It's not "Berlin Noir" but it's much closer than the later Gunther novels have been By Frobisher I should start by saying that I was mesmerized by the "Berlin Noir" trilogy, and at once started reading other Kerr novels... and I hated all of the non-Bernie Gunther novels. I then read "The One From The Other" set in '49 and I liked that. So I thought it was just Bernie that I liked. Then I read (forget title) a Bernie Gunther set after the war in South America, and I couldn't finish it, as it seemed like a caricature of Gunther. Yes, Kerr has always leaned too heavily on the wise-cracking PI thing, and the metaphors get a bit much, but in the earlier Gunther novels they didn't detract much. But I just gave up on Gunther and stopped reading Kerr. Then "The Lady..." was offered to me for free as a Vine reviewer and I thought I'd give it a chance... and sure enough, Bernie's back. Do I think that this is as good as the original trilogy? No, but that may just be because this is a bit 'more of the same' and after you've read the trilogy a couple of times, Gunther during WW II in Nazi Germany isn't going to be new.Having said that, this is good, and Kerr seems to me to have regained his grip on the Gunther character. It also helps that this is mostly set in '42 and that helps a lot. If you've never read Kerr, please start with "Berlin Noir" but if you have and liked that, you'll like this.

A comparative oasis in time for Bernie Gunther By Blue in Washington One of the better Bernie Gunther books, mostly set in the mid-WWII period as the German military juggernaut has been blunted and the endgame is increasingly visible to most Europeans. Ex-Berlin copper Gunther is wearing at least two professional hats in this story--member of the SD and investigator for the German War Crimes Commission. Whatever his official title and duties (and they aren't altogether clear), his image as a free-booting detective has earned him an unwanted relationship with Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Minister of Truth and Propaganda. Goebbels wants help in tying down the services (in more ways than one) of a young actress. The assignment will bring a lot of pleasure and some amount of pain to Gunther. It will also send him on the road to Yugoslavia and Switzerland where big trouble awaits.I really liked this episode of the Gunther series as it has a terrific plot, great characters, snappy/sassy dialogue and explores some more exotic aspects of WWII. Author Phillip Kerr navigates the historic period and the portrays principal players of the time with a sure hand to detail and real credibility in presenting the action as human drama as opposed to simple political and military action. The novel is an entertaining read from page one and does fine as a stand alone story for any reader who hasn't sampled the series previously. This book will certainly gather some new fans for Bernie Gunther.Engrossing, entertaining and historically very credible. Recommended.

