I am not usually a "romance" fan, but this novelette was a joy to read. Good characters, a gripping story and a hopeful and uplifting message as well. Highly recommended reading!!!!!

Throughout his life, Sir Fred Hoyle was, apart from being one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century, a prolific writer in the fields of science fact, science fiction, politics and autobiography. Almost all of his books are now out of print, yet their messages remain as valid today as they did in the period in which they were written. As these books are not readily available, the reviews of them in Francis Andrew's work serve to provide a flavour of their contents and the sentiments which they express.

Bhatnagar Complimenting a cook in restaurant for a nice meal or a street artist - be it a painter, musician or juggler, is a cultural trait too. By and large, Asians lack in this respect. Bathinda, the town, where I grew up, is in a region known for its rough and rowdy life styles. Cultural sophistication was unheard of in the 1950s. I realized this deficiency when I moved to the US. For a while now, I have been trying to cultivate complimenting, but it still has a long way to go in terms of its spontaneity.Well, there is a scenario of books. I have read hundreds of them. Did I ever drop a line of appreciation to any author? Never. Did I tell my friends a book after reading it? Occasionally, as reading of books was considered weird then. The focus was to remain only on the school and college textbooks. The Sunday sections of the English newspapers published one or two book reviews. The reviewers were ‘friends’ of the editors. I think the reviewers were paid.Moving fast forward. For the last five years, Amazon, Google and several online sites have made the reviewing of any article, product and service a way of digital life. For instance, my nephew often eats out at different restaurants. He takes pictures and posts them with his comments on a website. He has a following of 100 people! All these thoughts are triggered by my decision to write a review of the book that I have been enjoying reading off and on for the last three months. Francis A. Andrew is the author of A Great Man of Science (2015), a biography in a unique format. Andrew has been teaching English for the last 40 years. His interest in sciences, computers and theology are the product of his passion for knowledge and/or the system of education under which he studied in the UK. He is an established author of nearly a dozen books on science fiction. This book of only 176 pages has 73 lucid write-ups on literally anything that the great astronomer and cosmologist, Sir Fred Hoyle (1915-2001) wrote throughout his life. Andrew has read every one of Hoyle’s books, articles, notes, and pamphlets! Afterwards, he wrote a review of each piece. This book is a collection of Andrew’s reviews of Hoyle’s works – thus, a unique ensemble! Writing this book is Andrew’s way of expressing his gratitude towards Hoyle. In such a format, any young student or layperson who is curious about the universe, its galaxies, Big Bang Theory vs Steady State Theory, Black Holes, etc. can get a good understanding of such topics from this book. The main ideas are ploughed back in different settings. It helps persons, who are curious about ‘Out There’. However, the book has little in the way of complement of Hoyle’s life in his science. Still, the book commands readers’ attention.Satish C. BhatnagarFeb 17, 2016

