Pursued by the Union army, Morgan's Raiders blazed a trail of destruction unparalleled in Civil War history. Only a handful of Morgan's men lived to tell the tale... For seventeen years, Ty Mattson never knew if his father survived the Mexican War. But when he receives news that his father is alive--and he's joined the Confederate forces of General John Morgan--Ty leaves home to enlist with the Raiders...Owen Mattson turns out to be everything Ty imagined he would be: a good man, a true mentor, a great soldier. But a Confederate assassin's bullets nearly divide father and son yet again. From the blood-soaked chaos of Morgan's devastating defeat at Buffington Island to the harsh brutality of a Union prison, Ty Mattson will do whatever it takes to fight and survive. For his father. For the love of a beautiful woman. For the life and the land he treasures.

Stump Woolard’s fictionalized history novels visit the Civil War for the first time.Morgan’s raid is personalized by young Ty Mattson leaving his grandfather’s comfortable farm to join the troop hoping to find his estranged father. Seventeen year old Mattson’s coming of age at war and on the trail is a realistic dose of hardship, fear, adventure, violence, learning and teen hormones.Woolard’s accurate view of rugged campaign life engages a cast of empathetic characters that will carry readers to the last page in the best combat tradition.Owen Mattson, Ty’s father is a daunting leader of Morgan’s raiders. Owen is in peril from Rebel revenge seekers from his Texas Ranger days as well as Blue Belly Yankee troops pursuing the raiders.Ty finds a love interest that must withstand family and military conflict. The raiding route includes realistic visits to small town and farms in the Ohio and Indiana. My grade school neighbored Camp Chase prison cemetery in Columbus, Ohio and I saw hundreds of tombstones tolling the high casualty rate of Civil War prison camps. Ty Mattson’s stay in the infamous Camp Douglas near Chicago personalizes inmate’s struggles with cruel guards, rampant disease, near starvation, and brutal weather.Woolard incorporates the reader in the daily life of men on an historic mission who pay a great price for the cause of secession. Woolard’s books are always a thought provoking historic episode providing quality entertainment.

Shaner If you like historically accurate novels, then Raiding with Morgan is a book you will enjoy. It tells the tale of a young man estranged from his father who joins up with Morgan in Kentucky so he can meet his father. As the raiders travel through Indiana and Ohio, you learn the reason as to why the men are each estranged from their fathers. Because the young man is a new soldier, you get the perspective of what it was like to be behind enemy lines as how the Northerners viewed the Southerners and vice versa. The second half of the book tells what the young man experienced in a prison in Chicago, and how the conditions changed based on to what was happening to Union Prisoners in Andersonville. If you like the Civil War, or just like a good read, this book is for you. I can't wait to read the next book Mr. Woolard writes.

By Vegas Reader If you have the least taste for history and the Civil War, if you enjoy a gripping tale, if you love a can't put it down action adventure, Raiding with Morgan is the book for you...I hated it ending as I'll not find another as compelling as Woolard's book. Historical accuracy at it's very best. Don't miss this one. It'll stay in your library to be read again and again.

On the Miami River of the 1880s, amid exotic tropical blooms, terrifying reptiles, and devastating storms, the settlers include one lonely, bewildered girl. Theena Theophilus, at home in the Everglades or on the bay, wants only to love and be loved. Fearing the taint of her mother’s scandalous past, she strives to live a life of virtue and integrity, yet is pulled toward a love that can never be hers. From a girl too desperate to be wise she becomes, through pain and heartbreak, a woman who at last finds her honor and her dreams. Once again, Gretchen Craig presents a page-turning historical novel of insight and compassion. Theena and her sisters are flawed, engrossing, and totally believable.

About the Author Gretchen Craig's lush, sweeping tales deliver edgy, compelling characters who test the boundaries of integrity, strength, and love. Told with sensitivity, the novels realistically portray the raw suffering of people in times of great upheaval. Having lived in diverse climates and terrains, Gretchen infuses her novels with a strong sense of place. The best-selling PLANTATION SERIES brings to the reader the smell of Louisiana's bayous and of New Orleans' gumbo. CRIMSON SKY evokes the lives of people living under a searing sun among the stark beauty of mesas and canyons. THEENA'S LANDING summons the sweltering humidity of the Florida Everglades, the flash of scarlet ibis, and the terror of being stranded in a hurricane. Readers of romance and readers of historicals find that Gretchen's novels straddle the fence. Fortunately, there is a category that fits her novels very well. By NR THEENA'S LANDING lures the reader into a world of dark passions, family scandals, and bitter heartbreak. Redemption saves Theena while her sisters, Aphrodite and Hera, must find their own way to happiness. Once more Ms. Craig packs a powerful punch as she explores the vagaries of the human heart in the lush tropics of Florida in the 1880s. A must read.

Sultry Florida Everglades coming of age story By D Gimarc In the same vein as "Grapes of Wrath","Giant" and "Oh Brother Where Art Thou," THEENA'S LANDING is a test of family loyalties and the lengths three sisters will go to, in order to find their futures following the death of their father. Gretchen Craig takes us deep into the rich, rare and sultry depths of Florida's Everglades in this gritty coming of age tale.