By Jim Napier, mystery & crime fiction reviewer The tenth in the impressive Bernie Gunther series, The Lady From Zagreb features the former Berlin cop who finds himself one of the many who now serve Nazi masters, and who constantly strive to walk the narrow (and dangerous) path between following outrageous orders while maintaining some vestige of personal integrity. In his latest outing Gunther does both, in the process alternating between solving more than one murder yet adding to the death toll himself when it proves necessary. The tale begins in 1956, on the French Riviera. Gunther recalls the events of the mid-nineteen forties, and his relationship with a devastatingly beautiful Croatian actress named Dalia Dresner, with whom he’d had a brief but intense relationship at the time. The story soon returns to Berlin during the same era, just after the infamous butcher Richard Heyrich had been killed by Czech patriots, for which the Nazis were taking horrific reprisals. In the midst of this turmoil the Germans, of all people, have arranged an international crime conference and its organizer, General Arthur Nebe, has tapped Gunther to be their keynote speaker. He’s been ordered to give a talk on a well-known case in which he ran to earth a notorious strangler. He’s been ordered to give a talk on a well-known case in which he ran to earth a notorious strangler. Gunther does not miss the irony of focusing on a lone killer’s actions in the face of the much more significant atrocities being perpetrated at that very moment by his Nazi masters. Adding to this macabre piece of political theatre, the conference is taking place at Wannsee, the very site where the Nazis had recently met to determine the fate of Germany’s – indeed Europe’s – Jewish population.Bernie is drawn into an intrigue involving Josef Goebbels, the Minister of Truth and Propaganda, and a film actress Dahlia Dresner. She’d been a star in Germany, and besotted with her, Goebbels wants her to return from Zurich to make a film for him. The problem is, Dahlia isn’t interested. He dispatches Gunther to Switzerland with Carte Blanche to persuade her otherwise, but fearing that he might, like so many before him, fail to return, he arranges a hostage who remains behind.Learning that Bernie is headed for Switzerland, General Walter Schellenberg “asks” (a word that has a special connotation in Nazi Germany) him to deliver to drive a new Mercedes-Benz roadster to Zurich, a gift for Paul Meyer-Schwertenbach, a Swiss policeman. It seems that, despite their famous neutrality, the Swiss and the Germans are involved in some sort of arrangement, and Gunther figures the roadster is to sweeten the deal.Bernie’s involvement in the machinations of high-ranking Nazis is growing by the minute, before it has ended he will find himself in very strange company, searching Yugoslavia for a Catholic priest or a Slavic war criminal – he’s not sure which – trying to convince shadowy interrogators that he’s not a high-ranking Nazi officer, and trying to avoid the Swiss police who want to question him over some sudden and unexplained deaths. It will require all of Gunther’s wits to survive, let along succeed in his several missions. As the tale moves toward it’s conclusion it returns to the Riviera in 1956, where Gunther is reunited with someone from the events of the forties, to a conclusion that fits perfectly with the jaded plotline and leaves the reader wanting more.As we’ve come to expect, Philip Kerr’s latest, though nominally a work of fiction, is based solidly and uncompromisingly on fact. The major characters are all drawn from the events of the day, and run the gamut from Germans to Swiss to Slavs to Americans. As a result, the reader is left with a clear indication of the events and personalities of the time. And in a bonus at the end, Kerr describes the postwar fate of many of the real-life figures in the story.Peppered with dark humour and dialogue fueled by Bernie Gunther’s insolence, the reader constantly wonders just how far he can – or will – go before he crosses the line and prompts his Nazi masters to be rid of him. Philip Kerr has done the nigh impossible: given readers an admirable figure who is more than a little flawed, and setting his actions against a background of the brutalities of the Third Reich and all the other horrors of war. It is a superb example of Nazi Noir, the narrative and dialogue echoing the glib, cynical interplay we have come to admire in the great period noir classics of the 1940s. Kerr effortlessly weaves a complex tale that moves from the corridors of the Nazi hierarchy, where everything is black or white, to the morally ambiguous arena of ordinary people on the fringes of power, simply trying desperately to stay alive, and where the real trick is figuring out who is which. As Gunther says, "Evil doesn’t come wearing evening dress and speaking with a foreign accent. It doesn’t have a scar on its face and a sinister smile. It rarely if ever owns a castle with a laboratory in the attic, and it doesn’t have joined-up eyebrows and gap teeth. The fact is, it’s easy to recognize an evil man when you see him: he looks just like you or me.”The Lady From Zagreb is, hands down, the best thing I’ve read in many months – if not longer.__________Since 2005 Jim Napier's reviews and interviews have appeared in several Canadian newspapers and on such websites as Spinetingler, The Rap Sheet, Shots Magazine, Crime Time, Reviewing The Evidence, January magazine, the Montreal Review of Books, the Ottawa Review of Books, and Amazon.com, as well as on his own award-winning crime fiction site, Deadly Diversions. Dead Zone is an inventive and exciting thriller set during the Second World War. It takes as its starting point, a detail from Antony Beevor’s Berlin, in which he describes how a strangely mixed band of deserters surrendered in Poland to the advancing Soviet forces. The novel develops this in an imaginative and suspenseful fashion, following the story of the band through to their betrayal to and capture by the Soviet secret police. The police chief reveals the hitherto concealed backgrounds of each individual before they are taken off to HQ for punishment. The last chapter provides a major metaphysical twist that requires the reader to reconsider everything s/he has read before, and in the process to grapple with the underlying themes. At this deeper level, the novel problematizes attitudes towards crime and punishment, sin and atonement, and debates these themes in the light of Dostoevsky’s two most famous novels, both of which are intertextualised in Dead Zone. The result is emphatically not feel-good; but it is exciting and thought-provoking.

