In Roaring Twenties Los Angeles, Angevin Rozanov is a lonely nineteen year-old, born into a dysfunctional family of witches. Her hideous mother, Solange, zapped a love spell on the head of the Los Angeles Mafia and now manages his speakeasy. Angevin’s 142 year-old gypsy grandmother, Dima, claims to be the bastard granddaughter of Catherine the Great, once Empress of All the Russias in the 1700s. Dima brews bathtub gin and whiskey with enough bewitchment to control her clients. Angevin dresses in rags, her hair in tangles around her face. She works in her family’s bootlegging business and pedals the illegal liquor door-to-door. Then one day, Angevin sees a handsome young man dancing at a speakeasy and falls in love. Like a butterfly, Angevin slowly emerges from her shell and secretly develops the witchcraft she was born with. Angevin will soon discover that magic has a way of playing the cruelest of tricks. She will learn a hard lesson that coming from a family of witches is a dark inheritance. Belinda Vasquez Garcia won a New Mexico / Arizona Book Awards for Best Historical Fiction and a Books into Movies Award for her New Mexico Witch Series.

By Trenton Jansen I have decided to write this review because this book does not currently have one and it really deserves one. Have you ever read a book that you could guess what was going to happen for the whole rest of the book and you were not even half the way through it? This book is definitely not one of those. I had no idea what was going to happen next and several times I put down the book to say "What the ..." to myself. In this book, every main character is very strange and most likely insane. However, despite this (or maybe because of it) the book was extremely well written and there was never a time when I cringed at a spelling or grammar error (very different than many of the books on unlimited) and at no time was I lost (despite the craziness). I would liken this book to Gene Wolfe's The Wizard Knight except I had more fun with this book. I very much look forward to a squeal.

By Old Guy This book needs a whole new tribe of adjectives to describe it. I read it on the suggestion of a student and I was surprised, impressed and completely delighted. It portends great things for the future of literature. The best part is that the author is young and prolific. I can only add, "WOW."

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. DISAPPOINTED **(2 STARS)** By Anne Normally this is the type of book that I would want to curl up in front of the fire and read over an evening or two but this seemed like a novella to me and I didn’t enjoy reading it. The writing failed to elicit the empathy that I should have felt for Angevin since she was treated so terribly by her mother and grandmother that always leads her to trouble because she is looking for the love she never received at home which always leads to trouble. Not only did I think it was too short but I also found the writing to be tedious. I know that this is the beginning of a series but the cliffhanger at then end was another thing I disliked I know it's the authors hope that readers will be interested enough to read the next one but I don’t like this one enough to wait for the next book to see if is any better and if I had read it last year or even the first half of this year I certainly wouldn’t want to try to remember the happenings of a short-story that I read 200+ books ago.I love stories about witchcraft, with or without a dysfunctional family in it and I was hoping that I would like this as much The Catalain Book of Secrets which had a similar storyline and has everything that this story lacked.**2/5 STARS: I want to thank the author for providing me a copy of this book via GoodReads Read IT & Reap forum in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine.**

Save your money and look somewhere else for help or guidance. This book is basically very Generic and seems to me cut and paste. Not at all an e-learning resource to built a business. No solid information on where to start. I have no idea who is giving this book 2/3/4/5 stars.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. The Heart of Things By Zack Davisson "Kokoro" is a difficult word to translate from Japanese to English. Heart, Spirit, Way of Being...it is all of these things. Rather than attempt a direct translation, Lafcadio Hearn offers a selection of stories focusing on Japanese inner life, so that by the end you will understand kokoro. The stories follow Hearn's particular interests of Japanese folklore and the vanishing culture of which he found himself a part in post-Meji Japan. Each story is a slice of life focusing on Japanese character, morals and feelings. This is what the Japanese people care about, what they think is important, what is inside. The selected tales are non-judgmental and non-orientalist. This is no attempt to explain or highlight the "strange" Japanese, but merely a record and an illumination, in the best sense of the term. The collected stories:"At a Railway Station""The Genius of Japanese Civilization""A Street Singer""From a Traveling Diary""The Nun of the Temple of Amida""After the War""Haru""A Glimpse of Tendencies""By Force of Karma""A Conservative""In the Twilight of the Gods""The Idea of Pre-Exsistance""In Cholera Time""Some Thoughts about Ancestor Worship""Kimiko"