The author follows three disappointed Confederate soldiers as they leave for home in Arkansas after the last Civil War battle in North Carolina. As the three friends travel the poor country roads back west, they are exposed to the ravaged South and most of the major problems of the early Reconstruction period. The men observe the ruined Southland, the burned homes, farms, and plantations. They encounter homeless whites and numerous bands of wandering, freed Afro–Americans, all poor and hungry. Cruel Union soldiers and lawless Rebel soldiers, including deserters, only make things worse. And very quickly, the travelers realize that a new force has developed in their beloved Southland. The Ku Klux Klan has begun to fill the lawless void in the South. The question — is the Klan an ally or an enemy? Earl Forrest, with a wife, Emily, and a small daughter in Helena, Arkansas, worries constantly about his small family and their welfare. Al Emerson meets a beautiful, young woman who was raped during the war. She has a black child. But in love, he swears to return to Georgia in the immediate future and marry his new love, Rachel. The third soldier, Murlan Skidoff, known to his friends as “Squirrel,” worries about his older mother, father, and older sister, Mavis, and whether they survived the war. And finally, a black Rebel, Jim Washington, befriended by the white Rebs, will join up with the men and become a dear friend as they move back to their homes in Arkansas. Jim wonders how his mammy, a slave cook on an Arkansas plantation, is surviving after being freed. The four men will definitely come to realize that the Reconstruction era is one of the darkest periods in the history of the Southern United States.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Jimmy and the gang are back! By Tator426 I loved this book! It picked up right where the 2nd book left off so you're thrown right into the action. Book 3 continues Jimmy's story and you delve a bit deeper into each of the supporting characters. Richard Brown writes in a way that is easy to read and provides a bit of humor in bad situations. The characters he creates makes you actually like them and care about them. The book is fast paced and doesn't let up. I found myself flying through the pages, even though I didn't want it to end. I read this book in 1 day and am eagerly awaiting the next installment! I highly recommend this series (and author) to anyone!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Best yet By aly chalmers Really enjoyed this one all of this author's book so far. Riveting story continues. Excellent ending. Definitely waiting for next book in the series.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. For Zombie lovers everywhere, a really great read!!! By Rebecca Barnes Continuing the journey of Jimmy, your typical nerd, Peaches, the ex-hooker, Ted, the gun expert, and Robbie, the cop, we find the gang on the road to New Orleans in search for Robbie's eight year old son. When they finally get there, they find the Big Easy overrun with hundreds of thousands of flesh ripping hungry fiends crowding the streets. Survival is key and the gang goes through many adventures until they get to their destination. This, the third novel in Richard Brown's The Dead Highways series, is probably the darkest yet, but I loved the grittiness and the savagry he put into this one. It's a gritty and savage World now, and the Author does an admiral job of taking you there, with visual description and great detail to describing New Orleans. I really loved this novel, I think you will too! If you haven't read any of the Dead Highway series yet, I recommend buying all three at once. I guarantee you will be glad, because this story os one of those I never want to stop. Fans of the TV show The Walking Dead will know exactly what I mean, you really get to care for these characters...it's not all about the Zombies! There are LOTS of Zombies though, so nobody will be disappointed, I sure wasn't! I loved these books and if you love really good Zombie fiction, you will too!!!

Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins, better known as Anthony Hope was an English novelist and playwright. He was a prolific writer, especially of adventure novels. He is remembered best for two books, considered classics of English literature, included in this volume: The Prisoner of Zenda (1894) and its sequel Rupert of Hentzau (1898). These works are set in the contemporaneous fictional country of Ruritania and spawned the genre known as Ruritanian romance. Zenda has inspired many adaptations, including a 1937 Hollywood movie. We have also included a third novel, SOPHY OF KRAVONIA, considered the other novel of this same genre written by Hope.

Money, greed, and arrogance - that's what now characterizes the standardized testing business in the United States. The United States Department of Education (USED), with its deep pockets and an alliance with testing and publishing houses, print and digital media, and universities, has created an "institutionalization of testing" scheme that guarantees an obscene profit for each of these entities.

Who has the courage to stand up for our students and teachers to combat the perversion of equity and fairness that this diabolical partnership perpetrates on our schools year after year?

It takes a special group of individuals to fight this conspiracy. Join Teddy Jackson (superintendent); his daughter. Margradan (special education student); Tylerbrown Kennedy (principal); and Mimi Spenser (teacher) as they encounter murder and kidnapping in their fight for our nation's students and teachers. Their story will inspire educators and curious listeners alike.

Cinnamon Snarl is a must-hear for anyone who cares about the future of America's schoolchildren and the everyday heroes who have accepted the calling to teach.

CS describes a money-flooded mandated school testing environment and the power players that are willing to do whatever it takes to keep power and guaranteed customers. I read the book and also listened to the audiobook. Although Cox is a first time author, his ability to paint a suspense my picture is great. I enjoyed the book and recommend it to anyone who suffers with Common Core, NCLB, teaching to the test, and a relentless testing schedule that we push on our children.

Also very practical for today's issues in our public schools. A great read for teacher's who struggle with the testing woes, as well as parents too. Highly recommended.

Episode Two… Jean-Luc’s hotel has been blown up, his friend is dead and he is under investigation by Paradise Lot’s police chief, the archangel Michael. And his day hasn’t even started yet... Hellelujah!.. The gods are gone. All of them. Their last message to humanity was: "Thank you for believing in us, but it is not enough. We're leaving. Good luck." At first no one took them seriously. Until, that is, all the denizens of all the heavens and hells started showing up on people's doorsteps. Creatures that were once thought of as myth are now refugees striving to adapt to life on earth. Trouble is, after eons of living forever, they're not very good at being mortal. Caught in the middle is Jean-Luc, a struggling hotelier who (reluctantly) promised to help these 'Others' live in this new GoneGod world. But taking care of his guests, keeping his hotel afloat and dealing with the constant drama of the Others' lives is figuratively killing him. And now that an unusually strange Other is in town, his figurative demise might soon become more literal.

