The English is not yet available at amazon.comI wish that the publishers had not changed the Italian title "A senso del dolore" to the one used in the English language release "I Will Have Vengeance" for this book is more about sorrow than vengeance. I wish that the author had made more of a link between the verisimo operas being performed in the book (the almost over-done double bill of "Cav and Pag") and the verisimo lives in fascist Naples of 1931. Maybe the problem is that the ingredients of opera, Teatro San Carlo, Naples, fascist Italy of 1931 and a detective who "sees" the dead cooks up into just too grand a minestrone for this interesting detective story.Consequently, for me, much remains incomplete. For instance, the author explains that giving a foundling the last name of Esposito was a common Neapolitan practice but doesn't add that this last name derives from the ancient Greek practice of exposing unwanted infants to the elements.In short, after enjoying the novel thoroughly, I was thoroughly unsatisfied. (Three stars) Too short a book. (Five stars). Very few times in my reading life, have I wanted a book to be longer. This is one of those few times. (Average 4 stars)

Authentic By Montalbano Good to see more 'authentic' Italian crime fiction being translated into English at last - rather than the poor man's version: the foreign (ie English/American) writer capitalising on an exotic location, while adding 'local colour' in the form of recycled clichès about Italian bureaucracy or politics, for example. While that is a perfectly valid approach, I can't help but think it's another example of the triumph of 'packaging' over 'content' that has defined western culture in recent times ... anyway, enough pseudo philosophy and back to the book.Having a hard-nosed police commissioner who can literally 'see' the the final moments of victims' lives after the event would seem to place the series more in a fantasy/supernatural genre rather than in crime fiction, but somehow it's a device that seems to work - and quite powerfully at that. It also adds another 'emotional' dimension to the story in a genre that can often be too clinical or seen as just a problem-solving exercise. The only minor criticism would be that, for me, the novel's setting (ie the 1930s Mussolini era) was not a central part of the story, and therefore seemed superfluous. On the other hand, why should it? Maybe it's just due to my outsider's curiosity/ignorance and something Italians understand innately and don't need to make a big deal about. Whatever ... I suppose it does add to the mystique and somehow makes it even more 'foreign'.

It is amusing and a very good description of the Duce's epoch. Sometimes it sort of gets to socialist or paternalist but just a little. I intend reading more from this series

A very good read- part "novel," part "research" By A Customer I began college as intensely opposed to sororities and the idea of "buying" my friends. Then, in my sophomore year of college, I met some girls in a sorority on campus, became friends with them, and eventually joined the sorority- an NPC group at a large state university.It was one of the best decisions I ever made- I made great friends and developed so much as a person. I think many sorority girls would say the same thing. It was a great experience.Had I read this book as a collegian, or recent graduate, I probably would have reacted the same as many of the sorority women's postings- "that is NOT true," "that never happens," etc. However, being removed from the situation by about five years gives you a different perspective.I am not blind enough to sit here and say " I have NEVER seen any of these things Ms. Robbins talks about going on." That is simply not true. The alcohol, the parties, the date rape, the eating disorders- it's all there. Maybe it wasn't a part of my sorority, or yours, but it's been a part of someone's. Every chapter, on every campus, is different. One of my sorority's chapters at a major university was closed due to hazing. Yet, I was never once hazed in any way. It all depends where you are and the people who are there with you.I didn't read this book thinking that Ms. Robbins was exposing "sororities everywhere." But I do think she provides a good depiction of how MANY sorority chapters operate. I think she also remained very objective in her writing. And, just think back to junior high or high school- the same catty girls, pressure to conform, etc. It's not all that different. The problem is there isn't really any other group comparable to a sorority-where 100+ girls can live together, attend the same meetings, share a common ritual, etc. You are thrown together much like real-life sisters live.Yes, "pledge" is an outdated term. But not that outdated- only a few years. And many chapters still use it. Don't use things like this to try to prove the author didn't truly research. Alcohol has forever been banned in sorority houses- but it's always there. Paddles were banned- at least in my sorority- but people still buy them.I really believe there are chapters out there who do emphasize scholarship, service, sisterhood, and the like. Mine was one of them, at least when I was there. Equally, there are chapters that do not. Several years before I joined, my chapter was completely different. It all depends on who is there at that particular time.I hope that people won't use this book to determine whether or not to go Greek, but I would definitely recommend that everyone read it. If nothing else, it brings up things you will experience in college, whether in a sorority or not. It isn't fair to assume that these four girls' experience will be the same for you. It won't be. Yours may be better, it may be worse. I will recommend to my future daughters to rush and I would hope they had an experience like mine. However, if they ended up in a chapter that did not treat them with true sisterly values, I would also recommend that they leave.The bottom line is that the experience you have depends on the school, the chapter, and the girls who are there with you. There is no "blanket" way to describe the Greek experience.