Now I am a fan. This is a beautifully written story of a young woman's struggle to survive in a disappointing marriage. Theena is one of three sisters making her way in the the Florida everglades after the death of their beloved father. All are beautiful but each very different in their aspirations and their approach to life. After the death of their father Theena's two older sisters abandon her to make their own way, one moving north to find a rich husband and the other marrying the man she herself yearns for until her sister traps him with a pregnancy. Heeding her fathers deathbed request, Theena marries for what she believes is love only to question that decision when she learns the truth about her husbands real love. Before marriage she gives herself to a childhood friend in a moment of loneliness. This slip has consequences that she tries to hide from her new husband and his mean-spirited mother who believes she is beneath her son. This story has twists and turns that will surprise you and tender moments that will touch your heart. Three love triangles make this story interesting. The author has a talent for drawing you into beautifully written scenes where you feel the heat and smell the everglades. I don't give 5 start ratings very often but this one is well-deserved.

The year is 1888. Justine Holloway finds herself an orphan after her parents die in a horrific fire. She is sent to live with her godparents, Harold Mendenhall and his sister Frances. On the boat ride home, she meets Amun Farouk, a handsome Egyptian Ambassador who is also sailing to England to meet her godfather. What Justine does not realize as she dons the veil of mourning is that Harold runs a secret organization under the nose of polite society, much to the dismay of his genteel sister. The Council was created for the protection of humanity from the Varius, refugees from a parallel universe who shift their form while others channel the forces of magic. They seek refuge in Victorian London, hidden in the slums, easily forgotten until a human ends up incinerated or sucked dry. Drawn into the plot against her will, Justine finds herself the object of a vampire’s lurid obsession. According to ancient texts, vampires kill humans for fodder, their blood and the air they breathe inferior, but this killer has other intentions for her. Does Justine’s survival depend on Amun or will he kill her to save humanity?

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. SEASON OF MISTS is a beautiful exploration life in 1888 Victorian England....with dark magic and skin walkers, of course.... By John Yeo Jr. Jen Corkill's expert and intimate knowledge of late 19th century England shines through in every page of SEASON OF MISTS.Ms. Corkill took me by the hand and guided me through the crowds of well-to-do upper class as I met the young heroine Justine Holloway, and her curious but improper infatuation with the Egyptian ambassador Amun Farouk. What I really enjoyed about this book----apart from the fantastic elements of skin walkers, vampires and other dark threats from another dimension---was the little mundane scenes that were sprinkled throughout. The sheer hell of putting on a corset, the intimidating expectations of a young woman being presented before the wealthy upper class for the first time, the blunt realities of the limited choices women had in their lives back in 1888.....these are world-building techniques that made the past come alive for me as I read. These same colorful layers can also be a weakness. I can see how some readers, expecting action and adventure and intrigue galore, might be put off by the occasional slow pacing of some of the chapters. But if you're ready to take a colorful tour of living in Victorian-era England along with a good dose of dark magic, shape-changing heroes and what lies on the other side of that portal in the basement of the museum.....SEASON OF MISTS is an experience you'll want to indulge in.

A very fun read By Richard D Mellinger Jr Season of Mists reads like an episode of Downton Abbey if the characters were all dropped into the middle of a fantastic paranormal fiasco complete with shape-shifters and vampires. If you don't love the well imagined characters and witty dialogue, I have my doubts about whether or not you are a real person.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thumbs up on this one! By Pamela J In the height of the Victorian Age in England, the stage is set with a plethora of characters ranging from the enigmatic and mysterious Egyptian Amum Farouk to ingénue Justine Holloway; from renowned archaeologist Harold Mendenhall to tall and rugged Doran Stewart; from Quinn the Butler, who upholds a sense of propriety to Molly, a fiery Irish kitchen maid, who struggles to gain propriety. From a London society drawing room to the Egyptian Room in the British Museum, and amidst the dark, seedier streets of London, author Jennifer Corkill successfully builds anticipation to the point that left this reader breathless, turning each page and hoping the story would never end! Each chapter dares the reader to venture further into each character’s story. And each chapter will not disappoint. On the contrary, you will be excited, charmed, anxious, cheering, booing, and always engaged. Your imagination will soar and your curiosity will be piqued as you travel from a foot of snow with a blast of frigid weather to the misty, gas-lit cobblestone streets under a starry, star-filled night. Within a few chapters, you will become aware of the creatures that stalk the streets and haunt the young women of London and of the Vale, a place as mysterious as the people who inhabit those lands. But first, Justine must finish her voyage to England, during which she soon learns, that she is being pursued by something or someone who has a mysterious hold over her…could it be one of those creatures of the Vale? Or perhaps the intriguing Mr. Amum Farouk, who holds her transfixed with his intense presence and steady stare? You will have to see for yourself. I did and I am so glad I did.A good read? Absolutely! A sequel? I can’t wait!

Set in seventeenth century Amsterdama city ruled by glittering wealth and oppressive religiona masterful debut steeped in atmosphere and shimmering with mystery, in the tradition of Emma Donoghue, Sarah Waters, and Sarah Dunant. There is nothing hidden that will not be revealed . . . On a brisk autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt. But her new home, while splendorous, is not welcoming. Johannes is kind yet distant, always locked in his study or at his warehouse officeleaving Nella alone with his sister, the sharp-tongued and forbidding Marin. But Nellas world changes when Johannes presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. To furnish her gift, Nella engages the services of a miniaturistan elusive and enigmatic artist whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in eerie and unexpected ways . . . Johannes gift helps Nella to pierce the closed world of the Brandt household. But as she uncovers its unusual secrets, she begins to understandand fearthe escalating dangers that await them all. In this repressively pious society where gold is worshipped second only to God, to be different is a threat to the moral fabric of society, and not even a man as rich as Johannes is safe. Only one person seems to see the fate that awaits them. Is the miniaturist the key to their salvation . . . or the architect of their destruction? Enchanting, beautiful, and exquisitely suspenseful, The Miniaturist is a magnificent story of love and obsession, betrayal and retribution, appearance and truth.

No me gustó