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A Fluent Translation of Unspoken Worldviews By Crazy Fox Not to be confused with Natsume Soseki's novel by the same title, Lafcadio Hearn's "Kokoro" is a magnificent collection of essays, vignettes, memoirs, and meditations on Japan in the 1890's. Very much a product of the mid-Meiji period, these masterfully-written little literary pieces are nonetheless timeless. Each piece is quite different from the rest, and yet almost all of them manage to start from everyday incidents or obvious observations and gradually spiral inwards to some deeply moving and startling insight into Japanese attitudes, values, and worldviews; more than once this seemingly methodless method allows Hearn to share with the reader certain common opinions and normal spiritual orientations held by average Japanese folks--the kinds of things usually taken for granted and so unarticulated, hence least amenable to documentation and scholarship (especially of the time, but even today). And Hearn does all this with an unpretentious erudition and an understated and balanced sympathy for his subject that, along with his literary flair for wonderfully clear and flowing prose, places his writings here in a category far above the rest. With him we can find none of the unintentional strains of condescension and orientalism so typical of folklore and religious anthropology, for while he's looking with the surprised gaze of the outsider with one eye, his other eye is that of the insider feeling very much at home where he is. The resulting view is visionary--but in subdued and shadowy tones.Appendix on an Appendix: in addition to the fifteen excellent essays forming the main body of "Kokoro", there's an extensive appendix featuring Hearn's translations of three popular folk ballads: "The Ballad of Shuntoku-Maru", "The Ballad of Oguri Hangwan" and "The Ballad of O-Shichi, the Daughter of the Yaoya". These are fascinating on a number of levels. They provide a tantalizingly fleeting glimpse of plebian drama, remarkable in its very lack of remarkableness. There's a certain sociological angle, as the versions of these oral ballads collected and translated by Hearn are those recited by mountain outcastes in the area of today's Shimane Prefecture. Religiously the first two ballads are key in understanding popular attitudes concerning pilgrimage in Japan--the first demonstrating a creepy (almost voodoo) edge in Kannon faith at Kiyomizudera Temple, the second delightfully exaggerating the rejuvenating benefits of Kumano and its sacred hot springs. Meanwhile, the third ballad is a straightforwardly melodramatic retelling of a true story better known to us today in a more refined and literary version as found in the novelist Saikaku's "Five Women Who Loved Love" of 1686.

Good starting point for the second exam By Aegiscrash Been through this book and the one before it (70-346), and going to take the 347 exam as soon as I complete the 346 exam. I studied both books one after together so I could get everything as a complete package, and because I actually manage a hybrid ex2010 / o365 environment so the info comes in handy. This book will provide you with a excellent foundation for the exam. The information in the book is laid out in a nice logical manner with plenty of screen shots. The author does a good job of explaining the material in a easy way. You should not have a problem following the book. That being said, before you take the exam you should have some hands on experience to help with the concepts and I always recommend some additional exam prep like exam practice exams to ensure that you have everything down. Write down and really know your powershell commands.