War attracts psychopaths and those who are not psychopaths, but forced to participate anyway, face the prospect of developing psycopathy in the process. Either that or escape. Dead Zone describes this choice as a dilemma by turning our natural avoidance of evil into a question of what it means to be good. The main character is an officer whose moral and ethical grounds are being heavily tried by circumstances and thoroughly examined by the author. While the circumstance that a war is going on is no reason for giving up one's humanitarian senses, and that gruesome deeds and war atrocities offer plenty of reasons for running in the opposite direction, no clue is offered as to what to do instead, or why. Making love makes sense only for people who are capable of making sense of love. For what purpose then, other than self gratification, do we want to be good? This is the problem that looms large within the twilight zones of the the main character's mind, and the conclusion is only logical. Fyodor Dostoevsky would not agree.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Well written and intelligent fantasy By Madeline "The Diplomat" is a well written and interesting fantasy book that reads almost as two books with two fully completed main story arcs, each with an exciting climax. The first half deals with the main character's initial quest in a far kingdom and the second half deals with the consequences of that quest. Now, a book centered around a diplomat doesn't necessarily scream exciting action with life and death consequences. But this book admirably ramps up plausible scenarios into quite a thrilling plotline full of lots of political intrigue, familial betrayal, spying etc.. Also, Rema (main character Diplomat) is genuinely witty and manipulative in a way that is shown instead of told. We're told Rema's great at her job, but then also see her masterfully controlling situations where she initially appears to be at a disadvantage. The dialogue specifically had several instances where I was frankly pleasantly surprised. It takes a very skilled and intelligent writer to be able to write characters who are genuinely compelling wordsmiths, and I think French largely succeeded. Now I did find the love interest to be a bit annoying at first. I thought there was a bit too much drama and desperation towards the beginning than there needed to be. Though French does do a good job at giving a reasonable explanation for the behavior. However, I thought the back half of the book was better in achieving a stronger emotional arc with the characters. In summary, "The Diplomat" is worth the money and time it takes to read it. It's fun, well written and much more substantial than a lot of its peers.

The Danoshans need help in a war they are involved in, and the Empeeror wants their loyalty. Arriving in Danosha, Rema discovers a very poor country, and a very dysfunctional court. Further, Princess Elise has no desire to marry the Emperor. She does have lush curves and a forceful voice which appeal to Rema! The Diplomat is filled with schemes and plots, and many very colorful characters. In this, her debut novel, French writes with wit and warmth. "That idiot is more useless than an aphrodisiac in a monastery". "Big city." he said, "And it's hot as hell!" "You ought to know." With a length of 313 pages, French has plenty of room to fully tell her story and to develop her characters. This is an amazing debut novel from a fine writer.

Both Rama and Elise are strong willed women and but heads often before admitting their attraction to each other. Rama's devotion to her Emperer almost costs her everything but in the end she relizes the truth of the matter and comes to her senses.

Clearly a novice writer, but one with great potential By Laura Though there are some errors in this book that are distracting it was a very quick and enjoyable read. It's clear the writer is a novice, but one that has great potential. For a free book I can't complain! I've read some HORRIBLE books by young indie authors but this is by far one of the best I've come across. Unfortunately, so many poorly written books are available now because self publishing and independent writing is much easier thanks to technology. That's why detailed and helpful reviews are important. Despite the spelling and grammar errors this book kept my attention. One other reviewer complained about the use of "Anyways". That, I didn't have a problem with - this is a young adult novel, and young adults use very poor grammar and commonly use "anyways" as an accepted word. That I felt was just the author identifying with the audience and being age appropriate with how her main characters talk. It's more so the sentence fluency, structure and spelling errors that tend to bother me - which wasn't THAT big of a problem here. Though the Colton relationship was annoying, as others have said, it's very typical for teenagers and young adults to act like they were and be that immature. The fact that the relationship annoyed me means that it was well developed - at least it made me FEEL something. I even shed a few tears for the main character at one point. I connected with many of the characters in the book and was rooting for them at the end.Despite the lack of writing experience this author may have, she was able to tell a great story in a way that kept me coming back for more. Grammar skills are easy to learn - great story telling is not. Her character and story development was well done and she has me anxiously waiting for the next book in the series. That, for a young self published author, is a huge accomplishment. With a good editor this author could produce five star novels.