From the Author Paradise Lot is meant to be consumed like your favorite T.V. show or monthly comic book. My intention is to publish an episode every month or so until the series is done. Season One - The GoneGod WorldSeason Two - Keep EvolvingSeason Three - Crystal DreamsSeason Four Onwards - TBAOf course, the road to hell is paved by good intentions... and frankly my intentions aren't that good. Still, we'll see what happens. What I can say is that having written the first six episodes, the world of Paradise Lot is coming to life. There's still a long way to go and these once-immortal creatures are difficult to tame, but we're getting there. We're getting there.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. THE GONEGOD WORLD SERIES JUST GOT MEANER WITH THIS SUPER-CHARGED SEQUEL!! By Scott B. Allan This is the sequel to the first Paradise Lot: the GoneGod World, and in the second part we have more heavenly/earthly mayhem: the characters in the GodGone World are still struggling to overcome their situation on earth as they learn to cope living in a world with each other. Each chapter moves readers at a fast pace through the story with the characters. My favourites are: Medusa the Gorgon, Jean-Luc Matthias the human, and Grinner, a bad ass that causes mayhem and destruction.Chapter 1: Unleash the Dogs of WarThe hotel has been destroyed and hell is unleashed as Grinner faces off against Jean-Luc and two Others that ends in an epic battle!Chapter 2: Spiteful AngelsThe hotel is destroyed and Jean has a dream of Bella as Medusa saves him from certain death brought on by Grinner; Michael [an Angel of the highest oder] interrogates Jean-Luc Matthias. The Unicorn also dies which is a tragic loss for our GoneGod heroes.Chapter 3: Even Angels have wicked schemesThe story moves closer as the survivors try to figure out what has happened and the involvement of the angels and they have to accept the fact that they are mortal. Also we find out that Grinner is Gravity’s Avatar, an all powerful force that threatens to destroy everything and everyone. And they try to find out that the “box” really is, why it is so important and the significant role it pay in the GodGone World.Chapter 4: The Question In An AnswerIn this chapter our hero jean-lux is picking up the pieces after the destruction of the hotel, the death of the Unicorn, Bella and Joseph.Chapter 5: Everything leaves Behind a ScentBegins with our hero telling his tale about joining Special Forces after bella died, and the hunting sword he still has in his possession. Jean sets out to hunt down the angels responsible for killing Joseph and destroying the hotel. The tension build sas you can feel the action coming on!Chapter 6: The light at the end of the tunnel of s***Now we have Jean heading out through the sewers in search of some bad-ass revenge. Jean-Lux hooks up with Hermes and gains more insight and knowledge on the GoneGod world, and what happens when the Gods left.Chapter 7: Betrayal Can be SweetGrinner is back and launches an attack against jean-lux and Hermes. The Real Deal with GodGone World Book 2:The story moves with quickening speed because of the wicked interactions and relationships of the characters; This doesn’t just expand on the 1st book, but elevates the story to a new precedent. Readers are taken into a world that challenges the imagination and stimulates sympathy for those that trapped in a place not of their making, and desperately want to find there answers to what has happened and, more importantly, how can they get out and make the world right again. This series is shaping up to deliver a power-punch that you definitely want to stay in tune with. The writer RE Vance has also written this sequel in a more passionate tone which indicates that the characters are beginning to develop genuine personalities that emerge without the writer’s control. The characters are developing into real personas that you start to care about. And, you can’t wait to flip that next page to see what they decide to do next! With just part II released, the series is already gaining strong ground and is digging in to deliver a whopping story guaranteed to entertain, frighten and capture readers’ attention.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. RE Vance has done it again! By S J Levy RE Vance has done it again! I should be annoyed at him for bringing out episode two so soon when I haven’t had a chance to go back and reread episode one yet (yes, that’s how good it was that I wanted to read it again!). Yet at the same time I wanted to steam ahead and find out the next part of the story.Episode Two won out . . . and now I’m more hooked than ever. I honestly never thought I would say that I have enjoyed reading this type of story and yet I have . . . in a way that has really surprised me. The Gone God World is strange, no doubt about it, and yet as I read on I am there with Jean-Luc, seeing through his eyes, and feeling his emotions, and it all seems so real and believable.I am going to have to seriously reschedule my time and keep up with my reading because I know that there are many more episodes to follow. Keep them coming please!

