The supposed decay in public education, whereby the United States is declining rapidly and falling behind other industrial nations, has been blamed on bad teaching and the lack of common and consistent standards. The solution to this supposed decay in public education is not only a common set of standards, but common tests that align with those standards. These tests are positioned as next generation assessments. Common Core: Passing the test? describes the development of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and the accompanying next generation assessments. It questions whether America’s public school classrooms will be able to focus on enhancing student learning and authentic assessment or whether the classrooms will become even more focused on teaching to the test. Chapter 1 provides a brief review of the pathway and arrival of the CCSS on the nation’s agenda. It also details the initial development of the two primary assessment consortia through the federal government’s Race to the Top Assessment Program. Chapter 2 delves into the two assessment consortia, the “winners” of the Race to the Top Assessment Program, and reviews their articulated objectives and their means to achieve those objectives. The chapter also explores the role of for-profit entities lurking underneath the surface of all aspects of education reform. Chapter 3 provides an overview of the promises of the CCSS next generation assessments and explores the necessary conditions for schools to be able to implement next generation assessments, such as technology integration and professional development of teachers. Chapter 4 reviews the ways in which assessment in classrooms can truly become next generation by utilizing authentic and formative assessment methods. Chapter 5 explores the winners and losers of the Race to the Top. And the book concludes with a summation of the possible consequences of the continuation of the current path of education reform. Common Core: Passing the test? posits that the CCSS assessments and this next generation of school reform will perpetuate the engine of inequity and the existing social hierarchy. The audience for this book includes educators, policy-makers, decision-makers, and individuals concerned about the privatization of higher education and the continuation of policies and reforms that perpetuate social inequities in education.

The Battle of the Little Big Horn Battle has generated history, legends, and myths. George Armstrong Custer was a popular figure, and the youngest Civil War general. His defeat at the battle by what was viewed as a Stone Age people during the Centennial celebration shocked the America public. When Custer's body was discovered here were two bullet wounds, one in the chest and one in the head. A letter appeared in the 1920's written by Bigelow Neal the son of Eugene S. Neal, a ranching partner of Dr. Henry Porter, claiming that the head wound might have been caused by a low caliber bullet. Dr. Henry Porter told Bigelow, that he was present on Custer Hill after the battle and probed the side of Custer's head and came out with a .41 caliber bullet, possibly for a derringer. Some historians accept Bigelow's story others do not. Was Custer assassinated? If so, who might have done the deed, and why? The answer might lead all the way to the office or the President of the United Sates. A lawyer from the Judge Advocates Major James Culhane is brought into the case by Libbie Custer herself. The main characters in this novel are fictional; however, many historical personages play a part. As usual it's left to the judgment of the reader.

The story surrounds the death of Custer and how an army officer doggedly tracks down what really happened to Custer at the Little Big Horn. Historical figures and places are introduced into the story to give the reader a feeling of the Old West. Recommended as a good read, with plenty of action.

As the Second World War rages, the Japanese Imperial Army enters Burma, and the British rulers prepare to flee.

But the human legacy of the British Empire will be left behind in the shape of 62 Anglo-Burmese children, born to local women after affairs with foreign men.

Half castes, they are not acknowledged by either side, and they are to be abandoned with no one to protect them. Their teacher, Grace Collins, a young Englishwoman, refuses to join the European evacuation and instead sets out to deliver the orphans to the safety of India. She faces impossible odds because between her and India lie 1,000 miles of jungle, mountains, rivers, and the constant, unseen threat of the Japanese.

With Japanese soldiers chasing them down, the group's chances of survival shrink - until they come across a herd of 53 elephants who, with their awesome strength and kindness, quickly become the orphans' only hope of survival.

Based on a true story, Elephant Moon is an unforgettable epic tale of courage and compassion in the midst of brutality and destruction.