While I will say that the grammar issues were bothersome at times, they were not, as one reviewer claims, enough to rate the book a 1. To be honest, I hope anyone who reads that review realizes that the reviewer did not even bother to finish the novel. The grammar errors were present, but not so glaring as to derail the story. The author is young, her bio clearly states she is a college student (and one studying biology, not English) and since this is her first offering, I think it is a pretty solid one. The constant switching between past and present tense bothered me quite a bit, but I am an English teacher, and this is a grammar issue I am constantly fighting. I also think the author needs to work a bit less on telling portions of the story and showing more of it. She relies a bit much on pop culture references rather than her powers of description. She also could improve her word choice a bit more. I got the sense she was purposely avoiding using traditional curse words and replacing them with words like "crap," and "butt load," I think in an attempt to be less offensive. They come off as equally crude, but again, I think this is a sign of a young writer who just needs more experience and a good editor. I think that is what some poor reviews of this book seem to be forgetting: professionally published novels have editors who are paid decent (and sometimes amazing) money to make sure their novelists don't look like immature writers. They do all the grammar moping up and yet, it is rare I read a commercially printed work that does not contain typos and grammar mistakes, so cut this book some slack. As for the story itself, I think the author knows her target audience: fans of Twilight. Coming from me, that is a bit of an insult as I do not think Stephanie Meyers is talented in the least. However, unlike Twilight, there was actually action and Ryanne was likeable. Granted, it was a bit annoying that every guy was drawn to her and yet she seemed completely clueless to their attraction. Even girls who don't get a lot of attention can eventually pick up on hints, especially when every guy she meets is sending those hints out in some way. I also found myself wondering how a character who seemed so unsure of guys was constantly sitting on their laps. It just seemed odd that she sat on everyone's laps rather than in a chair or on the floor. Again, these are minor issues and I hope that in the rest of the series she develops the characters a bit more. Hoyt is developing Ryanne as a character, although right now several of the other main characters appear a bit flat and static. I'm assuming she will develop them more as the series continues. Also unlike Twilight, I feel like Hoyt has real potential as a writer. I wanted to finish the novel and I am often harsh on books. While I usually power through even if I don't like the book that much (Twilight), I have been known to stop when I find the plot insipid or the characters completely unlikeable (The Corrections). I wanted to know how this one ended. I also want to buy the next installment in this series and look forward to reading it. I hope Ms. Hoyt gets enough interest in her books and sends her works to professional publishers. I think she has a real shot. With some work this book could rival Twilight in its success, especially since Hoyt already surpasses Meyers in her story telling ability.

I started the book today and couldn't put it down and finished this evening. I couldn't stop reading it and am waiting anxiously for the next one to come out. It is a great start for a new author.

It's December 1900, and Berylda Jones is heading home to Bathurst for Christmas. Tragically, 'home' is where she and her beloved sister, Greta, live in terror, under the control of their sadistic Uncle Alec.

But Berylda has a plan, borne out of desperation, to free herself and Greta from Alec for good - if she can only find the courage to execute it.

Then, on New Year's Eve, just as Alec tightens his grip on the sisters, a stranger arrives at their gate - Ben Wilberry, a botanist in search of a particular native wildflower, with his friend, the artist Cosmo Thompson.