The issues and concerns facing youth in the 1960s were never as simple as a choice between patriotism and protests, despite what some believe. Instead, the era was a time of enormous cultural upheaval as a young generation came face-to-face with critical social issues while forming their own beliefs and values.

Scot Barton and his good friend, John, like many of their peers, struggle to make sense of their rapidly changing world. Both young men find themselves conflicted over the value of a formal college education.

As their paths lead Scot and John further away from their families’ traditional expectations, they find their way to the San Francisco Federal Building and a set of military recruiters. With war in Vietnam on the horizon, enlisting is one of the hottest topics of the day.

Their decisions lead them to careers in the Submarine Service, an exciting assignment that exposes two young, impressionable men to the regional culture of every area of the United States. As they serve their country, they wrestle with the era’s issues and their own values, finding the courage to develop and stand up for their convictions.

TEST OF COURAGE, by Phillip C Holland

About the Author

Phillip C. Holland’s life centers on discovery. In the early 1960s Holland found adventure in the Submarine Service.

His search for a college degree that met his needs spread across nine colleges in four different states—a search that, coupled with his naval service, allowed him to experience America’s culture in every region of the nation. After college, he jumped headlong into the entrepreneurial world, raising four daughters while he built, and ultimately sold, a business.

Only when time became available did Holland begin to write. Throughout life, he viewed every experience as a story, mentally composing his tales while daydreaming or just before wandering off to sleep. Given a chance to finally put pen to paper, those stories quickly returned. Test of Courage is the first of those tales.

I can identify with all of the characters especially considering that I am one of them. Phil said for years that he wanted to tell the story. It's something that he thought needed to get out. I agree. Way back when we were living that life we were just too young, somewhat innocent and busy to realize just what we were doing, to the extent that we do now. It was a very important job back then at the height of the Cold War and it remains a very important job in this day and age. It's unfortunate that too many people in this land don't give that kind of life and what it insures a second thought.

Very enjoyable story By Gloria Boyer This book is semi-autobiographical historical fiction that gives a more complex picture of young people in the 1960s than we normally see. In the midst of several love stories and much hearty partying and lots of growing up, there were plenty of down-to-earth facts in a historical setting. President Kennedy even made an appearance. I learned a lot about the US Navy and submarines and military training—all very enlightening to a “nub” like me. I enjoyed this story very much.

Nothing preordained Elisabeth of Wittelsbach, known as “Sissi”, to become Empress of Austria at the age of seventeen. It was, in fact, despite herself that the young Bavarian duchess, who had always been somewhat rebellious and untamed, was courted by the Emperor of Austria, one of Europe’s most powerful men, whom she finally accepted to marry. Attempting by all means to get away from the Imperial Court, this Hungarian queen of legendary beauty will carry the weight of the Crown of the Habsburgs throughout her adult life. Sissi does not adapt well to the strict etiquette of the imperial life, and the several moments she spends away from her husband are difficult. A romantic liaison with an enemy count will serve as a rare source of comfort for the empress. An unhappy sovereign, Sissi is nevertheless idolized by her people and becomes the main unifying actor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Alone at the head of a kingdom and hounded by her admirers, she will die a tragic death at the hands of a fanatic.

This book, I am sad to say, was a mess. There were plenty of grammatical errors, which I could have overlooked had the writing been acceptable. It was more like a book report that a high school student would write. I could not understand if it was historical fiction or a biography, the story seemed to switch back and forth. I really wanted to like this book, as I love the subject, but I got more out of reading her biography on Wikepedia. Does anyone know of any good books on Sissi?

