It's a must book, especially if you are studying to get the FCE exam (B2) or the CAE exam (C1). There are many units about:- Present and past; - Present perfect and past; - Future; - Modals; - Passive; - -ing and to; - Articles and nouns; - Relative clauses; - Conditions and prepositions; - Phrasal verbs; etc...Eventually, there are a lot of appendices, about verbs, the differences between the BrE and the AmE, spelling and about additional exercises. Maybe, a little weak point is the amount of exercises (not too many, in my view).

A Werewolf’s Saga Extras When you live as a werewolf, an animal that has lived three lifetimes over thousands of years, life can be empty and meaningless. It can feel worse than an eternity, but occasionally something will happen that will change your life forever. This was one of those times… Following the great battles of the great Civil War, Collins comes across others hunting the fields of the dead and dying. Faced with a standoff, he finds something that he wasn’t expecting…he finds a friend. A Werewolf’s Saga When the world began, the human race lived as nothing more than cattle. A great group of creatures ruled the world. A small band of humans with great powers emerged from the chaos, and with them, the human race fought for their right to live. When they won the world, the creatures turned to walk the night and the humans won the day. But in the shadows, the darkness lingered. A great evil lived and with it, the Black Wolf has returned…a powerful being with something no other Werewolf or Vampire had ever possessed…a soul.

Antietam 1862: A Werewolf's Saga Extras, by Michael Lampman

From the Author A little about A Werewolf's SagaI have been asked several times, 'what is the best way to read the series in order', so I decided to explain how it all formed in the first place to help fans understand the many mysteries of the Saga. When I first began writing the novels, it started with just one book A Werewolf's Saga. The story was about Jimmy Walls and how he became a werewolf. What started out as an old fashioned horror story turned into so much more. The wolf became something different. It became something special. The story followed this and it became one giant web of events. It was huge and complex. One book would never be enough, so I decided then to split it in to three separate books. After I began writing these, I again realized it wasn't enough. As a fan of mysteries and thrillers, and stories that were rich and finely crafted, I didn't want to rush through this, so to do it justice, I finally decided to split the story in to four separate trilogies, each with their own feeling and direction. This was when the full saga was born.  It starts with a simple premise. What would happen if a brutally shy and simple man turned into an all powerful beast? What would happen if that monster possessed memories? How would he deal with the pain? How would that man deal with guilt that wasn't his...or was it? The first trilogy, A New Soul, tells that story. The first book, Changes, deals with Jimmy Walls, his life before the bite, his life becoming the animal, and finally his ultimate change in to it. As the beginning of a complex story, I decided to keep the first book slow and paced. I've been told by fans that it is a little boring. Rest assured, I had to keep it boring, just like Jimmy was. As the Saga progresses the reasons for me doing this will become clear. There was no other way to do it without giving away the truth. Each book flows to the next, and the excitement flows in with it. The second book The Pack is Jimmy's journey of discovery about what he is by meeting others like him. It is his introduction into a much larger world, a world he knew nothing about, or so he thought. The trilogy ends with Redemption and his final showdown with everything he has learned so far. The story continues with the second trilogy, Returning Pain, which tells the story about the wolf's past as Jimmy comes to remember it. The Wanderer Awakens, deals Jimmy and his friends even more mysteries about the wolf inside him, an awaking of who he is, as well as with the others around him, and what they mean to the world and the pain they caused it. With Darkness Rises, and then finally The End Times, his past and those of his friends, conclude. But it is only the beginning. Now knowing what he is, Jimmy's future couldn't be told until I told the full story of the wolf's past life, so The Beginning was born. I had to fill in the gaps, and introduce new events that will clear up things to come. To be truthful, I wasn't able to get all of it in through the first books. So with The Dawn of Humans, The Rising Son, and Changing Tides the story is progressed. The Gathering Storm, which will begin with The Puppets and the Strings and move on to conclude the saga with Reemergence, and Power and Pain will finish the wolf's story.A Werewolf's Saga is in essence the story about the black werewolf named Kalima, his life and journey through the world. It is the mystery of what he is, his loves and all of his pains. An exciting adventure of an unusual life told through his eyes.So in ending, the best way to read the series, and to feel the full impact of the story and the mystery of it all, is to begin with Changes, and move on through The Pack, Redemption, The Wanderer Awakens, Darkness Rises, and The End Times. When you understand the full mystery, you will then have to head to The Beginning, with The Dawn of Humans, The Rising Son, and finally Changing Tides. To get a little bit more details of the wolf's past, read A Werewolf's Saga Extras. It will give you the best experience to understand the entire Saga. What happens after these, I'm not sure yet. I do think it will be the end of the Saga, but one will never know the true power of the wolf.