By A Customer A sister of mine I hadn't spoken with in a while asked me to write a negative review for this book. So I read the book figuring, from all my sister's fussing, that it would be easy to pan. But there was a problem. The very sister who is angry about this book did many of the same things listed in the book -- hazing, drinking, partying a little too closely with a specific group of "hot" fraternity boys. I know, because I did it too. Look, not everything in this book jives with my college experience, but enough does. It's actually not a bad book, either.

GREAT book By kmadelyn90 As a former greek who's still a student at a Big Ten school, I can say honestly that I've experienced life both in and out of the Greek system, and this book hits the nail on the head. It's a fabulous exploration of many of the things that simultaneously titillated and bothered me about Greek life.I quit on good terms, for monetary reasons, rather than because I wanted to leave the house. However, now that I'm a "GDI," my perspective on being Greek has completely changed. Although I respect and like the girls in my former house, looking at the Greek system from the outside in makes it look pretty absurd. The people in Greek system will always vehemently deny that it is made up of anything but puppies and rainbows and philanthropic sunshine, but lots and lots of shady stuff goes on.Hence, I'm glad such a good author/journalist had the balls to write an entire book about this interesting duality. It's well-researched and well-presented, and gives a pretty even look at things. Frankly, I think she was almost too nice and too eager to not offend at parts. A lot of the time, she lets the actions of the women in the book speak for themselves. Although I'd have loved to see some analysis, her journalistic writing style gives the book a lot of credibility. She justs chronicles things and lets the reader draw his or her own conclusions.Whether you're Greek, a former Greek, or a GDI, definitely a fascinating read. Sorority girls: don't disregard it before you've read it. It's really not as bad as you think it is.

Ms. Miller has woven a story that will enthrall a wide variety of readers: action, suspense, romance, historical. I was impressed by her excellent character development. I look forward to the next book in this saga.

Both were hungry for control. In On the Edge of Sunrise, we read about two people caught in the crossfire of this power struggle.Arria is a young widow, who is forced into a marriage to Tribune Drusus, who she despises. She loves another, a forbidden love. Garic is a Frank Warrior, a Long Hair, who Arria falls in love with. She is requested by a Roman commander Aetius to deliver a message to Attila the Hun asking for his support. She is the daughter of a Roman senator and is very knowledgeable in politics but she becomes a hostage.The love they share is fraught with danger as there are many enemies of both the lovers. An Egyptian slave who is determined to see that Garic and Arria are killed, an ambitious Tribune who looks for power are among the enemies that Garic and Arria have. During this time when the Roman Empire is on the edge of collapse and Aetius's power grows Garic and Arria must do whatever it takes to protect their love and to see that they and their friends and family are safe from political intrigue and death.Years ago I was fascinated with stories of Rome during this timeframe, just the civilization and its culture that has a lot of influence in our own society today. This novel takes the reader into a time that was dangerous with political intrigue and danger from outside invaders such as Attila the Hun. The author's research brings to life a long distant time, the story is exciting from the beginning, on the battlefield where Arria finds her husband dying to the ending that could lead to another novel. At least, I hope so because it would be fun to see more of the characters and how their lives progressed.I really liked this novel and give it 5 stars!I received a copy of this book for review and for my honest thoughts.