John Sweeney is a reporter for BBC Panorama. He has won many journalism awards and is the author of five previous books. Elephant Moon is his first novel.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. A tragic, but beautiful novel, based on a true account By Boeklover When Wold War II breaks out no one is rescuing the children of the orphanage in Rangoon, Burma. The 62 Anglo-Burmese children aren't wanted by the British nor by the Burmese, so they are left with their teacher, Grace Collins, while the others flee.As the threat of the Japanese grows stronger, Grace decides to deliver the children to the safety of India herself. Their journey starts in an old school bus, but soon they end up in the jungle with nothing left and no help from others.Just as Grace starts despairing a group of elephants and men appear. They are willing to take the orphans to India. But will they make it?I love reading historical novels and one of my favourite subjects is WWII. Not just the ordinary soldier stories, but the more special ones, about people and what they do to survive, so it's logical I was immediately attracted to this novel. And I wasn't disappointed. I loved Grace and the way she tried to save the children. It was also nice to read about the children, but I had the feeling that Sweeney only `knows' a few of them. About five children are actively taking part in the story, but the others aren't mentioned once, not even a name. They are always addressed as `the children' of `the group'.The elephant men are fantastic. They give you such a warm feeling! I would like to have seen them for real. It's such an unreal situation, but in fact it's based on a true account, but unfortunately one that didn't end well.Of course I can't image what it would have been like if I were there, but this novel gives you an idea of the jungle, its secrets and the fear you have if someone is chasing you down.If you are looking for a road (or better an elephant) novel, then this is what you should read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Recommanded By Anne O. The first chapters are exceptionally well crafted, depicting the situation of the main character and her environment in both a sensitive and humorous way. I thought in turns of Graham Greene and John Le Carré, or even "African Queen" (the novel). There were later shifts in point of view which felt a bit clumsy, a saccharine romance à la "English Patient" and a vaudeville villain whose subplot I thought added only an embarrassment of grit to a situation already fraught with tension. I mean, if you are trying to escape the advancing Japanese army with a convoy of orphans through a hostile jungle, you have action enough without needing to pick Jack the Ripper on the way

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Could have been better By Jesse Conrad This volume features two stories, "Terrorformer" and "The Swords of Kali", written by Robbie Morrison, drawn by Dave Taylor and colored by Hi-Fi.First, on the art of both stories, I find Dave Taylor to be an awkward artist. He's not by far a terrible artist. However, his art falls awkwardly between cartoony and realism. The facial expressions of the characters look odd and some of the body postures of some characters looked a bit awkward. Hi-Fi's coloring is what redeems the art, providing the atmosphere and settings a very favorable palette, and softens the awkwardness of Taylor's drawing. As for Robbie Morrison's writing, I find "Terrorformer" a bit ludicrous and "The Swords of Kali" a much better story. The ludicrousness of "Terrorformer" is mainly due to Morrison's choice of antagonists - sentient suns on a smaller, human scale. I just find it hard to believe that fire could house such intelligence. How could they land on a planet without accidentally setting something on fire?"The Swords of Kali" was a gripping story. It had some quite nice cliffhangers. I like edgy stories and this was one. I really liked how the story had Hindu flavors to it. And the ending was truly touching. Morrison has managed to create an ending for us to savor.I don't think Morrison captured the Capaldi Doctor very well in his writing. I believe he's better off sticking with the Tennant Doctor as he does that incarnation very well. I couldn't entirely fault him on his writing the Capaldi Doctor though because we only have seen one season with that incarnation. Hopefully, Morrison will be able to capture this incarnation better once the second Capaldi season has been broadcast.Decent volume overall.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. "Sophistication and timeless sartorial elegance have been restored." By Brax Terrorformer is another fantastic offering and the first 12th Doctor collection from Titans comics and perhaps its their best yet. Out of all the praises that I could bestow upon these issues is this book's amazing pacing. The author and artists of Terrorformer and the Swords of Kali go out of their way to make this feel as if it were a television episode. They make the most of each and every panel, not wasting a single space. In each word balloon of dialogue I can hear Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman's voices shine through the page. They have truly captured the spirit and dynamic of these two wonderful characters. Plus, Swords of Kali is wondrous. I love the duo of Priyanka and Rani and would love to see their continuing adventures. There is one thing that makes me almost want to subtract a star. It's Clara. Now it's not that I dislike Clara, although she's no Bernice Summerfield, but her presence in this book guarantees "one off" stories. By this I mean the comics are guaranteed not to go beyond the boundaries of what the program has set. The Doctor and Clara will always end each tale happy and healthy because we know she will be there next season. I was pleased that Titan gave 10 and 11 original companions and sad that 12 had not. Anything can happen to Alice and Gabby and we the reader are along for the ride. Perhaps Titan you could swap out Clara with Priyanka and Rani? Just a thought. After all it's not like Capaldi's Doctor spends all his time with Clara. Having Clara purposefully tie's Morrisons hands by the television program and ensures that the 12th Doctors run will be just "one off" stories. Regardless these are two Amazing formers "one off" stories. Great reading. A must for any bookshelf!