Satisfy Stakeholders by Solving the Right Problems, in the Right Ways

In Beyond Requirements , Kent J. McDonald shows how applying analysis techniques with an agile mindset can radically transform analysis from merely “gathering and documenting requirements” to an important activity teams use to build shared understanding. First, McDonald discusses the unique agile mindset, reviews the key principles underlying it, and shows how these principles link to effective analysis. Next, he puts these principles to work in four wide-ranging and thought-provoking case studies. Finally, he drills down on a full set of techniques for effective agile analysis, using examples to show how, why, and when they work.

McDonald’s strategies will teach you how to understand stakeholders’ needs, identify the best solution for satisfying those needs, and build a shared understanding of your solution that persists throughout the product lifecycle. He also demonstrates how to iterate your analysis, taking advantage of what you learn throughout development, testing, and deployment so that you can continuously adapt, refine, and improve.

Whether you’re an analysis practitioner or you perform analysis tasks as a developer, manager, or tester, McDonald’s techniques will help your team consistently find and deliver better solutions.

Coverage includes

  • Core concepts for analysis: needs/ solutions, outcome/output, discovery/delivery
  • Adapting Lean Startup ideas for IT projects: customer delivery, build–measure–learn, and metrics
  • Structuring decisions, recognizing differences between options and commitments, and overcoming cognitive biases
  • Focusing on value: feature injection, minimum viable products, and minimum marketable features
  • Understanding how analysis flows alongside your project’s lifecycle
  • Analyzing users: mapping stakeholders, gauging commitment, and creating personas
  • Understanding context: performing strategy (enterprise) analysis
  • Clarifying needs: applying decision filters, assessing project opportunities, stating problems
  • Investigating solutions: impact and story mapping, collaborative modeling, and acceptance criteria definition

Kent J. McDonald uncovers better ways of delivering value. His experience includes work in business analysis, strategic planning, project management, and product development in the financial services, health insurance, performance marketing, human services, nonprofit, and automotive industries. Kent McDonald’s book Beyond Requirements: Analysis with an Agile Mindset is a valuable resource for the entire agile team. He makes it clear – it's the work of business analysis, not the title or role “business analyst” that is an essential ingredient for successful agile teams. In the spirit of one of Kent’s agile guiding principles, “Simplify”, I’m using a mind map as a “barely sufficient approach” to share what and why I value Beyond Requirements: Analysis with an Agile Mindset. I encourage anyone involved in agile business analysis work to dip into Beyond Requirements. You are sure to find many ideas and techniques that will help you and your team do the vital work of agile analysis needed to deliver a valued product.

Fantastic overview of current practices and ideas By Gojko The most useful thing about this book is that it introduces pretty much all the currently popular ideas and practices for product management/business analysis applicable to iterative delivery. Each technique is explained within the context where it applies, with some nice tips on when to use it, when not to use it, and how to get the most out of it.I'd recommend this book to anyone working in an agile or lean software process that needs to discover, analyse or document stakeholder needs. This includes product owners, but also delivery team members who want to improve their requirements analysis skills. People new to this field will find plenty of ways to get started, and experienced product managers will surely discover some interesting gems to try out.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Useful Guide for Agile Teams By Ellen Gottesdiener Kent’s book is a useful guide for agile teams, and punctuates the importance of analysis in agile discovery and delivery. He provides an elegant set of principles, a useful set of techniques nicely organized in a Jogger-like format, and makes it real with four case studies. I particularly appreciate Kent’s emphasis on value and collaboration, the distinction between discovery and delivery, and the pithy and powerful summaries in each chapter entitled “If You Remember Nothing Else”. Get it, read it. Reference it. You’ll find Beyond Requirements a valuable guide in your agile work.

When his father and his father’s housekeeper are discovered tortured and murdered, Hunter makes it his goal to uncover the reason. Little did he know that his father had left him an unusual inheritance—a secret that spanned a half century kept hidden away—a secret that would change a date in history, the 22nd of November, 1963. Hunter’s father left behind clues that would ultimately reveal a metal box which contains damaging information connected to the assassination of President Kennedy. Little did he know the danger he would face and how it would change his world.