Ben is oblivious to what depravity lies beyond this threshold and what follows is a journey that will take him and Berylda, and Greta and Cosmo, out to the old gold rush town of Hill End in search of a means to cure evil and a solution to what seems an impossible situation.

Against the tumultuous backdrop of Australian Federation and the coming of the Women's Vote, Paper Daisies is a story of what it means to find moral courage, of a crime that must be committed to see justice done and a sweet love that flourishes against the odds.

By Jools Paper Daisies by Kim KellySince the tragic separate deaths of their parents some years earlier, Berylda Jones and her younger sister Greta have been living in their family home under the guardianship of their tyrannical Uncle Alec who has always treated them very badly.Because the girls were still minors, Uncle Alec laid claim to the estate and all of the assets along with being charged with the responsibility of the care and education of the two sisters. He ruled with an iron fist and made their once perfect lives a misery, depriving them of any and all social activities or entertainments. He was cruel and abusive in many ways, both emotionally and physically. Both of the girls would conspire to get away from him just as soon as they could. Berylda, being the eldest, was first to leave home and go on to university to study medicine. Her plan was that she would study very hard for her medical exams and get herself set up so that she could come for her sister. It is the end of the year of 1900 and Berylda is travelling home for Christmas after having completed her exams for entry to medicine. She is so excited and can't wait to see her sister and tell her of the plans that she has hatched to free her sister and herself from the clutches of their cruel and sadistic uncle...she only hopes that she has the courage to follow them through.Since being back at their home, Berylda has come to realize just how desperate her sister's situation has become during her absence, and is fearful of not being able to carry out her plans, because her new understanding of the circumstances have made her realize the situation has become even more dire.Berylda was getting desperate to put her plans together as quickly as she could as her uncle's temper began to escalate. Then, on New Years Eve, just as things appeared to be taking a turn for the worst, fate seems to have intervened when a stranger arrives at their doorstep, and Berylda finds herself infused with renewed hope as her plans suddenly take on a more positive shape. She can see their dreams of a better future becoming more and more possible. The stranger is a visiting botanist in search of an elusive wildflower he believes might be growing on their property. If Berylda can set some plans into action before this stranger disappears as easily as he appeared, then it is quite possible that he might hold the key to their freedom. Here begins another story as we follow the progress of Berylda's plans and how she goes about executing them. This was a thoroughly enjoyable read which kept up a steady pace of intrigue and ire making it a real page turner. There were also moments of sheer poetry and beauty, as Kim Kelly's detailed observations of the surrounding bushland and its terrain, managed to transport the reader to that place and time. Most enjoyable for me, (as a gardener) were the detailed and accurate descriptions of the Australian native bush and its flowers, described in all their glory from the perspective of the botanist's keen eye...I could easily envisage the picture and almost smell that beautiful Australian bush scent of eucalyptus and tea trees and various gum trees.Kim Kelly sure knows how to tell a great story, and this is one I would have no qualms about recommending 4★s

She's done all the exams she needs to do to be able to start and is heading home for the holidays. She dreads going there as it means she'll have to be under the same roof as her uncle Alec. Alec has Berylda and her sister Greta in his power. He's in charge of everything and has the authority to make all the decisions. Unfortunately he's creepy and mean. Berylda can escape in her studies, but it means she has to leave her sister behind with a psychopath. It's something she keeps struggling with, because she doesn't want to do that. When she meets botanist Ben Wilberry and invites him and his travel companion to spend New Year's Eve with them Berylda sees a great opportunity. She asks Ben to accompany her and her sister to a Chinese doctor who has miraculously cured a man who had cancer. Ben and his friend Cosmo are traveling with the sisters. Ben wants to find rare daisies and he's excited about the trip. Not only because of the flowers, but also because it gives him the chance to spend time with Berylda. Only Berylda finds herself in an impossible situation and she only sees one solution... Paper Daisies is a beautiful story about a woman who wants to have the freedom to do what she likes. She wants to be able to study and she also thinks it's unfair that an evil man has so much control over her and her sister simply because they are women and they can't have access to their own money. Berylda is smart, she's really smart, and she comes up with a plan, but it's something that will destroy her inside if it will ever be carried out. Ben is such a sweet man. He has a good heart and he's loving and caring. He's awkward around women, but for Berylda he's doing his very best. He wants her to like him and hopes they will have a future together. Berylda doesn't want to depend on a man and she doesn't want to fall in love. Ben is a good man, but will she see it? I couldn't wait to find out. I loved this story, it's got a wonderful setting, a little bit of mystery, great main characters and a lot of fantastic descriptions. Kim Kelly has done her research so well. I was transported to a different time and it was like I could see the whole story, it felt like I was there. I think authors who are able to write like that have an amazing gift. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