She never asked for the undying loyalty of a necromancer. 1913. Austria-Hungary. Ardis knows better than to save a man on the battlefield. Even if he manages to be a charming bastard while bleeding out in the snow. She hasn’t survived this long as a mercenary without some common sense. When she rescues Wendel, it isn’t because he’s devilishly handsome, but because he’s a necromancer. His touch can revive the dead, and Ardis worries he will return from the grave to hunt her down. Besides, a necromancer can be useful in this world on the brink of war. A gentleman of questionable morals, Wendel drops to one knee and pledges his undying loyalty to Ardis. She resists falling for him, no matter how hot the tension smolders between them. Especially when she discovers Wendel’s scars run much deeper than his skin, and it might be too late to truly save him from himself.

The action starts at page one of this book and it practically never stops. The many twists and turns, unexpected plot developments and reveals, combined with all the layers of character building and magnificent historical backdrop, result in a novel that is not only action-packed and epic, but also quite intellectually stimulating and emotionally engaging. I loved the setting of this book! It's not so much a steampunk novel, as it is dieselpunk - and the first dieselpunk I've ever read at that! We've got the fantastic and beautifully described historical setting, but then we've also got guns and cars, and some other things you wouldn't see in a typical steampunk novel. I thought that was really cool and I loved how swiftly and skilfully Karen weaved together the history with the modern world. I mean, come on! Rudolf Diesel himself is one of the characters in this book. How incredibly cool is that?! Karen's descriptions of Ardis and Wendel's relationship - and particularly the spine-tingling sexual tension between them - put the steam in this steampunk novel! The sex scenes were just perfect for my taste - not too explicit, very tasteful and subtle, and yet completely mind-blowing (in a good way!). I loved the dynamics of their relationship. They are two very different people, with seemingly nothing in common, thrown together and expected to survive, all the while trying to make sense of what's happening between them and how it affects their lives. It was hot and heartpounding, yes, but it was also quite brilliant and complex. The romance between them, while maybe a tiny bit awkward and rushed at the beginning, was overall completely mesmerizing and convincing. I loved it!!! Both the lead characters were simply awesome. Ardis, the sword-wielding, half-Chinese mercenary for Austria-Hungary, and Wendel, the mysterious, badass yet vulnerable Necromancer. They make an explosive duo. Their interactions are full of tension and chemistry, but they don't lack humor either. They're both sharp and tough, guarded and wary of everyone around them, and yet their connection and strong attraction to each other is undeniable. I liked Ardis a lot, but I liked Wendel even more. He is one extremely complex character, with a dark, secret-filled past and some heavy burdens to carry in his life. The more we learn about him, the better we understand him and the more we warm up to him. He was definitely my favorite character in this book. I'll be honest, I did not expect to love this book as much as I did. Adult steampunk (or dieselpunk) novels tend to be hit or miss with me, especially if they involve sex scenes. Thankfully, Karen Kincy's Shadows of Asphodel turned out to be a perfectly balanced blend of fantasy, science fiction, history and romance, and once I picked it up, I did not want to put it down. The world and character building in this book is supreme! The action sequences are described with such amazing clarity, they're almost cinematic. And the plot line is well thought-out, captivating and full of tension (and not just sexual tension, either). It's a book I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a good story set against a glamorous and vibrant historical background. You will not be disappointed with this one!