Hurt Even today, high level folks are protecting the guilty who perpetrated the American Coup d'état. The CIA has admitted to congress that they use taxpayer's funds to promote disinformation through the media and various authors to achieve their purposes. FBI documents have since revealed, that two FBI agents, present at the autopsy in Bethesda, had reported to J. Edgar Hoover that the bullet, now carrying the derisive Warren Commission report appellation 'magic bullet', never even passed through JFK's body. Millions of tax payer's dollars were expended by the official government sponsored HSCA in determining that there "Was a Conspiracy to assassinate JFK", yet the CIA still spends other new taxpayer money to promote disinformation still to this day! It is not in the best interest of the CIA to let the American people know that there was a conspiracy. This book is a work of fiction which proposes what dirty tricks the CIA would stoop to, in order to prevent new film from becoming public. Films collected as evidence at the scene of the real crime were never made public voluntarily. The justice department forced the CIA to release the Zapruder film. This book is a very exciting 'What If' fictional scenario of the real capabilities and machinations of our CIA inside our own country that the author suspects would happen if the CIA got wind of another film, which had been taken at the Coup in Dealy Plaza. He makes a compelling case that America is the last place you would be safe in trying to release that new film for public information. I enjoyed the book, and think I would have even if I knew that the CIA were a fictious organization. Come to think of it, definitely even more so! The only reason I withheld a star was because of one young character from a gang in this story that acted totally unbelievably and shortened the story.