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Sweet, but... By Sandra Thompson This is definitely a fictionalized version of history. If you like the sweet movies of the same name from the 1950s, then this is for you, but it is definitely not about the real, very formal Austro-Hungarian royal court, one of the most rigid royal courts in Europe.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Oops! By Marge Holt While I did enjoy the wholesome, tactical approach that the writer took, and the obvious research into accuracy efforts, to an English major, there were far too many grammatical errors which soon detracted from the substance. It became irritating then annoying. Like the proverbial busman on holiday, seeing careless driving ruins the family trip for him or her, the bumping into errors in syntax, plural vs singular verbs, and punctuation, made me put it down. Also, the use of slang phrases which are common to our time, was NEVER in use during these years nor by people in high society strata. It was as if the main characters were transported to the "jazz hipster age of gee whiz". Aw, come on! The upper crust of Europe and England didn't use the slang form of speech. Sorry, but I don't have patience to overlook more than a few.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. The Soul of Bruce Catton By Floyd M. Orr The title of Barry Yelton's Scarecrow in Gray is derived from the impression of the condition of the Confederate soldiers as described by a new recruit, Francis Yelton, the author's great-grandfather. The book is a personal, emotional tale of the new private's adventures during the final year of the Civil War, in which the men were all so starved they looked like scarecrows. Many plot elements have already been discussed in detail in other reviews, so I shall not repeat them again. With the exception of many omitted commas and other minor editing details, Scarecrow in Gray is a very professionally composed and packaged product. The elegant cover and the blurbs on the back adequately reveal the context of the story contained inside. The past tense, matter-of-fact, monolog nature of the author's writing style could have displayed a bit more punch; however, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the plot itself. Barry takes the reader right into the muck of it all with a lead character who is as compassionate as he is dangerous to those who display less than scrupulous character traits. Sometimes the enemy is not wearing blue, and Mr. Yelton does a fine job of describing such situations. The best thing I can say about Barry Yelton's poignant first novel of historical fiction is that he has brought the ghost of Bruce Catton back to life. Catton has always been heralded as the best storyteller of tales of The War Between the States, with a personalized compassion brimming from every book. His books may not have been the most factually correct history tomes, but they placed the reader right on the battlefield. Barry Yelton's first novel is much shorter, and with somewhat less description, than Catton's legendary books, but Scarecrow in Gray takes the reader into the human soul in much the same manner.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Both beautiful and terrifying... and a painful reminder By Kathleen Valentine The first thing you realize as you read Barry Yelton's prose is that he is a skillful craftsman with a gift for lyrical description. I am not a big fan of books about war but this story is deeply moving because it is less the story of a war than it is the story of how an honorable and good man endures such a thing.Francis Yelton is not the sort of man who should ever have to be a soldier. He is a farmer, a loving husband, a devoted father and a man of Faith. Yet he is in that terrible position of having to fight because, if he does not, how can he continue to be all of those other things he defines himself as? Yelton is an inherently good man, that is the thing that makes his position so difficult. He doesn't want to fight and he has no use for the sorts of atrocities and inhumanities that happen in war --- rape and murder and inconscionable behavior. But he holds fast to his personal dignity, sometimes in the face of terrible circumstances. Through battle after battle we see him travel farther and farther from his life as father/husband/farmer and yet he perseveres. This book is more an homage to the nobility of a man in a very bad situation than anything else. Author Yelton, who wrote the book based on the life of an ancestor, has given literature a protrait of a decent, strong, and ultimately triumphant man. In this era of war that we live in, it is a powerful statement about what we ask of men who fight, and what it can do to them. A message we need to be reminded of again and again.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. One Man's Duty to the Land He Loves By D. Salerni A North Carolina farmer goes off to fight a war in which he has no stake in this historical novel of the Civil War. It is the final months of a war reaching its inevitable conclusion, and most people know the Southern cause is already lost when Francis Yelton enlists against his better judgment. He is not a slave owner, nor has he any interest in the politics of the failing Confederate government. But the rebel army is desperate for men and if Francis does not volunteer, he will be conscripted. The author's elegant prose brings a poetic quality to this well-written novel. Francis, an ordinary but insightful man, sees the beauty of the land around him more clearly than most and recognizes the devastation of war as a grievous insult to the Earth and its Maker. He questions his reasons for being on the battlefield, comparing himself to a leaf floating in a river: "The leaf doesn't have a say in where it's going. It just goes because a greater power takes it."While Francis reluctantly shoulders his musket to shoot men just like himself, he worries about his home and his family, who must survive in a hostile world without him. Thanks to General Sherman's "scorched earth policy," Francis knows exactly what the enemy could do to his farm. But Southern deserters and outlaws pose just as great a threat. Scarecrow in Gray is a worthy read - the story of a war already lost and the men who knowingly served the losing side in defense of the land and the people they loved.