The author, Karen Kincy, has been traditionally published, but decided to self-publish this book. Don’t worry — it’s as well-written and as edited as a regularly published book would be, and quite creative. The book is set in 1913, where the world is teetering on the edge of World War I. Only, it won’t be war as we know it. Archmages have set up the Hex, a sort of magical forcefield that keeps guns from working. Ardis, one of the main characters, works as a Peacekeeper, aka mercenary, for the archmages. While on the battlefield, fulfilling an assassination mission, she runs into Wendel. Ardis decides to take him prisoner for a possible ransom, but when Wendel brings a dead wardog back to life, she realizes the horrible truth: Wendel is a necromancer. And when she rescues him, Wendel swears fealty to her.SHADOWS OF ASPHODEL is one of the first books I can remember reading where a necromancer is the good guy. Well, sort of — Wendel is trying to be a good guy. He ran away from the Order of the Asphodel, and they’ll stop at nothing to get him back. Wendel doesn’t always succeed at being a good guy. He’s got a sarcastic and noble streak a mile wide, and a gigantic thirst for revenge that gets him into trouble a lot.As I said, I thought this book was quite creative. I’m not entirely sure of the difference between steampunk and dieselpunk, and I do wish there had been some more explanation of that. But near the end there are some great scenes with automatons that mostly made up for that for me. I love me some automatons, and I was laughing when the archmage piloting it kept worrying about scratches rather than being in true danger. As a whole, I liked the world established in SHADOWS OF ASPHODEL. The author does a good job of blending lots of things together, from magic to necromancy, from swords to zombies, from zeppelins to flamethrowers. There’s a lot of good stuff, and I’d like to see more of the world. I usually enjoy alternate history books, especially when there’s some magic or otherworldy stuff going on, and this book has lots of that.I wasn’t entirely convinced of the relationship between Ardis and Wendel. It happened a bit too fast for me, and I never did understand why Ardis was attracted to Wendel. He was pretty emo and reluctant to be truthful with Ardis. That said, I liked what the author did once they were together. The first time Wendel tries to get Ardis into bed, she refuses, because she wants them to have more than just three hours together. They always have safe sex; yup, there are some yummy, steamy scenes in this book.SHADOWS OF ASPHODEL doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, which I always appreciate. The main story is wrapped up by the end, but there are plenty of other threads left open for sequels. I am rather curious as to what’s in store next for Ardis and Wendel, as well as to see how WWI will play out with the addition of magic and dieselpunk.Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Swordplay, magic, zombies, robots....passion and revenge abound By Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf I'm admittedly a bit hesitant about self published books but upon recommendation from another reviewer who I trust...I took this one on and I was not disappointed...Shadows of Asphodel completely gripped me from page one.Karen Kincy's writing is descriptive yet fluid: the perfect combination. I felt immediately immersed in this alternate world and bought into it from the beginning. The story flowed seamlessly and balanced the perfect line between delivering the information needed and leaving enough unanswered to keep me up late reading to see what would happen next. The dieselpunk aspect is lightly peppered in and is just enough to give the book a bit more of a distinctive flavor without being distracting from the actual plot.Although I wouldn't say that I felt a tremendous connection with either of the main characters, I need greatly like them and I was totally invested in what happened to them. Ardis is an amazing heroine: tough, smart and with just the right amount of vulnerable mixed in. I loved to see how she struggled with her own identity and managed to grow and open herself up by the novel's conclusion.Wendel captured me from his first words. I have a weakness for mysterious and tortured and he delivered in spades. Add in his special abilities, a healthy dose of charm, a smidge of arrogance and how smart he is and he's a home run.The romance between the two did develop a bit quickly for my taste...but I am much better able to forgive this sort of insta-love when the characters are caught in high pressure and dangerous situations like this two were. It never struck me as too unbelievable.Swordplay, magic, zombies, robots....passion and revenge abound. Shadows of Asphodel will leave you completely satisfied...while still hoping and waiting for more.NOTE: Received for Review from Author

Wicker As an teacher and school administrator for a total of 30 years, I am delighted to see a resource like Learn In Rhythm. Over the past number of years, many school districts have cut funding for the arts programs in schools due to budget constraints. Learn in Rhythm provides an exceptional resource for classroom teachers to incorporate differentiated lesson plans across multiple grade levels in cross curricular ways. Students should never be deprived of meaningful experiences in the arts and Learn In Rhythm provides a wonderful toolbox for teachers to integrate in their classroom curriculum.Dr. Lynn Wicker