Gould The characters were likable and I hope we see more of Hunter. An Afghanistan Special Forces before returning home to teach, the man has skills that most teachers would never need. These skills save his life and help him overcome an entire team of black ops agents. The plot was completely believable--in fact, it makes complete sense that more than one person had film and photos of the grassy knoll during the fateful journey of the Kennedy's. It does make the reader wonder if there was a conspiracy to erase all evidence of government involvement. The dialogue is realistic while carrying the story forward.Action packed and well-edited, this novel is short enough to make an excellent movie for an action hero, a young VanDiesel, Van Damme, or Rock. Great debut novel, hope to see more of Hunter.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. June 1882Gatlinburg, TennesseeThere was an intruder in the mercantile. In her haste, Nicole O'Malley had forgotten to lock the rear entrance, and now she was alone. While not common in this area, robberies weren't unheard of. In fact, this very store had been targeted two years ago, and her oldest sister, Juliana, kidnapped by outlaws.A shudder ripped through her as stealthy, faltering steps echoed down the long hallway that led past the private quarters, storeroom and office to where she'd been dusting shelves in the front area of the store. Whoever had dared enter after hours was up to no good.Alarm pooling in her belly, Nicole seized a large enamel pot from the nearest shelf and wedged herself into the narrow space between the high shelving unit and door frame. She lifted it high over her head. Her sister had been fortunate. She'd escaped unharmed.Would Nicole face a worse fate? What if he had a gun? What if he shot her on sight? That's why I have to be faster than him. Seize the element of surprise. The footsteps neared. Paused somewhere in the vicinity of the office immediately on the other side of the doorway. Her hands curved around the pot handles until they bit into her palms. Heartbeat roaring in her ears, her arms began to tremble from the strain. The safe containing the money was in the office. If he went in there, she could try and sneak out the front entrance. But he didn't enter the office. Instead, he stalked through the doorway. Halted inches away, hands on lean hips as he surveyed the interior. By now things like his scent—peppermint of all things—and impressive height were registering. The intruder seemed to be cataloging the goods. What was his plan? Steal the valuables and sell them for profit? He started to pivot in her direction, and she caught a glimpse of sleek jawline above a starched white collar. Nicole's throat closed up. She would not be taken hostage like Juliana. If he had time to draw his weapon, she was done for. It's now or never. She swung with all her might. The impact of the heavy cookware against his head knocked him forward. He grunted, hands going up as if to defend himself from another blow.Go. Now. The pot hit the just-swept floorboards with a dull thud. She dashed into the shadowed hallway, desperation powering her rubbery legs. A low growl cracked the air. He scrambled into the hallway after her. Without warning, strong arms stole around her waist, halting her forward movement and digging into her stomach. She was shoved face-first against the wall. His large body followed, heaving chest pinning her."Who? Why?" he panted against her ear, hot breath fogging her neck."Let me go, you ill-bred ruffian!" Raising her foot, she slammed her heel down, grinding it into his boot.He gasped, jerked, and Nicole slipped sideways out of his grasp."Oh, no, you don't."He captured her before she could put any sort of distance between them, this time seizing her arms in a painful grip. Ignoring her struggles and seething threats of retribution, the intruder propelled her into the store, snatched a silk tie from the rack on the counter and tied her wrists behind her back. Anger pulsed at her temples. "You won't get away with this," she said.He spun her to face him, pushed her into the lone chair and, shoving aside her skirts, bound her calves to the chair legs. Insides quivering with indignation, she did everything she could to make things difficult for him. She wiggled. Strained against the ties. When she delivered another threat, he straightened to his full height, folded his arms and glared down at her, his honey-colored eyes glittering with ill humor. "If you don't want me to gag that pretty little mouth of yours, I suggest you shut it."A lock of jet-black hair flopped over his left eyebrow, and he shoved it back, wincing when he came into contact with what was probably a good-size knot on his head."I don't know what your story is, lady, but you had better hope it's a good one. You'll be telling it to the sheriff here shortly."Her frazzled mind belatedly homed in on his accent. It wasn't the slow, easy drawl typical of East Tennessee. His words were clipped. Fast. Northern?Dread clawed upward into her throat, nearly choking her. Please don't let this be who I think it is. Nicole did a quick inventory of his appearance—quality brown leather boots peeked from beneath perfectly creased blue trousers. His navy vest and white shirt had been crafted from sturdy material. He didn't dress like a ruffian. Didn't look like one, either, with the clean shave, neat haircut and carved features. Power and authority cloaked him. "Did you say sheriff?""Sure did." He jabbed a finger in the air above her nose and quirked a mocking brow. "Stay put."Outrage flamed in her cheeks. "Wait. I can explain—"But he was already undoing the knob lock. "Save it."The door clicked shut behind him.Nicole listened helplessly to the retreating footsteps of Clawson's new owner—and her new boss. She hung her head in defeat. She was never, ever going to live this down.Quinn Darling made his way down the boardwalk, head throbbing with each step. That was a fine welcome to his brand-new life. He'd wanted change, a simpler existence than he'd led among Boston's elite. Nothing simple about being assaulted by a madwoman the second he arrived.Gatlinburg had the appearance of a peaceful place. Majestic mountains cradled the town, green slopes cast in waning goldenorange sunlight. Businesses lined either side of Main Street, and a white church boasting stained-glass windows sat at the far end, surrounded by rolling fields and scattered tree groves.Spotting the lone horse outside a building marked Jail, Quinn picked up his pace. His muscles ached from days of travel; his belly was protesting the long hours since lunch and his headache—compliments of her—had quadrupled in size. He wanted the female out of his possession so that he could unload his personal belongings and explore the store that belonged to him."Excuse me," he addressed the rugged, fair-headed man behind the desk. "Are you the sheriff?"Eying Quinn, the man stood, hands perching on his gun belt. "Shane Timmons. How can I help you?""The name's Quinn Darling. I purchased the mercantile from Emmett Moore."The caution in the lawman's eyes receded a little. "We've been expecting you, Mr. Darling.""Yes, well, I've only just arrived. You can imagine my surprise when I discovered a trespasser in my store. I'd appreciate it if you'd come and fetch her.""Her?" His lips twitched. "What does this trespasser look like?""Deadly." His fingers once again prodded the tender knot at the base of his skull. She knew how to put up a fight, all right. When the sheriff, who looked to be in his mid-to-late thirties, appeared to be fighting an expression of amusement, Quinn continued, "Beautiful, but in a fatal, black-widow sort of way.""Huh." Unhooking his Stetson from the chair back, Timmons nodded to the door. "Let's go take a look."They crossed the nearly deserted street. The few remaining stragglers openly stared. "Do you have a lot of crime here?"The lawman shot him an enigmatic look. "Depends.""On what exactly?""On what you'd describe as a lot."Hardly a helpful answer. Emmett Moore had assured him Gatlinburg was an ideal place to set down roots, find a God-fearing wife and pursue a new and different lifestyle—one where friendships weren't based on business connections or social standing or amount of accumulated wealth. He hadn't said a word about crime being an issue.Too late now. Quinn kept his silence as they approached the entrance. When they entered the darkened area, his captive jerked her head up, expressive eyes wide and