By Brenda Telford Berylda Jones was a medical student at the University of Sydney; on completion of her exams she was due to head back home to Bathurst for the Christmas break and the celebrations at the end of 1900. But instead of feeling joy at going home, she was feeling a mixture of sickness and horror. She had no choice but to go home though, as her sister Greta was there; the beloved sister who hadn’t been able to escape the clutches of their cruel and barbaric Uncle Alec. She dreaded to think what poor Greta had been going through…But her determination and anger at the situation had reached new heights and she was going to remove both Greta and herself from Uncle Alec forever, if it was the last thing she did. Having lost both their parents at a tender age, they found themselves in the care of Uncle Alec and his wife Aunt Libby (their mother’s sister) – moved from the only home they had known in Katoomba to Bathurst. But then Aunt Libby had been struck down by disease and died – never did they anticipate the depraved ways of their Uncle.Ben Wilberry was a botanist who was grieving deeply over the loss of a loved one – after a falling out with his father he took leave from his position in Melbourne and travelled west from Sydney, out through the mountains in search of a paper daisy while accompanied by his best friend and artist Cosmo Thompson. The day that Ben wandered up to the fence line of a property in Bathurst, having spotted a particularly delightful flower, was a day that would change his life forever. For Berylda the arrival of Ben literally on her doorstep would have a profound impact as well. When Berylda organised for Greta and herself to be accompanied by both Ben and Cosmo on a buggy ride where they would picnic then arrive in Hill End fully chaperoned, she knew Uncle Alec would do his best to stop them. But she won as she knew she would. Her reason to visit Hill End she told no-one – her plan was in motion…I thoroughly enjoyed Paper Daisies by Aussie author Kim Kelly. Deeply entrenched in Australian Federation with the lead up to women being given a vote, this heart wrenching but wonderful novel is told with compassion and depth. Narrated by both Berylda and Ben the gradual blending of their stories is beautifully done. The Author Note at the end of the book explains how the author came to write Paper Daisies, and is very interesting. Kim Kelly’s story telling abilities are astounding – this historical fiction novel set in the early 1900s is her best yet in my opinion, and I’ve loved them all. I have no hesitation in recommending Paper Daisies highly. With thanks to the author and Pan MacMillan for my copy to read and review.

Excerpt from Roman Life in the Days of Cicero: Sketches Drawn From His Letters and SpeechesThis book does not claim to be a life of Cicero or a history of the last days of the Roman Republic. Still less does it pretend to come into comparison with such a work as Bekker's Callus, in which on a slender thread of narrative is hung a vast amount of facts relating to the social life of the Romans. I have tried to group round the central figure of Cicero various sketches of men and manners, and so to give my readers some idea of what life actually was in Rome, and the provinces of Rome, during the first six decades - to speak roughly - of the first century B.C.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Roman Life in the Days of Cereo By mikeo olivier A good overview of Roman Life and the intrigue, murder, and plunder associated with political life. A world where accountability was relative. A good over view of Cicero's life and his accomplishments, recommended highly. The writing is a little old fashion, not much passion, and intrigue as you would get from a "modern" overview. Nonetheless if you are interested in the highlights', and major events without the drama, this has it.