London, 1924: When Alfie Barrington is stabbed to death outside his club, suspicion quickly falls on his widow, the lovely Sarah - and on her former beau, Enoch Hale. The American journalist has an alibi, but he doesn't know her name and Scotland Yard can't find her. Determined to solve this case without the help of his friend Sherlock Holmes, Hale launches and investigation that brings him into contact with Leonard and Virginia Woolf, bohemian writers and publishers; P.G. Wodehouse, creator of Jeeves and Bertie Wooster; Howard Carter, discoverer of King Tut's tomb; and one of the greatest mystery writers of all time. A second murder sparks journalistic speculation of a curse related to Alfie's time in Egypt as a competitor of Carter and his patron, Lord Carnarvon. Hale doesn't buy that, but he doesn't come up with a better solution until it is almost too late. And in the end, it is once again Sherlock Holmes who puts it all together. This exciting historical mystery concludes the Enoch Hale - Sherlock Holmes trilogy that began with The Amateur Executioner and continued with The Poisoned Penman.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not Bad; Not Great By Drstatz This is a decent although not overwhelmingly good outing. The book is worth the price of purchase but is not one I would consider worthy of rereading any time soon. The plot isn't bad; the characterizations aren't bad; the action isn't bad. One odd item included at the beginnings of each chapter are sayings derived from different literary figures. Possibly they are there to enhance the literary appeal of the book but to me, they serve as distractions. Possibly I'm doing the authors a disservice by being underwhelmed by inclusions that have little if anything to do with the actual plot. I read Holmes/Watson pastiches looking for bang-up stories and being riveted to my chair. Although this story has some nice elements, overall, too much was working against keeping it out of even four-star range.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A slow read By Robert Stiff Scotland Yard detectives making accusations of guilt based on vague clues makes for a tepid read. Again, the large number of historically famous characters tossed in willy-nilly stretches the imagination and lends an air if unreality to the plot. The final character twist was unbelievable...a true 'rabbit out of a hat' contrivance.

By Cincy Cynic Once again the team of Andriacco and McMullen have merged reality with fiction to produce another fine tale of mystery and intrigue. You will encounter narrative twists and turns as well as challenging character developments.Be prepared to meet actual characters mixing it up with the imaginary in well constructed situations. A highly recommended read.

I went through two chapters daily (a lot, admittedly) for about 5 weeks and took the test. I passed with a 185/200. I definitely over-studied, though. This, in my opinion, is a concise, to-the-point resource. HOWEVER, I would recommend that you save the extra $40 and buy the FIRST edition rather than the SECOND edition. The "new content" was common sense ethical violations. In short, the Advanced Review book is AWESOME, but save your money and buy the first edition.

It is an excellent review. It cuts the fluff you will get in most text books. It gets down and dirty with what you need to know to get the test passed. Live with it for about a month and you too can be certified : 0

30 of 33 people found the following review helpful. Splendid book. By Esteban 'EvansGreen' Peiró This is a book about the C# language and its uses rather than a game development book. And it's a bloody good one. I start making this statement in order to avoid confusion, as at the end of the day, it's called "Player's guide".The reason why, is because it sort of points you in the right direction about the uses of the different functions and resources of the language when it comes to writing games. But then again, what this book will provide you is a solid understanding of the C# language, not only the basics, but pretty much everything you need to write thorough, elegant code as you make your first games.About the author, RB Whitaker is the author of an acclaimed series of free XNA tutorials, that I personally consider one of the most well thought out I've found on the internet. I've used them a lot, and at first I bought the book partially by curiosity, partially by grattitude for his tremendous work in instructing people on the use of XNA and C# as a game development tool.I couldn't regret it less. To be entirely honest, and after reading it from cover to cover, I have to say it's the best "condensed" and "readable" C# book I have in my programming library. I sometimes even use it instead of "Pro C# 5.0 and the .Net 4.5 Framework", to make some consultations.Again, congratulations to the author, and I fully recommend this book to any beginner or intermediate level C# programmer. I'm sure you will get knowledge out of it.