accusing. Sheriff Timmons took one look at her, shook his head and strode to the nearest window, yanking the thick curtain open with a snap. Soft evening light spilled into the space, giving Quinn a much clearer view of the woman in the chair. He sucked in a breath. If he hadn't just tussled with the little wildcat, he might've been duped into thinking her a complete innocent. Maybe it was the bride-white dress. Or the youthful perfection of her skin, like finest alabaster, in direct contrast to the thick mane of glossy raven curls spilling from their pins and framing her delicate face. Her eyes were an unusual color a man wouldn't soon forget—lavender ringed with deep violet—accentuated by a fringe of thick, inky lashes and topped with sweeping, elegant brows. Her dainty, bow-shaped mouth added to the illusion of innocence.Timmons somberly bent to unknot the silk ties at her legs. Her lashes swept down and hot color surged in her cheeks. Quinn studiously avoided looking at the layers of snowy-white petticoats. In the heat of the struggle, his focus had been on restraining his assailant, not whether or not his actions were that of a gentleman."You might want to interrogate her before you release her. This one's unpredictable." In addition to the knot on his head, his toes would likely sport a nasty bruise, thanks to her."No need. This here isn't a petty thief." Shane paused, amusement twinkling in his blue eyes. "Mr. Darling, meet your shop assistant."Words failed him. Rational thought failed him. Those magnificent violet eyes speared him as the sheriff helped her stand so that he could free her wrists. "Fou are Nicole O'Malley?""In the flesh." The perfect lips thinned with displeasure, then winced as she gingerly rubbed the skin where the ties had chafed.Quinn winced along with her. He pinched the bridge of his nose. Way to make a great first impression, Darling. Then he recalled her culpability in the situation."Why did you attack me?" he demanded."I thought you were an intruder. Why did you sneak in here after hours?""I didn't sneak. This is my store. Besides, the door was unlocked.""I think I'll leave you two to get better acquainted." The sheriff's smile was rueful as he passed Quinn. "Welcome to Gatlinburg."Placing the ties atop a wooden counter worn smooth from years of transactions, she attempted to divest the material of the wrinkles with the press of her hands. He attempted to ignore the contrast ofjet curls against milky skin."You're three days late," she said."An unavoidable delay." Irritation sharpened his words. None of his previous employees had dared question him. But after this regrettable first meeting, he supposed he owed her an explanation. "My wagon suffered a broken axle. I assume Emmett and his wife have already left?""You assume correctly.""That is unfortunate. For both our sakes."She finally gifted him with her attention. "How so?""Because that leaves you to give me the grand tour."Her hands stilled atop the lengths of silk. "I have no say in the matter, do I?""You are in my employ." He did nothing to mask the challenge in his tone. Had Nicole O'Malley spoken to Em-mett Moore this way? Or was it just him and the fact he'd tied her up invoking this attitude? Her stiff spine stiffened a fraction more. Her glare could've frozen the rain-swollen river out back. "You manhandled me."Now would be a good time to point out he'd merely been reacting to the threat he'd perceived in her. His mother had reared him to be a gentleman, however, and so he refrained. "I apologize."She considered him for a long moment, dipping her head as if she were a duchess and he a lowly estate servant. "I suppose I owe you an apology, as well."Quinn bit the inside of his cheek to keep from retorting. He wasn't at his best right this minute…travel weary, hungry and hurting. Tomorrow would mark a new beginning between them. For now, he merely wanted to see his store.Abandoning the ties, Miss O'Malley gestured to the long counter topped with glass display cases. "As you can see, we keep the more expensive items under lock and key. Silver, crystal, jewelry." Pivoting neatly, she gestured to the shelving units running the length of the walls on either side of the hallway door. The bottom half consisted of closed cabinets and drawers, while the top half was all open shelves. "And here we have a vast assortment of goods."Quinn walked slowly past her, his attention on the haphazard collection of canned foods, boxes of wafers and cookies, tableware and linens. Mantel clocks and kerosene lamps perched on the top ledge. When he reached the end, he opened the nearest drawer and frowned at the mess of paper scraps and writing instruments. "Why isn't the merchandise more organized?""Order and neatness weren't among Emmett's strengths."Posture proud and regal-like, she folded her hands amongst her lace-scalloped skirts. While she'd spoken without censure and her expression revealed not a hint of disdain, he sensed Miss O'Malley didn't approve of the former owner's management."It's been this way for as long as I can remember," she added. "The arrangement may not make sense, but the customers know where to find everything."Quinn approached, stopping closer than necessary simply to gauge her reaction. She didn't retreat. Her lips tightened in disapproval or dislike, he couldn't tell which."Show me more."Again, the royal-like dip of her head. Adjectives scrolled through his mind and, as was his custom upon meeting new people, he began a mental list of attributes. Reserved. Prickly. Beautiful. Too bad that last one didn't appear to extend beyond the surface.Moving between the two counters, she led him down three side-by-side aisles crammed with a variety of goods—tools, animal traps, ready-made clothing, toys, books and paper products, barrels packed with pickles, flour, sugar and crackers and more. A woodstove occupied the far back corner, surrounded by several chairs and a spittoon. A checker set perched atop an upturned barrel."What is this?""This is where our male customers gather."Dark tobacco stains marred the floorboards, indicating not everyone had good aim. The upscale Boston establishments his family had frequented would never have allowed such a thing. "How often?""Whenever we're open."Quinn blinked, searched her face for a sign she was merely jesting. There was none. "Do you mean they gather here every day?""Every single one.""Are we talking an hour or two in the afternoons?""No, they pretty much hang around from dawn to dusk.""Let me get this straight—these men sit here for countless hours, disrupting the flow of foot traffic and taking up valuable space that could be used to house more items? And that was acceptable to the Moores?""It's the way things have always been done. Besides, they're harmless."She refolded a calico shirt on a display table piled with neat stacks of ready-made clothing that likely didn't bear the Darling name. While his family's garment factories currently supplied the Northern states, his father had plans to expand in the future. There was no question of the venture failing. Anything Edward Darling put his hand to succeeded.Clawson's Mercantile in the Tennessee mountains was far removed from Boston and the Darling empire, however. His father had nothing to do with it. Whether it failed or flourished was entirely up to Quinn. For the first time in his adult life, he had something entirely his own. This store was his chance to prove to himself that he was capable."Not everyone lives close by. Some customers travel an entire day to get here. This is where they catch up on local happenings and reconnect with old friends."If Quinn had arrived before Emmett's departure, he could've discussed this and much more with him. The delay had cost him. He ran a finger along the cold metal stove that wouldn't be lit for many months."Simply because something has gone on for a long time doesn't mean it can't be changed." Never be afraid of change, son. Be bold but prudent. Quinn may have earned a business degree from Harvard, but his practical knowledge he'd gleaned from working side by side with his father. He gestured to the chairs. "These are going away."She looked at him as though he'd suggested they set up a piano in the corner and hire saloon girls to sing for the customers. "Where will the men meet together?""I saw a café across the street. Let the owner of that establishment deal with them.""You can't do this.""The last I checked, my name was on the deed. I can and I will.""Have you ever managed a store before?"

