader is ever going to pick holes in the plotline or the time-travel paradoxes, because nobody can understand it well enough.The second problem is the style of the fight scenes, which borrow far too much from the Transformer and Iron Man movies. Adolescent boys who play video games may enjoy the conceit that fully armoured beings with futuristic weapons would fight with their fists like cowboys in a Western, demolishing scenery in all directions. But that palls rather quickly. The art of writing a fight scene is in maintaining the emotional involvement of the reader. No amount of bashing and smashing can make up for that. However, the bashing and smashing is very impressive, I must admit.Taken as a whole, this novel is an impressive feat of literary organization. Recommended for fans of: time travel, hard sci-fi, Transformers movies.I was given a free electronic copy of the book in order to write this review.

I got stuck somewhere in the middle of the story and I did love a lot of things in the book. It’s clear that the author thought well of the characters and the plot, but I couldn’t connect. The plot is well detailed and the time travel was explained really good (the author did a wonderful job here).Characters:The characters were well thought off, but something was missing for me as I think this is where my connection to the overall story fell short.Writing:There were some grammar issues here and there, but this had no importance in my eyes and the overall writing style of the author was really good.Cover Art:For Science Fiction book, the cover is just not pretty nor it says anything about the books itself. (I would say that I did go to the author’s Goodreads and saw the new cover and it is just wonderful).Other StuffOpening Line: “Sofya stood on a small, snowy hill, her eyes glued to the stars above.”Final Thoughts: This was the weirdest thing that happen to me while reading a book. I loved a lot of things here, but somehow I just didn’t connect to the story. I really don’t know why and I still think that if you are a Science Fiction reader, you might enjoy this book. It took me a while because of its complexity but I thought was well put together. A bit hard to follow because you go from the Present to 2053 then to the Age of Frost. But through all three time periods there were time fluxes. I was happy to note that Dmitry tied everything together at the end and then I knew who everyone was.The story is about an alien test pilot who somehow ends up on Earth and somehow causes the time fluxes. He know he has to fix the problem and travels through three different time periods and encounters people that will help him achieve it.The writing contains vivid imagery and makes you feel you're with the characters. The characters themselves feel very real.I gave this book a 4 based on that it was a bit hard to follow with the three time periods and multiple characters (even though at the end, the author brings them all to the major four characters). This is one book that I would recommend to everyone that love sci-fi stories and I myself will read it again.I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

The writing was favorable and the plot was well constructed (if a bit predictable). Towards the last 10% of the book Richard started to figure life out, so there were some excellent quotes in that section. Overall, I'm happy I read it.

With a specific view that broadens to the present moment By Leona Stucky-Abbott In this supremely satisfying story Robert Mayer transports his readers into eighteenth century New York, a melting pot world where slavery and various forms of servitude thrived, along with an established community full of bustling commerce, nuanced relationships and customs slanted to embolden the privileged. Mayer's command of this culture and setting is readily apparent. His main characters move inexorably towards a little known historic tragedy that deserves the full weight of exploration and his compassionate portrayal of flesh and blood persons doing the best they can.Mayer vivifies his characters so completely that readers will find it hard to imagine the events could have happened any other way. As is the case with true art, his characters reveal themselves from the inside so that their various actions can be considered and evaluated from their own perspectives, locked into their own time and place.Yet this novel is profoundly prescient of current American culture with its video awareness of prejudices brutally enshrined in policing practices and legal codes. This story speaks to the present moment as much as it delivers the head of history on a silver platter. As is the case with many past and present communities, New York's jagged justice rips apart the heart of all who care.Typical of Mayer's seasoned writing, each word is necessary and each paragraph artfully moves the drama forward. I heartily recommend this book. The story tells itself and at the end you marvel at Mayer's masterful touch.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. 1741 : A Novel as History of Hope By Carol Cott Gross Robert Mayer's latest novel, 1741, based on little known actual events in New York City is engrossing fiction and a must read about the deep roots of racial prejudice, and hope for a post racial society.1741 is the year of the so called Negro Conspiracy when 34 New Yorkers: slaves, and white "sympathizers" were hung and burned on little evidence, for allegedly plotting to burn the colony and overthrow the government. Mayer has humanized the history, and imagined a beautiful love story, based on New York Burning, by Harvard historian Jill Lepore.Mayer creates three back stories, in Africa, Ireland and New Foundland. James, proud King, is threatened by slavers to surrender in Africa. When James refuses, his pregnant wife is murdered. The double death of mother and unborn baby sets the stage for the tribes' shackled march to the coast, and horrendous voyage to New York.The second "voice" is Mary, in Ireland who tells her story in diary form. At 14, she's sold by Belfrey Church orphanage into indentured servitude to a New York owner. Aboard the ship, hapless Mary who doesn't know about sex, or what indentured means, becomes pregnant.The third voice is Peggy, a vivacious red head, endlessly cleaning fish in New Foundland, yearning to join her lover in New York. When Peggy suspects she's being jilted, she scrapes together fare, and heads for NY to win him back. The three lives and loves merge in Manhattan, at Hughson Inn, a seedy rooming house, and pub for whores, thieves, slaves and servants.James' ironic slave name becomes Caesar, whose royal spirit is almost crushed. Peggy struggles too, forced into prostitution, servicing white and blacks, which is how she falls in love with Caesar. Mary, lonely, and needy, wants Peggy's attention, but the ho with the heart of gold, has no time to comply. The stepping stone to the gallows is the New Years bash at the inn, attended by Peggy, Caesar, Mary and a motley crew. The party takes place after a series of fires rumored to be set by slaves. At the party, there's drunken babble about a plot, which no one takes seriously. These empty threats become grist for the rumor mill, used by local "pols." to promote themselves. Mary is sought out as a witness, coerced to testify. She takes the bait, implicating Peggy and Caesar, and others.A fourth voice, is the famous journalist Peter Zenger, who reports on the shady questionable proceedings, and political motivations. I intend to read Jill Lepore's book to separate fact and fiction.1741 is compelling, uplifting, and a revelation. I know about "strange fruit" hung from Southern trees. I didn't know until 1741, that in my beloved New York, blacks and whites were hung as street theater, and as a warning not to challenge the status quo of slavery.Mayer softens the dark saga with enduring love, compassion, and a glimmer of racial healing. A brightly colored parrot seen only by Caesar, follows him from Africa to New York as witness and reminder of his true self. In the closing scene, the parrot appears to Jamie, Peggy and Caesar's orphaned toddler as a harbinger of hope. Jamie's adoptive parents hope to raise the toddler in multi-racial freedom. In 2015, we aren't there. Reading 1741 is a step towards the dream.

Riveting story of an unknown part of history By Dan Warner This is a well researched and beautifully written account of a terrible event in American history. We ignore such events at our peril; the parallels of then and now are appalling. Well written and important.