By Amazon Customer I started XNA programming a few years back and found RB's website and his tutorials over a year ago. He has some of the best C# and XNA free tutorials out there. I would recommend checking them out. When I heard he was writing a book, I was really excited because his tutorials are great. I was surprised, the book was even better than I expected. Before getting into the book, let me describe my background with C#. I've been programming longer than I care to remember in C++, Assembler, VB, and even doing some light professional programming in C#. So, I'm not exactly new to C# or programming. Still, I never actually learned C#. I had been doing VB for years and switched over to VB.Net when it came out. Between that and knowing C++, I woke up one morning and realized that I already knew C# and just started programming. Because of that, there have been some gaps in my C# knowledge.I actually wanted to be the first one to review this book because I was so excited about it. I immediately bought it and started reading. This book is less "dry" reading than most programming books, but its still a programming book. It had been so long since I had sat down and read a programming book cover to cover that I had forgotten how much work it can be trying to read a technical tome. But again, I would say this book was as easy as any other programming book I've ever read to get through.I made it about 2/3rds of the way through the book, even learning a few things in spite of having been programming in C# for a few years semi-professionally. And then Microsoft abandoned XNA and I pretty much lost all interest in C# and Microsoft in general. It was actually Microsoft's decision on XNA that was mostly responsible for me never completely finishing the book and ultimately not writing the review. But anyway, it was such a good book that I decided I should go ahead and write the review based on reading about 2/3rds of the way through it, as someone who knew C# fairly well before reading the book. That makes it a little difficult for me to take the perspective of an absolute beginner, but it appears to me that this book would be perfect for beginners as well.Basically, this is by far the best C# book I've read. It doesn't cover XNA at all, but if you wanted to do XNA (even though Microsoft no longer supports it) through Mono or something, I would strongly recommend reading this book first. The book is written in an understandable way so that even an absolute beginner can start with this book. And yet at the same time, it takes you through the intermediate level of C# programming all the way to the door of advanced C# programming (to go much further than this book takes you, you would have to get into the internals of Windows or Assembly language or something along those lines).Even though the title suggests a game, this book is not about game programming (or any specific type of programming); its about learning C#. And it does not disappoint. I would recommend it for anyone from a teenager wanting to start learning programming on their own, to IT professionals that think they might have a few gaps in their knowledge. It pretty much covers everything. And RB has a gift for teaching. He's able to take advanced concepts and make them accessible to anyone. I think that's probably the reason to buy this book over any other C# book on the market. I own a few C# books, and this one is certainly my favorite. So, to sum it up. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn, or get better at C# programming.

I tried to pick up C# again, however, I bought this book instead. I am very pleased with how the author explained each topic. The author progresses the book at a very good pace, building on top of what you just learned. I highly recommend this book to anyone starting out programming, anyone going to C# from another language, or any seasoned C# vet to use as a reference.

No one with Jessie's history of childhood trauma could make it through unscathed, and Jessie is no exception. As recounted in Appalachian Justice, Jessie is an adult survivor of horrendous childhood abuse suffered at the hands of her stepfather. At the age of 13, on a stormy night on top of Crutcher Mountain, Jessie was rescued by reclusive mountain woman Billy May Platte.

Now, at the age of 47, Jessie is a success, at least by all outward appearances. But underneath it all, Jessie still struggles to reconcile the broken pieces of her past. Little does she know, Billy May's dying wish may just bring her the peace she so desires.

In honor of Billy May's final request, Jessie has invited an agency that works with children with developmental disabilities to establish a wilderness retreat on top of Crutcher Mountain. Everything has come together beautifully, until a series of strange events threatens to shut down the operation.

Unsure what to expect, Jessie returns to West Virginia in search of answers and finds more than she bargained for. Along the way she falls in love with the residents of the Platte Lodge for Children, none more so than 10-year-old Robby O'Brien, a freckle faced, earnest little boy who was diagnosed at birth with Down Syndrome and who, upon the death of his grandfather, finds himself alone in a scary world.