Between the romance, adventure, and battle scenes it is hard to put down! I really appreciated how much depth she gave to characters and it made you want to learn more and more about them. The heroine is a strong female character that you'll be rooting for the entire book. And the villains in the book will make you mad! You'll be flipping pages to find out what happens to them in the end!I don't typically read historical romance novels, but I found this book to be extremely intriguing and I really enjoyed learning about the history. You can tell Cynthia did her research writing this book! The historical detail is incredible. And the romance in the book was the perfect amount! I look forward to next the books!

Strong characters, intriguing plot, adventure, excitement, tragedy and hope, with a perfect amount of gore. I have invested a huge part of myself in this story, and now that it's all over, I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.I've heard it said once or twice that vampires are finished. After the whole Twilight craze, classic vamp fans complained that vampires had been bastardized, while "Twi-hards" demanded more of the same, and a wave of similar books flooded the market. Rhiannon Frater reminded me that vampires are NOT, in fact, dead. (...well, technically, they are I guess... but not the genre. You know what I mean.) Vampires can still exist within the horror genre, and can even have elements of romance. Female characters can be strong and empowered, and be a role model for women everywhere.The ending was... satisfying. I don't know how else to describe it. Beloved characters die (I would have been disappointed if everyone had survived. That just isn't realistic.), but all of the plot threads are now woven together in a way that makes perfect sense. I had been wondering how Rhiannon was going to wrap it all up. Things had started to look a little bleak for them. ;)If you didn't have the chance to read along with the serial as it was released, that's okay. Serials aren't for everyone. Consider it a trilogy and dig in! I am proud to say that IDWMA is being crowned as my favorite vampire series of all time, and I don't see it being dethroned anytime soon.

There is no advice on brainstorming topics, details, etc. The author spends more time discussing her credentials and highlighting client testimonials than offering useful advice. It's a very short book. I read the whole thing in 15 minutes. The sample essays are helpful.

Read the reviews from other people and decided that a 99 cent investment was well worth getting additional pointers to complement my application. This book provided me with additional details that I would have left off my application. There is no way you can go wrong in investing in this book. There are nuggets of information worth much more than you will spend on this book. It's easy to read and if you get just one point from the book, you have gotten your money's worth.

My child has expressed interest in this subject, so I thought this was a basic, fairly inexpensive way to test her interest. The book is well laid out, and realistic in its objectives. The examples are explained in a manner that it easily understood without being patronizing. I really enjoyed this book and I'd recommend it for kids and adults who want a concise book that gives you a basic understanding of Python without being overwhelming or pretentious.

Looks like a solid intro to Python for kids - and some adults as well By Jerry Saperstein My grandson has attended computer camps for the past two years and has learned a smattering of CSS, Javascript, HTML, Scratch and Python. He’s been talking a bit about learning more about Python, an aspiration I heartily endorse so I ordered this book with him in mind. Like most kids, he has a short attention span, but he is quick to pick up on things. “Python For Kids For Dummies” might involve him to the point where he picks up some basic programming skills. Aimed at pre- and early-teens, it sets out a four-week course in programming with Python. The author has done what appears to be a good job of creating projects that the aspiring programmer can do without talking down to them. Week 1 is essentially an introduction to programming and the Python language. Week 2 has the kids building word guessing games before moving on to Week 3 and creating word games. Week 4 moves into Object Oriented Programing concepts with address book and math trainer projects. There’s a “Bonus” project that introduces TKInter, the graphical programming front-end for Python. Each project is presented as a series of steps. Explanations of various functions, delimiters and such are interspersed. Overall, this looks and feels like a solid introduction to programming in Python. Quite frankly, for the adult who wants to learn how to program but is intimidated by more advanced texts, “Python For Kids For Dummies” would also be a good place to start.As for my grandson, time will tell how it works for him.Jerry

After retiring at fifty, he was able to pursue the dream seriously. From that dream came the Birth of an Assassin series.