The book helps but will not be a one-stop resource for passing the test By Jon Wong I bought this book directly from the Microsoft website right when it was released (I think with a 50% off code or something). I'm going to be talking about how outdated the content is, how valuable it is to passing the test, and what sucks about this book. The one thing better about this book than the 70-346 version is that it was not immediately outdated when I got the book. I think the content in this book will remain fairly stable (at least for a while longer than the 70-346 content). Microsoft is still hammering out how they want to deploy Office 365 to customers, but when it comes to administration, I believe they're mostly done deciding the processes. If you want up-to-date content, this book (as of today) will work out just fine. When it comes to passing the test, this book is a must-have I think. Not because the book is amazing, but because there are no better options. You can try to watch videos online (CBT Nuggets) or pore over the Microsoft technical documentation, but you'll either get too little or too much information. This book has been abridged to give you a pretty good overview of what you need to pass the test. It will also give you the technical documentation links that you need to read in order to understand and pass the test.So what sucks about this book? There are are a ton of mistakes. I'm too lazy to make a list, but I'll give you one example. On page 141 of the book, you'll see an example question with four possible answers. For some reason, two of the answers are duplicate word-for-word. If you check the answers in the back, only one of those answers are right. There are a ton of errors and typos throughout the book. The worst part is when you read information that is straight out contradictory. Make sure you have the internet handy so that you can verify the information through the Microsoft technet articles. This book is helpful but not perfect. If you use this book as your only resource, I doubt that you will pass your test. You will need to have additional experience actually managing an Office 365 environment, or at least purchase a practice test from a service like MeasureUp.

If I'm not pulled into the story, I'm done by page 50. I finished this entire book and still wanted more. When I realized that there are other books to follow I was excited! I want to be brought into this writers world. You can tell the story comes from inside knowledge of the inner workings of our Government and Military. A must read... you won't be sorry that you started this book. But you will be asking for more when you finish...

A love unrequited and wishes unfulfilled... Phoebe Sheffield has been nursing tender feelings for David Traymore, a bitter younger man who views her as a sister. On a misty evening, under the influence of absinthe, she wishes for a suitor like him, only mature enough to appreciate her as a woman. Be careful what you wish for... For a few magic moments, her wish seems to come true when she meets someone she mistakes for a vision of David from the future. But after the most passionate encounter of her life, she learns her dream lover is actually David’s worst enemy: Lord Solebury, the man who sired him then abandoned his mother. A choice between love and friendship... Though Phoebe should hate Solebury, she’s wildly attracted to him—and moved when he opens up about the regrets of his youth. But how can she justify betraying David, the friend who needs her most, to be with the man who is the bane of his existence? Fans of Sylvia Day, Christi Caldwell and Julia Quinn will love this historical romance novella set in Regency England and Portugal. Wish I Might is the prequel to Jennifer Malin's full-length time-travel romance As You Wish. Book 1 in the Three Wishes series--the books can also be read as standalone works.