As Jessie searches for answers, determined to save not only the Lodge but Robby as well, she must open her heart to the truths she discovers and place her trust in a lonely little boy. It's only by doing so that she can save herself.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful story, terrific writer....................... By kindle addict In full disclosure, I received a PDF file of this book from the author before it was released but was never asked to write a review. I don't know the author but have often commented on my love for her book, Appalachian Justice. It is one of my favorite books ever.Return to Crutcher Mountain, though different from Appalachian Justice, is a sequel and is a wonderful read. It keeps the memory of Billy May alive. For me, it was not as dark and heart-wrenching as Appalachian Justice but a really good story nonetheless with its own emotional ride. It can be read as a stand-alone but is better understood and appreciated by reading Appalachian Justice first. You won't be sorry if you invest time into reading both of Melinda Clayton's books. This book introduces a couple of new characters important to the progress of the story, but many of the background characters are from Appalachian Justice. The protagonist, Jessie, now 47 years old, had a tough childhood filled with horrible physical and sexual abuse and carries a lot of baggage, including panic attacks and a lack of trust in people. But some of the baggage is good; it helps her in her interactions with and understanding of a new major character in this book, Robby, a 10 year old boy with Down's Syndrome. They form a special bond which carries throughout the book, and they end up helping each other in very important ways. The author provided a good character study of Jessie. In addition to the character study, there were elements of suspense and mystery throughout. There was a major twist toward the end. These were the things I particularly liked about this book. In addition, I think the author's writing is very good. I like her descriptions of the area and the people, and I like the dialogue she uses because it is not stilted. The author sucked me into the story from the start and kept me interested throughout. Although the situations in the story are wrapped up in the end to satisfy readers, there is room to expand upon several of the situations and I hope that means there will be a third book in this series. Actually I don't care what she writes, I will read it.

By Sarah Pendleton Having read the first of Clayton's books with ever increasing admiration, I couldn't wait to dive into this one (gifted to me with the first) and find out what happened to Jessie. I was pleasantly surprised when this volume turned out to be a masterful mystery story. No spoilers - just ready yourself for a ride. And expect to fall head over heels in love with Robby, the second narrator in the book, whose Down Syndrome only makes him more intuitive and honest and must surely ring true to the parents of special needs children everywhere.I can't decide if I liked Clayton's first or second book better! Do yourself a favor and grab both. You won't regret it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Return To Melinda Clayton By Shannon L. Yarbrough Return to Crutcher Mountain is sort of a follow-up to Melinda Clayton's first book, Appalachian Justice, actually taking place several months later from where AJ ended. The focus in this book is on Jessie, whose tortured childhood past was revealed in AJ. In Clayton's second book, Jessie is all grown up and doing well for herself. She's got a steady career in Hollywood as a filmmaker and she's happily dating. In true Southern Lit fashion, something happens "back home," calling Jessie to return to the small town she so eagerly escaped long ago.But Jessie's roots are still planted firm in Cedar Hollow. After Billy May (Jessie's mother by heart who is the central character in AJ) passed away, Jessie turned Billy May's cabin into a wilderness lodge for children with special needs. Crutcher Mountain had been a rehabilitative sanctuary for both Jessie and Billy May, and it was Billy May's wish for other children to experience it the same way. When strange events start happening at the lodge, possibly putting the children in danger, a note actually surfaces requesting Jessie to return to the mountain.Clayton herself is a psychotherapist and her background shines through in the narrative. While the mystery here is not as complex as in her other books, there's still something peculiar going on. But Clayton has built a strong psyche for each of her characters with Dr. Wright, head of the lodge, as the center catalyst. The reader is unsure if there's an underlying evil waiting to strike out from somewhere, and so we keep reading just to find out! Add to this another mystery concerning the identity of Jessie's true father, a pair of elderly but odd caretakers at the lodge, a disgruntled ex lodge employee, and an aloof sheriff, and you've got backwood small town drama at its finest. The book is told in first person narrative mainly from Jessie's point of view, making it easy to warm up to her as a character, but there are a few chapters told from Robby's perspective. He is a young boy at the lodge with Down Syndrome who takes a liking to Jessie once she arrives. Their relationship and how they help each other provides a warm minor plot line that really gives the book heart.Overall, this is a quick read that relies strongly on the setting of Cedar Hollow, much like Clayton's other two books. And it is through this setting, that we fall in love with the characters - though often stereotypes of small town life in real society or on the old black and white TV days gone by - they are ones we relate to, particularly when we have small town blood ourselves. Clayton writes it so well, and that's why she has easily become one of my favorite authors over the past year.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Only for Serious Sir Walter Scott, Washington Irving, and/or Lord Byron Fans... By Bubba_Holtzkopf As part of the great American authors interview great European authors series...But seriously. You may not realize that Washington Irving once visited Sir Walter Scott. If you didn't, then this book contains the recanting of that tale, as well as a visit to Newstead Abbey, the home of the late Lord Byron (late even in Irving's day). It is somewhat interesting from a historical standpoint, but there is nothing in this book that is of great interest unless you are a fan of either Sir Walter Scott, Washington Irving, Lord Byron, or some combination of these...Yet, I am selling short those folks who enjoy reading historical Scottish travelogues. Oh, for shame.Still, a very unique piece of literature which is short enough, and written well enough that it might be worthy of your time, proving you are an avid reader.