Birth of an Assassin 2: The Turkish Connection By megHan Last year, I read the first book of the Birth of an Assassin series, Birth of an Assassin, for a blog tour and loved it. So, when I received an invitation from the same blog tour coordinator, specifically saying that he requested I be part of his blog tour for book two, I couldn't possibly say no. After reworking my schedule a little bit, I took the book on - and I am SO glad that I did.The Turkish Connection was a great book. From the very beginning, I was wrapped up in Mehmet's story and could not put the book down. The things that this boy not only endured - but LIVED through - were shocking and heartbreaking, but at the same time, the adventure that he went on, and watching him become a man, were fascinating. The prologue, which contains the story of what leads Mehmut to where he is now, is creative and, when everything comes together in the end, I have no words.Rik Stone has a way of writing that I love. He makes you feel like you are right there with the characters, going through what they go through, feeling what they feel, and it makes reading the stories he creates so much more believable and so much more, for lack of a better word, thrilling.Even though I really liked Mehmet, I think my favorite character in the story was Senturk. He just wasn't like the other boys.This book was definitely better than the first one and I can't wait to see what story comes next. A definite recommend for people who love thrillers, characters that you can really care for, and adventures that leave you unsure of where you are going until you finally get there.Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Fantastic By Phil Bolos The Turkish Connection: A Birth of an Assassin by Rik Stone puts the reader into the slums of Istanbul in the 1950s and 1960s. Levent has come up with a daring plan to steal money from a friend and start a new life for him and his son. On the night of the robbery, he is caught and sent to a watery grave leaving his son, Mehmet, fatherless and motherless. Through a misunderstanding, Mehmet is kidnapped and dragged into the life of a thief. Slowly, he becomes and expert at the craft and a master with a knife. However, the man who murdered his father learns that he is still alive and uses his connections with the Istanbul police to have Mehmet killed. Wounded in the fight, Mehmet manages to jump offa bridge where is is picked out of the water by Yuri, a fisherman who was also his late father’s friend and a Spetsnaz agent. Keeping the boy hidden from the police, Yuri nurses him back to health and teaches him how to be a soldier and operative. Unknown to Yuri though, Mehmet has a deep burning desire to become the best warrior he can be because he knows who tried to have him killed and will soon learn of the connection back to his father’s murder. The Turkish Connection is an intense, emotionally driven novel focused around thieves, criminals, and undercover agents. With each page, the reader becomes more interested in each of the characters and yearns to find out what will happen next. Stone’s protagonists are just are intriguing as his antagonists and as the reader grows to appreciate and hope for the success of the heroes, so does the reader come to hate the criminal slime they are pitted against. Fans of military fiction and historical fiction alike with enjoy this edge of your seat read.

Set in Istanbul of the 1950’s Stone writes a believable suspense thriller with unforgettable characters, especially Mehmet and the street urchins. I couldn’t get enough of this remarkable page-turner and the author’s uncanny yet powerful ability to tell a story. I found this book sometimes dark, however deep and engaging a perfect mix of suspense and so much more - an exceptional read.

In that awful moment, most of humanity dissolved into a rusty, sandy residue, captured in mid-moment as they went about their everyday chores. The fraction of humanity who survived were faced with finding each other and rebuilding a life void of all the rules, laws, and customs of society. Small groups of people gravitated together to form communities numbering mere dozens of people. New morals, customs, and priorities were established as they attempted to survive. One questions was forefront in their minds. It was the first questioned asked when they encounter each other. It was; “What happened?” The fourth book in The Event series, The Genesis Particle, finally provides the answer to that question. Slowly the survivors realized they had been changed, altered. The found that not every female was fertile. Two-thirds of the surviving females had been rendered barren. The implication of that effect was astounding, especially in a world where survival of the human race depended on procreation of the species. Therefore, when it was discovered, in The Event—The Genesis Particle, that a surviving scientist not only knew the cause of the dissolution of humans across the world, but he also had the cure to the infertility, it became paramount that he be gathered into the safety of the Ranger Republic, where he could be protected and encouraged to complete his research and hopefully reverse infertility in the females.