Makayla was one of my 3rd grade students last year and it is just a joy to see her accomplishment in writing such a amazing book! This book encourages all of us to recognize that there are learning differences and that despite these differences, people can still be successful! This book is a MUST for teachers, students, parents, and especially children with Dyslexia!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Makayla Rules ! By Amazon Customer Having MA's in both Early Chilhood Ed. And "Special Education,"I bring more than just a subjective perspective to reviewing this book, which I found to be outstanding. It feels like things Makayla might share with her clearly understanding and respectful parents, using language that seems authentic. Scattered through the story are surpringly insightful nuggets, that made me smile. Her self-confidence and acknowledgement of emotional wounds she has dealt with, make her a fine model for young (& other) folks to keep in mind. I gave two of my dear friends that teach Special Ed in primary and elementary grades copies of it, and took great pride in being related to the author, as well as the joy of a lifelong teacher getting to share a wonderful new tool with other educators.

Three great books that definitely improve the writing process By mbarstow Write Better, Faster - Following the advice in this book has helped me increase my writing speed. The information about the Pomodoro Method alone helped me to triple my writing speed. The book mentions that many writers swear by this method, but I had never heard of it before. If you follow no other advice in this book, at least follow the Pomodoro Method. The author's advice about tracking your progress was also helpful. The 8-Minute Writing Habit - This book has a lot of helpful tips for building a good habit of writing consistently. My favorite takeaway is the suggestion of writing for just 8 minutes. I've always thought that if I can't due a full 25 minute Pomodoro, it was a waste of time to even write. By just doing even the tiniest bit of writing (8 minutes), it keeps me motivated to continue because I'm still seeing progress. Definitely recommend to anyone struggling to continue/finish their novel.Dictate Your Book - I had never considered dictating a book. I can type fairly fast, and I've never really experienced any pain in my hands/wrists. When I read Write Better, Faster, I thought the part about dictating her book was interesting. Dictate Your Book gives you the necessary information (software, setups for desk and mobile, equipment, and exercises) for writing a book by dictation. I'd like to point out that anyone using OS X Yosemite should definitely try the dictation that comes with operating system. You don't even need to buy a fancy microphone - just use your iPhone headphones with mic (only works on certain macs - I have a mac mini). It's very accurate and seems to get better the more you use it without having to train it. I'm not faster with dictation yet because I'm just learning the correct way to speak and call for commands, but I think it will eventually become my preferred way to write beats and first drafts.

In particular, I found the 8-minute Writing Habit particularly helpful, as it really helps debunk the notion that you need to have huge amounts of time to work. I've recommended it to a lot of writers who claim they dont have time to write.I already dictate, so Dictate Your Book didn't tell me much I didn't know. But I need to upgrade my equipment so I appreciate seeing options available. I did, however, like seeing what steps she takes to dictate while walking, since I don't do that.Last, her information in Write Better, Faster reinforced a lot of what I already do, but as I said, I enjoy reading what others do as their process. In all, I think the information presented far outweighs the rather modest cost for the bundle.