King Richard III, by William Shakespeare

About the Author William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 (baptised) – 23 April 1616) was an English poet, playwright and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright. Shakespeare was born and brought up in Stratford-upon-Avon. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children: Susanna, and twins Hamnet and Judith. Between 1585 and 1592, he began a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company called the Lord Chamberlain's Men, later known as the King's Men. He appears to have retired to Stratford around 1613 at age 49, where he died three years later. Few records of Shakespeare's private life survive, and there has been considerable speculation about such matters as his physical appearance, sexuality, religious beliefs, and whether the works attributed to him were written by others. Shakespeare produced most of his known work between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were mainly comedies and histories and these works remain regarded as some the best work produced in these genres even today. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Macbeth, considered some of the finest works in the English language. In his last phase, he wrote tragicomedies, also known as romances, and collaborated with other playwrights. Many of his plays were published in editions of varying quality and accuracy during his lifetime. In 1623, John Heminges and Henry Condell, two friends and fellow actors of Shakespeare, published the First Folio, a collected edition of his dramatic works that included all but two of the plays now recognised as Shakespeare's. It was prefaced with a poem by Ben Jonson, in which Shakespeare is hailed, presciently, as "not of an age, but for all time." Shakespeare was a respected poet and playwright in his own day, but his reputation did not rise to its present heights until the 19th century.

Feinman This edition has one of the best introductions I've read: informative, well-written and with photos from productions of R III. Just the section on Macbeth and Richard makes this top-notch. Even the Folio/Quarto stuff is interesting -- short and not pedantic. This is my choice for Richard III edition.

By meiringen Stephens is a bit much as Richard (does he have to yell so often?) but the supporting cast, with Michael York in a multitude of roles, Dame Peggy Ashcroft as Margaret, Glenda Jackson as Lady Anne and Jeremy Brett as the Earl of Clarence (for once, the part is done right--Brett comes off as believable, not as a whiny brat as in many portrayals) is fantastic. Unabridged, as another reviewer noted, and digitally remastered, this recording is the best I've come across so far. Highly recommended!

Good copy By Amoeba I bought this book because while we had covered Richard II and Henry IV (Pt. 1) in my Shakespeare class, we did not read Richard III (my prof. just wasn't a huge fan). I love Shakespeare's history plays, and the discovery of Richard III's body sparked my interest. The copy is quality, contains plenty of footnotes (and a lengthy introduction) for a student or someone new to Shakespeare. The translation is good. I like the story even though I know some people that find it too far fetched in a few aspects. After all, this is a Shakespeare play...it's not made to be accurate or realistic. It's made to please the monarch and the monarch's censors. The only downside is that sometimes there are so many notes on a page that there's very little play text. It's similar to what happens with study KJV Bibles, or study copies of almost anything written in middle or early-modern English. So, excellent for a student or someone that likes those extra notes, but if you're adept when it comes to Shakespeare or are used to reading works in early-modern English, then it may be cumbersome for you. Personally, I liked all the notes because I'm out of college, and without them I'd have to google anything I needed some context on. They're also nice for lending to others.