Not only are you taken on a roller-coaster ride of fast paced action, but many questions raised in the first three books are answered in the process. The author has managed to weave an unbroken tapestry of narrative throughout all four volumes of The Event and that is the hallmark of any good storyteller. With this latest effort, Mr. Boutwell has earned a rightful place among the best of storytellers. Do yourself a favor and read the whole series.

Sci-fi is why I originally picked it up, I am a huge fan of "the final frontier". This book is more about the human condition and human actions and reactions to certain situations. (I don't want to give away too much!) This book is smart and witty. I loved it.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Promising Potential By JD This book was given to me by a friend from the UP. While she is an avid reader, she simply "couldn't get into it." After reading the book, I can see why. What this book really needs is a strong editor. The initial concept may be sci-fi, but the story is more of a discussion about the human condition. However, there is almost thirty chapters of exposition. The books conclusion is exciting and very thought provoking, but it simply comes too late. A lot of events occur, a lot of scientific theories are explained, but no real emotional growth or experiences happen to the main character until the book is almost over.

Chappell This tale of sex, drugs and rock and roll ricochets between the Eastern and Western Shores of Chesapeake Bay in a multi POV thriller in the Carl Hiaasen style of breakneck pacing, vivid characters, sense of place and plot. A naive watermen who's rarely been outside Kent Island is recruited and sent to Baltimore's notorious Block by a local Silverback to retrieve his waywatd daughter Dee from a life of prostitution, coke and a smarmy pimp named Salt. Shadowing Tooey, the naive watermen, is a hulking guy named Clacker, short on brains and big on brawn, who provides the muscle. Somewhere along the way to the notorious red light district in it's heyday, Tooey meets a nice girl with artistic ambitions and very little hope. When Salt, coked up and nasty, loses a mysterious box, and comes after Tooey, Clacker and Dee looking for it, the action explodes off the page. A tightly plotted caper with a strong ambience and a cast of film noire characters that would thrill Robert Mitchum.

You don't have to be a fan of the genre to like this story--that's how good it is By Kenton Kilgore Gritty, dark, sometimes seamy and violent, BLOODY POINT 1976 is not for kids or the faint-hearted--but it's for everyone else who loves a suspenseful, sometimes wrenching story. This is not a genre I ordinarily read, but I loved this book. Lewis' depictions of the beautiful, tranquil Chesapeake Bay--and the honest, hard-working water men who ply--it brilliantly clash against the sordid, menacing, yet almost irresistibly-tempting "Block" of 1970's Baltimore infamy --and the human predators (and prey) who infest it. The plotting is tight and the characters are excellent: I will never forget Tooey, Dee, and especially Salt Wade. And I did *not* see that ending coming! To say more would give it away.Brent Lewis has made his name as a chronicler of Eastern Shore history; now, he makes his debut as a writer of fiction. An impressive debut, and I hope to read more stories from him soon!

By Harold Kniceley Brent's first novel is a hit! The flavor of the slow paced Eastern Shore contrasted with Baltimore's " Block " sets up a world filled with suspense. This fast paced book holds one's interest from the beginning to the end. Well developed characters populate the pages and lend color to this read.Anyone interested in suspenseful thrillers will enjoy the many twists and turns offered up by the author. It took an Eastern Shoreman to tell a tale like that of Tooey's heritage on the shore, and contrast it with a place usually not frequented by Sho' men.Surely there will be more offerings from one so talented......perhaps a sequel?