Wish I Might (Three Wishes Book 1), by Jennifer Malin

About the Author Jennifer Malin inherited double copies of the bookworm gene from a mom who reads voraciously and a dad who once spent his downtime writing in the crane he operated. Her first two novels, As You Wish, a time travel, and Eternally Yours, a ghost romance, were originally published by Jove (Penguin Group USA). After that, Jen's love for Jane Austen led to several works set in Regency England--one from Leisure Books and three from Zebra. In recent years, her fascination with archaeology inspired The Five-Day Dig, a contemporary mystery/romance set near Pompeii; Seventh Sanctuary, a steamy novella of ancient Sumeria; and Templum, a time travel featuring a modern heroine and an ancient-Roman hero. Her new novella Wish I Might is the prequel to As You Wish. Next up is the third installment in the series. Jen and her husband, Martin, an Aussie ex-pat, live outside of Philadelphia but travel to see ancient ruins and Formula 1 races as often as they can. She's an art enthusiast, a fan of film, and the proud aunt of three amazing nephews. Find descriptions and sample chapters for all of her books at jenmalin.com.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Really enjoyed By Carrie G. I won this book from Goodreads First Reads.Wish I Might is a historical romance novella about Phoebe who at 26 has a crush on David who is only 21 and not only a bit immature but thinks of Phoebe as a sister. Phoebe after having a bit of alcohol makes a wish in a fountain for a more mature version of David that she could marry. Little does she realize that the stranger that appears to her that seems to be her wish come true is actually David’s father Harold whom David despises. This book is one that once I started on I just couldn’t put down until I finished. A most awkward love triangle to say the least kept the pages turning to find out how this all played out. Definitely a quick fun read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A well-written, touching regency romance with a very satisfying conclusion. By Teester i first read as i wish and loved it, so i've been looking forward to this one for a while. great regency romance from jen malin, phoebe was a very sympathetic character and i was rooting for her to the end. a sensual love story, but certainly not over the top, and it follows through with As I Wish's time travel/paranormal elements. this author has an impressive grasp of the regency time period, and the book itself is very well written.also, really loved this because it was a prequel to As I Wish. i fell in love with David from As I Wish, and this story explains what happened to him when he was a younger man. very satisfying!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wish I Might (Three Wishes Book 1) ... By Cphe This is a quick read being novella length. It is certainly well written and well edited. I couldn't really feel a lot of chemistry between the two main characters Harold and Phoebe. I felt this was mainly due to Phoebe's character, at times her actions were not those of a twenty six year old woman and I just felt ambivalent regarding her. For this reader it was Harold, Lord Solebury who carried the story, he had learnt from past mistakes and showed more depth of character.Overall, a quick, enjoyable and light read for the genre.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A bit slow By Lone Star Proud I didn't see much purpose in this book as it did almost nothing to move the overall storyline forward. I found myself speed reading through whole sections and that is never a good sign. Needs to pick up the pace in future editions.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Sacrifice, Destiny, Courage. By Amazon Customer Just finished this 3rd installment today.A story of death of friends, human catastrophe, lost battles, and future hope. A story of manipulation and destiny continues.Spoiler - We get a glimpse of where the source of Aruns Armies will come from. But that will be a story behind another book in the series.Much more background in this 3rd book. The fun days of youth are behind us. The hard facts of sacrifice and war are upon us.Like other comments on reviews, I would recommend reading the first two books first. The author did take the time to supply a few pages of the story so far from the first two books.Look forward to the 4th installment. Giving this book a solid 4 star review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I have been enjoying this series from the beginning, ... By tpatt I have been enjoying this series from the beginning, and book 3 continues the trend. The author is working with a vast landscape, so he has a lot of room to work with this story line that I would envision will continue for an additional number of volumes. This volume wraps up a few loose ends from the previous stories, setting up a villain that will likely appear in future volumes, and exposing both the strengths and weaknesses of the hero. I certainly will keep investing in the future editions, and I hope the author can keep advancing the story.

A mostly true, though somewhat embroidered, but highly entertaining, epic saga of a pair of ill-matched 18th Century English teenagers. Mary Bateman,14, is a survivor bought from an orphanage by a notorious, but hilariously awful Elizabeth Sully madam of a London brothel for paedophiles. Feisty Mary reluctantly becomes a whore-thief, is caught and sentenced to death for theft - but commuted to a lesser punishment - deportation. The countless men in her life include a gypsy onion-seller, Jose, a rent-boy fop, Jamie-boy - her great love - her 'sea-husband', Archie and sturdy, 17 year old naïve farm-boy, George Guest. Readied to hang for pig-rustling but reprieved at the very last minute, he is transported to Botany Bay, Australia. Jamie-boy, George and Mary are crammed into cruel convict transporters, he in the First Fleet, she on ‘The Whore-ship', Lady Juliana. They endure pathos, privation, cruelty, perversion, rape, murder, jealousy, tragedy, heady adventure, deadly dangers. And there is sex – lots of it! Some quite bizarre. But there is, too, much comedy - even farce - for is not that the flip-side of tragedy? Their absorbing saga teems with an array of stunning characters: whores, madams, paedophiles, psychopaths, highwaymen, gentry, even royalty, ex-slaves turned bushrangers, bigoted judges, dodgy lawyers, thugs (often female), ‘sea-husbands’, castrati, aborigines, sadistic gaolers, saints and sinners, criminals galore - and, if that were not enough, the supernatural. With deadly foes hell-bent on their ruin, the teens and their staunch friends are finally thrown together by fate but en route - via Tenerife, Rio, Cape Verde, Cape Town - they must engage in epic battles to simply survive in a faraway and pitiless new world. One will prosper…one will die horribly...the other...?