This short story is offered free of charge as a sample of my writing. It was an exercise to see if I could write a piece with no slow parts—you may judge for yourself.A large, cat-like creature awakes in jail. He remembers how he got there, and meets with a judge, who gives him a sentence he cannot live with. He kills the guard and escapes, only to find that the outside is more than he can handle. There is a twist at the end. Enjoy!

After forming a truce with Constantine, the Emperor of Rome, King Arthur of Britain feels confident in his newly established rule His people are united under his banner, the pagan and the Christian living together as one in his lands, and there seems to be nothing left to do but celebrate his triumph. But a storm is brewing, both within the kingdom and outside it. A terrible plague spreads through the land, killing thousands and weakening Arthur’s army. And a rival warlord is gaining power, inciting those on Britain’s borders to mount an attack. Can Arthur rally enough men to his side to stop the threat of war? Prodigious research takes you right there and keeps you there in the reality of the time By Coolfire Bannister draws you right into the age and scene and keeps you there. And, quite possibly, one may learn something of interest. I find myself going to google (keeper of all knowledge and non-knowledge) quite a bit as I read this series.A Fragile Peace is the fifth of this series. This series is based upon the real historical, and until recently forgotten, “Emperor Caesar Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus Carausius, Dutiful, Fortunate, the Unconquered,” also known historically as Arth, the Bear, and Caros. The real Carausius did not have the opportunity to enjoy life as long as depicted in this series into the 4th c (died around 293 BC), but such is quite fine when very well written as is this historical fiction. As I’ve noted previously, this series is not a love story, nor is it romantic. The author depicts reality. No music plays in the background. Bannister has done epic historical research into the age as it relates to Roman military and all relating to Britannia of the age of this very real Arthur. The main emphasis is upon action and considerations, both strategic and tactical, as must burden the mind of an Emperor (as he indeed was the 1st Emperor of Britain) who is faced with both external threats of invasions as well as serious domestic tribal uprisings. In the case of this book Arthur is also faced with the terrible and historical plague which wiped out much of his forces as well as the population. There are very personal tragedies as well as some detailed, well described combat scenes. One can even learn the construction of a light chariot. You never know ...This 5th book has a bit more subtle humor within once and awhile - not a lot mind you. Just a smidgeon.Bannister has done the readers a nice service by including at the end extensive historical tie-ins to the book’s characters, events, and locations. The man deserves a Hero Badge for his excellent research, which is prodigious (I haven’t used that word in a long, long time.)Read the whole series and get to know Arthur, who, in my opinion, was the actual foundation for what became the lore of King Arthur.

By Dean Dragicevich I stumbled across these books about the legendary Arthur after Googling “British knights and legends” some time ago. (Like most Americans with European roots, I’ve thought often – and, after a couple of cold ales, fantasized! – about being a warrior back when horses, swords and “might is right” were the order of the day. Not to mention the added attraction of damsels in distress.)Paul Bannister’s fourth novel in the series, “The King’s Cavalry,” had just been published and I devoured it, as I did his three earlier ones.I’m delighted to say “A Fragile Peace” stacks up right alongside its predecessors. And I’ll go along with the earlier reviewer that there’s a great movie here just waiting to be made. Teach Vin Diesel to speak English, instead of whatever it is he mumbles, and he’d make an awesome Scots renegade in a kilt!

18 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Made for the movies! By The Duke of Dana Point Just one request ... a loan of Mr. Bannister's time machine! The man evokes a long-gone and bloody era as if he visited just last week - and took notes. After too long a wait, we're back in familiar and finely scripted territory. The details are exquisite and the action furious - the one-on-one battle with Boartooth will have you wincing. Arthur's sidekicks are back and as interesting as always - Grabelius, warrior-bishop Candless, Scandinavian sea raider Iacco Grimr et al ... the usual suspects. Memo to Hollywood: Would someone PLEASE option this series for a movie? And ask Ed Harris if he can do a kingly, Brit accent. Grabelius - Jason Statham; Candless - Arnold Schwarzennegger; Grimr - Viggo Mortensen. Just sayin ...