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. but is great as a stand alone book By Amazon Customer “From Boss to Bridegroom” by Karen Kirst is the sixth book in her 'Smokey Mountain Matches' series, but is great as a stand alone book. This is a book about jumping to conclusions about many different aspects such as judging another person and situations that was going on.Newcomer Quinn is an interesting character that is for sure. Honestly I guess I had some preconceived notions about this character very early on that were shattered as the story unfolded. Quinn is an unusual character with all the usual hero characteristics. I say that he is unusual because of how he is going about with all the usual hero characteristics, for his humor is a weapon that he uses in all situations, yet his protective instincts he will follow regardless of the advice he is given.Nicole is a woman with her own issues. I can understand the misunderstanding at the beginning of the book and was sorry to see that was never explained in the story, well it was explained to the reader but not to other characters in the story. Nicole is so certain she knows what has been going on and how to handle things on her own. She learns plently of lessons through out of the story. There was one incident in the story that frankly broke my heart. It wasn't so much what happened, though that was heartbreaking but it was the way others reacted to what happened. To see how people could accept what happened and be upset when someone took a stand was heartbreaking. I understand that times are different but still what is right is right and what is wrong is wrong, and what happened here, I can't imagine ever being right. But then again it was a pretty important turning point in the story.Over all I have say that this was a very enjoyable story that I just found hard to put down. I hope all who read this book enjoys it as much as I did.