All were well written, without formatting, grammar, or typo mistakes, so no worries there. The messages came across fairly clearly. I could only give 4 stars for the bundle, because I felt the middle book (Dictate Your Book) was a dud.== == Book 1I liked the 8 Minute Writing Habit book because it had three sections of generally useful material. The first section is on overcoming five kinds of writer block, the second section is nine strategies that pro authors use to write consistently, and the third section is an "8 minutes x 8 days" process for exploring and improving your writing habits.I thought the book did a really nice job of providing a framework for novice writers to explore and experiment with their writing processes) to find out if they could improve them. The 8 minutes a day sizing kept the daily investments in the "game" small, so that they were easy to achieve, yet big enough to provide useful feedback. Also there was a really good Additional Resources section at the end of the book that contained about a dozen references to links on her website, other people's websites, and to books on related topics. I thought that section was well done too.The book would probably be useful to nonfiction writers, but I think the processes were mostly aimed at fiction writers. I would easily recommend the book to any fiction writer who wanted to improve or explore their writing habits for increased productivity.== == Book 2I didn't much like the Dictate Your Book book, because it seemed short and lightweight to me, without much practical or useful information in it. Not that it was filled with pure fluff (it was not), but just filled with lightweight material. Both of the other two books in this box set were far superior, in my view. The author spends some justifying the use of dictation, then first lists the various pieces of equipment that she uses – Dragon NaturallySpeaking, with mentions of a few microphones, adapters, and stands. Oddly enough, she doesn't mention noise cancelling microphones, which are a popular topic (and recommended) in the speech computing / dictation forums on the Internet. The rest of the book is a fairly simplistic commentary on how to use Dragon, with a final section on how dictation might affect your writing process (she says it doesn't, really, except for adding speed to the places in your process where you can use dictation).I've used Dragon versions for at least a decade (the early versions were terrible), which is why I think I have enough perspective on voice dictation to say that the material in this book seems fairly lightweight to me. The Dragon manuals do a much better job than this book as far as Dragon is concerned.I suppose I might recommend this book to people who knew absolutely nothing at all about dictation, as a kind of lightweight introduction to how you might use it. But if you already know that you want to use dictation, Dragon is the only game in town, so there is no other route to go except to buy the software and follow their very nice training procedures. I think everyone can be successful with dictating these days--the software and hardware technologies are amazingly good.I would further recommend getting the individual Pro version of Dragon, since it can do transcription from MP3 files and advanced scripting as well. I used to purchase the cheap versions, but always ended up regretting it. So now I just stay on the upgrade cycle for the Pro version, and have been very happy with that path for many years.== == Book 3I liked the Write Better, Faster book, for several reasons. The main topic of the book is the author's journey of tracking her progress toward achieving high daily / weekly / monthly word production rates and counts. The daemons she fought along the way were the usual ones of life – schedules, health, relationships, responsibilities, daily stuff, job money bills stuff – plus all the struggles of writing. In particular, her included diary wrestles with editing, proofreading, and publishing her drafts (of which she had many). She starts out focused on her writing speed (rate of generating words), stamina (number of hours spent writing), and her book production process (editing, revising, proofreading, publishing). But life gets in the way (especially freelancing ups/downs), and she plays whack-a-mole for the tracking period. As soon as she focuses on one thing, most of the other things fall apart. In the end, she doesn't reach the lofty goal of 100K words she set for herself, because the goal is no longer important to her (gee, that statement sounds like a big character development in a story). She quits freelancing and stops focusing on writing speed, because she can see it as "a tiny part of making a business of writing." Instead, she learns to collaborate and outsource with other people to lighten her load, so she can concentrate on the more meaningful things in life (for her) – writing that she likes, and relationships, friends, family, health, and creating more "space" in her life by saying no to a pile of the old things and behaviors.I thought it was an interesting, real-life story of someone who wrestled with goals and life, and who developed as a person and changed course as her personal limits were reached. If it was my book, I would try to make the book (and story) better by trying to extract and highlight more lessons from the diary part. I found that although there were a pile of daily ideas and goals and writing statistics in the diary, that changed day after day, I couldn't really see the story beats in the story, or what progress was being made in the numbers that were the basis of the story. A graph or two of expected productivity vs actual productivity, with commentary of reasons why, lessons learned, and adjustments made for the future would have added more meaning to the story, I think.I would recommend this book to almost anyone (even non-writers) for the life story that it tells.

Review

"This book compels educators to reexamine, reimagine and revise the ways in which we perceive African American children and others who are perpetually underserved in schools across the United States. A thought-provoking, accessible, poignant, and moral call to all of us – educators, parents, researchers, policymakers, and politicians―this book shepherds us into posing an essential question in all the work we do: And How are the Children? This book educates as it enlightens!" ― H. Richard Milner IV, Helen Faison Professor of Urban Education, University of Pittsburgh