Today, jQuery is used in over 60% of the million most-visited websites, and that makes it one of the technologies that every web developer should master. The problem is that jQuery is difficult to learn, especially for those with limited programming experience. But now, this new edition of our jQuery book makes it easier than ever to learn how to use jQuery to create the dynamic user interfaces, fast response times, and special effects that today's users expect.

In brief, sections 2 and 3 of this book present the essential jQuery and jQuery UI (User Interface) skills for developing professional jQuery applications. With those skills, you ll be able to add all of the popular jQuery features to your web pages: image swaps, image rollovers, slide shows, accordions, tabs, carousels, and much more.

Then, section 4 shows you how to use Ajax and JSON to get data from a web server and add it to a web page without reloading the page. It also shows how to use Ajax and JSON with the APIs for websites like Flickr and Google Maps and with HTML5 APIs like Geolocation, Web Storage, and Web Workers.

What about section 1? It provides a four-chapter crash course in the JavaScript skills that you need to use jQuery. That means you don't need to know JavaScript before you start using this book, and that makes this the right book for programmers who aren't familiar with JavaScript, as well as for programming novices. This section also becomes the ideal reference for the JavaScript that's used for the jQuery applications in this book...or for any jQuery application.

The last section of this book shows you how to use jQuery Mobile to develop mobile websites. This requires little or no programming, and it's a great alternative when it's impractical to rebuild an established website with Responsive Web Design.

Review

What I like about this and other Murach books is that within minutes of opening this book, you are developing hands-on with the technology in question, and that they are great for developers at any level--i.e., you can begin anywhere in the book, depending on your proficiency, and get going immediately. I am familiar with JavaScript but not jQuery, so in this case, I began with Chapter 5, Get off to a fast start with jQuery. The explanations and examples were so clear that I was able to add flip-on-hover effects to my site within minutes.

--Charles Zimmerman

I just finished a pretty heavy application project, the first serious work I have done with jQuery and Ajax. Along the way, I had to deal with preloading images, manipulations of the DOM, tabs, plugins and Dialogs. I had some elementary foundations to start with, but this was the first time I had to accelerate into some of the more advanced topics and best practices.

To make a long story short, I kept Murach's jQuery (2nd Edition) at my side throughout the entire project. It was indispensable to me. The answers were right there at every turn. All the examples made sense to me, and they all worked!

Beyond just serving as a good reference, I appreciate the teaching and presentation style used in this book. Coming from 20 years of database focus, this book was just right for me as I plowed headfirst into the other application tiers that I have always avoided in the past.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. mixed feelings By Jeanne Boyarsky "Murach's jQuery” assumes you know nothing about HTML, CSS or JavaScript. It starts from the beginning. The first section of the book covers the JavaScript you need to know in order to use jQuery including the DOM. I like that the book showed how to debug/troubleshoot a web app. There was good coverage of the APIs including mobile and HTML 5 web storage. I like the highlighting in longer code examples to see what is important. I learned about JavaScript strict mode and look forward to trying that in a real application. So why did I only give the book four stars? I had a few issues that got in my way of reading. The book started using $ syntax in non-jQuery JavaScript before defining it. I also thought it was odd that creating a plugin is covered before forms given that forms are common.I don't think the book was bad, but it's not my favorite Murach book or my favorite book on jQuery.---Disclosure: I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for writing this review on behalf of CodeRanch.