I enjoyed the character of Nicole. She felt different from the rest of her family regarding her physical makeup and she had a business mind. She had plans and goals, which are great, we just have to make sure that our desires are the Lord’s Will for our lives. I admire Quinn for stepping out on his own. I wish his character would have been the one to declare his feelings first, but props to Nicole for being brave! I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good Christian romance and story line. I have already read all the books in this series to date and they are all good. The author does a great job of providing a story line that is interesting, romantic, and shows God's intervening in the life of the characters. I will be looking for more of her books in the future!

I was intrigued as to what kind of man would be able to break through the hard shell that I had seen in Nicole in the previous books and Quinn did not disappoint! Yes, Quinn was captivated by Nicole's beauty, but he also wasn't afraid to dig past her walls to see her inner beauty, and he would gently challenge her to see life beyond her plans and assumptions & to allow God to work in her life. A great read!! And I found out that there will be 2 more books coming out about the 2 younger sisters . . . can't wait!!

According to that there are many books about WWII in Balkans from perspective of forces that won the war. This is not that kind of book! It is a story coming from Antun, member of Home Guards and all other forces that lost a war in dramatic and tragic fashion. It is totally surprising and amazing story, claimed to be true about war coming and finishing in area of Croatia and Bosnia called Posavina. This is sure not a standard leisure read. After about 20 pages of slow start WWII showed it's ugly face in remote villages and to unsuspecting peasants. Author describes their way of life as very hard but mostly peaceful. After initial confusion armies of every side in war at one point of time sweeped through villages robbing people of food, livestock, often forcing willing and not so willing draft to join the fight. Often people are killed just for being there. It must been horrendeus situation where uneducated, non-informed person could easily join wrong side. It is easy to judge anyone from today's point of view when we know history, who fought, who won and who was on losing side. Somehow person even in most remote place had to pick a side, and it was just too easy to pick wrong one.As war progressed basic survival and defence of home became only way of quite miserable life. Events and turmoils are kind of expected because we know general flow of war. However, ferocity of events produced always very tragic results. Winds of war bring just misery and death to everybody in it's path. The main character, Antun experienced lineup of personal familiy tragedies. This book is not for everyone. It is disturbing but I found it very valuable because it brings to the table harsh reality. Events I never knew about. Developments not found in other sources. Author claims that everything is 100% true, verified by independent research, checked by historians. Historical events with times and dates did happen and regardless of sides and ideology everybody suffered a great deal. It was tragedy of people of epic proportions.

Cillefoyle Park is a historical fiction novel about a socialist activist/bar man torn between the possibility of politics and the violence exploding on the streets of Derry at the height of The Troubles in the early 1970’s. That’s the treacherous dilemma that Dermot Lavery finds himself in when an innocent friendship with a neighbour – Harry, a schoolteacher leads them both into a precarious web of secrecy and intrigue with all sides of the endless conflict. Caught in a nightmare world of secret negotiations for a ceasefire with an MI5 agent, the IRA, and when a disloyal IRA man becomes a Supergrass, his life spins on the edge of clandestine friendships, an affair with a neighbour, meetings with the IRA and certain death at any wrong turn from any of the groups who may not like the secret meetings for negotiations. It’s a constant struggle with his conscience and the challenge of simply staying alive.

Excerpt from The American College: A CriticismThis book is based on an educational experience of almost twenty years, in the course of which I prepared many pupils for college; I tried also to observe their development during and after their college careers. Subsequently I spent two years as graduate student at two different American universities, and something above a year in England and Germany, where I enjoyed opportunities for observation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The more things change... By Ken This book, written more than 100 years ago, documents a long list of shortcomings of American college education that sound incredibly familiar. It is both startling and depressing to discover how many of the problems inherent in higher education today are generations old. If anything, things have gotten worse, not better. Grade inflation and an incoherent, consumer driven curriculum, problems that Flexner describes vividly, have become even more deeply entrenched. As Flexner makes clear, there are solutions to these problems, but they require toughness, persistence, and vision to implement. Since higher education has come to be dominated by state financed mega-campuses such solutions seem even more unlikely. No faculty or administration that attempted to implement them would long survive the political turmoil they would create, and private colleges, already under pressure financially from publicly financed competition, would soon find themselves without students to teach. Although a century old, this analysis is well worth reading for the depth of historical perspective it provides on one of the most important issues facing American culture today.