By Chris As I have said before, I have always been impressed by the quality of the books from Mike Murach's publishing company - this book, Murach’s jQuery by Zak Ruvalcaba and Anne Boehm, follows a familiar path. It is good to know that I can send professional peers as well as friends to such a well written text which uses common language and a useful format with that famous paired-page layout of all Murach books - yes, I know, I need to say that about each of the Murach books (because it's so good)! The primary focus on this book is the core jQuery library; however, several other compatible topics are also explained well. This is important to acquire a comprehensive view of the growing fundamentals of using JavaScript, including JQuery UI, Ajax, and JSON, plus how to use some APIs. You will need all that and this provides a good introduction to useful code. As a bonus, and another good introduction, this book includes jQuery Mobile.I suggest you download the complete code examples and work through the exercises to get a better total education. Within the review portion of each chapter, you will be presented a perspective. This is a helpful few lines written in a conversational-like manner to help you understand where you should be in the learning curve up to that point. Don't underestimate the importance of those few lines, something that is totally missing from most books (why is that?).In the review portion of each chapter you will also see a list of terms used (quiz yourself to explain each one) and a list of summary points as well as the exercises to build upon. Excellent and complete code examples are provided throughout the book to help you learn JavaScript along with HTML and CSS. Here you will clearly learn the how and why things work the way they do in hands-on exercises. The free software tools you need to work these exercises are provided via download along with solutions for you to compare. The review questions at the end of each chapter help you point to the most important areas of knowledge covered. As with all of Murach’s books (again, as I have written before), this one uses their paired-page format. Here a narrative on the left of each pair of pages is coupled with the corresponding code example for you to easily follow on the right. This should be trademarked by Murach. It works so well, that I wonder why other publishers don’t do it. Writing this way is more difficult than you might at first think. The writer needs to be judicious with their words and thoughts while crafting the topic being taught in bite size segments. At the same time the words need to be paired with the code on the right side. The reader gets this advantage without even thinking about or realizing it. This makes it easy to use each paired-page set as a reference later on for that material. For the printed book, larger than usual page size, paper quality, and type face makes it easy to read as you bounce from the written word to your execution of the exercises. An ebook is also available.Don't be confused by the title of "2nd Edition." The first edition was a similar book titled JavaScript and jQuery. With this 2nd Edition, jQuery has been expanded into this separate book, with the JavaScript portion also expanded with a 2nd Edition title. If you are quite familiar with JavaScript, you can skip that book (there is some overlap) or read it first and then this jQuery book to fit the pieces together properly (particularly the sequence of learning jQuery is enhanced by knowing more JavaScript features). If you skip right to this jQuery book, there is an extensive well done section explaining the JavaScript fundamentals that you need to move onto jQuery in this book. Read the JavaScript book first for more complete knowledge of JavaScript. Beginners should start with the JavaScript book. If you are truly a beginner (or need a refresher), to round-out your professional library, you will also want to add the companion book, Murach's HTML5 and CSS3. I suggest this, since once you have picked up the format of learning with any one of these books, you will find it easy to speed through additional Murach books as well, since the structure and format makes it easy to focus on what you need in a familiar setting.I have several books which include jQuery, usually included in a single book with other topics, but this separate devoted jQuery book lets you get a better understanding right from the beginning. The text, examples, descriptions, and even the layout all bring you, the learner, an ease of use that is missing in other books.I highly recommend this book, particularly for beginners through intermediate learners - this is the place where Murach's books are really beneficial.

The author's style is easy to read, and each chapter has exercises to reinforce the material in the chapter. Most of the chapters have relevant examples that also help to reinforce the chapter content. The first section of the book starts with an intro to web development and introduces a free IDE (Aptana). The next two chapters get the reader up to speed on just enough JavaScript basics to effectively use jQuery and DOM manipulation. The last chapter in the intro section covers debugging JavaScript in the browser. The next section (Section Two) covers jQuery core and plugins. In addition to some plugins for images and carousels, you learn how to create your own plugins. The next chapter covers jQuery validation using the validation plugin. It then finishes the section with a chapter on DOM manipulation using jQuery, revisiting the earlier chapter on DOM manipulation using vanilla JavaScript. Section Three covers jQuery UI, diving right into themes and widgets, covering many in solid detail. The second chapter covers UI interaction techniques like drag/drop, sorting, and selecting, and resizing. Section Four covers AJAX, JSON, and consuming APIs, including a really nice chapter on adding Google Map capabilities to a web page. The final section has a couple of chapters on jQuery Mobile. My personal opinion is that this is a good book, especially for someone new to jQuery. The progression is logical and fluid. The examples fit with the content, and the exercises are a nice touch to reinforce the chapter content. It's definitely a book you need to read and work your way through, as opposed to using it as a reference manual. I do wish that the section on testing covered unit testing as well, and not just using a browser debugger. If you're an experienced JavaScript/jQuery developer, you will still pick up some nice tidbits (I know I did).