A new life and a new name … House of Rocamora, a novel of the 17th century, continues the exceptional life of roguish Vicente de Rocamora, a former Dominican friar, confessor to the Infanta of Spain, and almost Inquisitor General. After Rocamora arrives in Amsterdam at age forty-two, asserts he is a Jew, and takes the name, “Isaac,” he revels in the freedom to become whatever he chooses for the first time in his life. Rocamora makes new friends, both Christian and Jew, including scholars, men of power and, typically, the disreputable. He also acquires enemies in the Sephardic community who believe he is a spy for the Inquisition or resent him for having been a Dominican. As Isaac Israel de Rocamora, he studies Medicine at Leyden and, at age forty-six, receives a license to practice. That same year Rocamora weds twenty-five year old Abigail Touro, and together they raise a large family. During his time in Amsterdam, Rocamora has a bizarre encounter with Rembrandt, serves the House of Orange as physician, and advises Spinoza before the philosopher’s excommunication. He survives a murder attempt, learns from the great English physician Harvey, and a surprise visit from a childhood friend leads to an unusual business venture. Life is never routine or dull for Rocamora. The intrigues start with his arrival in Amsterdam and do not end until he takes his last breath. Praise for Rocamora, 2012 Finalist International Book Awards: “Rocamora is the best historical novel I have read, a fascinating story, well written with vividly portrayed unforgettable characters.” —Christiane Engel, MD, PhD, concert pianist, and member Board of Directors of her grandfather Albert Schweitzer's Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon “You have a fine historical novel.” —Barnaby Conrad, author of Matador, Manolete, and The Second Life of John Wilkes Booth

This is a sequel to the well received [[ASIN: ASIN Rocamaora: Man of Masks ]].After escaping from Spain, Vicente de Rocamara decided to settle in Amersterdam, one of the few places he could practice his newly found Jewish religion. Settling in Holland, Vicente changed his name to Isaac and decided to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a practicing medical doctor and starting a family.House of Rocamora by Donald Michael Platt might not be as exciting as its predecessor (meaning there is no castle intrigue or daring escapes from under the Inquisition's nose) however the account of the daily life of Isaac (previously Vicente de Rocamora) is just as an engrossing read. The book creates a vivid picture of the Jewish community in Amsterdam. It was very interesting to read how the Jews lived and interacted with each other and the Dutch people at the time. The protagonist has become Jewish but not an observant Jew and the community somewhat resents him for that, add that to the fact that he was a priest and even considered for the post of head of the Spanish Inquisition and you can understand their mistrust. This is an excellent companion to Rocamora: Man of Masks, however I don't feel this is a standalone book. I enjoyed this book very much, but I don't think I would have enjoyed as much if I didn't read the previous book. The historical aspects and accuracy of the book are fascinating, intriguing and as far as I can tell accurate. The characters are three dimensional and realistic. Mr. Pratt had imagined an amazing life for an amazing man, not much is known about Vicente de Rocamora, later to be known as Isaac Rocamora (you can view the entry in the Jewish Encyclopedia).

By Cynthia McArthur House of Rocamora is the continuing story of Vicente de Rocamora, former confessor to the Royal House of Spain and former candidate for Inquisitor General, now an exiled and self-circumcised Jew named Isaac.Vicente has left Spain in his long journey to find himself and peace for his soul. He has lost all he holds dear and must start anew. He has traveled to Amsterdam in 1643, seeking to find a broad-minded society and to study his true calling, medicine. Although many question his desire to start a new career in his forties, they are also flattered to be acquainted with such an illustrious person and impressed by his intelligence and intensity. As years pass, Isaac de Rocamora does find a measure of harmony in his career and new family, but as with everything in his long life, tragedy intertwines with fulfillment, and at the last he finds himself again seeking his soul's peace. This book is well-written, though it is a bit slow in the beginning, as Isaac is still unclear about his true path and does some wandering. It will help the reader to have read the first book in this series, Rocamora, to understand the impact of events happening in the early sections of this novel. The story picks up as Isaac begins to see his way and put his plans and ideas into action. I enjoyed both books in the series and look forward to the next, which I hope is not too long in coming. My review courtesy of the Historical Novel Society.