A Strumpet of London: and a pig pincher, by Mr Rob Brow

About the Author Robert Brow (Rob) is an Edinburgh Scot. In 1949 he, his sister and parents sailed to Melbourne, Australia, though family connections with Victoria go back as far as the 1840s. He attended the Royal High School of Edinburgh, alma mater of Sir Walter Scott, Alexander Graham Bell, Lachlan Macquarie, an early Governor of N.S.W. He started teaching at an all (wayward) girls school and left not because of the teenagers but he couldn't stand some of the more conservative teachers! Life as a thespian appealed and he performed in such plays as 'Under Milkwood', 'Romeo and Juliet' and as the lead in 'Tea and Sympathy' and even appeared in Stanley Kramer's movie, "On The Beach". Television began in Australia and Rob was intrigued - starting at the bottom pushing scenery he soon turned his hand as a cameraman, floor manager and screen writer of drama where he met Charlton Heston, Anne Baxter before becoming TV and Radio produce /writer in several leading advertising agencies in Melbourne, Sydney and London, including JWT, Grey and Sharp-McManus working with such luminaries as Ronnies Corbett and Barker, Derek Nimmo, Maurice Denham, Jack Thompson, Pamela Stevenson. He even caught himself advising the great Jimmy Connors how to serve at tennis! As Program Manager of a TV station he also wrote and produced comedy skits and documentaries. Returning to Oz Rob became a director/producer/writer of film/TV production and started his own company in Melbourne and moved into documentary work culminating in "The Country Editor", "The Fighting Gunditzmara", "Other Mothers" and "Keeping Up With The Jones", which he co-wrote, directed and produced. All were seen in cinemas and on TV. As a result he was commissioned to produce documentaries and TV Programmes on various social subjects, of wrongs to be righted. Since moving to Queensland with his family in 1987 he has written numerous documentary and movie scripts and was asked to lecture on film writing to adult classes. Learning of his wife’s rambunctious convict family history he was fascinated by the story of her (multi) grand parents, Mary and George and has spent years researching and traveling to the places which touched their lives. Residing for long periods in London and the U.S Nola and Rob 'retired' to Brisbane, Australia, have two beloved children, Justin and Natasha, seven adored grandchildren, a rickety old Polly Dog and two neurotic felines.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. great tale! By Marlene S. As a transplanted Australian, I have always been interested in the history of our beautiful country.Mr. Brow has crafted a story of epic proportions. He has done an enormous amount of research for this book and weaves into this research what could reasonably have been. Through letters and reports, he gives a fair accounting of what happened to the convict fleets from the time they were arrested to the time they landed on this far away island. This book alternates between sadness and absolute hilarity. The main story centers around a young girl reduced to prostitution to save herself and her two young siblings from starvation and life in an orphanage in London, after losing their mother to madness. It also tells the tale of a young lad who is arrested for stealing back his own family’s livestock. Things in London in the 1700s were as dismal as could be. Stealing a loaf of bread or a piece of fruit was all it took to end up in Newgate, there to die in jail or by hanging or to be transported to the ends of the earth. The young prostitute Mary crosses paths with many others who will end up being transported to colonize Australia. All have, and will endure, more than we can imagine today. The transport fleets were inhumane and you are in no doubt of the atrocities that the author tells. On the ship that Mary is transported on conditions, while not great, were much better than the others endured. For a teenaged girl, Mary has strength of will that is more than most grown men. While you know that much of the story is embellished by the author to enhance this book, the base tale is documented and believable.Mr. Brow’s descriptions of what the convict saw as they travelled are so verdant as to imagine you were there, seeing them for the first time as these tortured souls were. Rio, Cape Town, how exciting and yet at the same time, frightening they would have been. The reporting of the sounds and sights that were discovered in Australia today might be taken for granted, to this group of individuals, it would have been terrifying. Think of hearing a Kookaburra for the first time! This is a large book but once you get into the story, the pages fly by and before you know it, you are finished but craving more.Highly recommended!!! This is available through Amazon and Kindle so grab your copy today! Also, as this might be a great Public Library addition, keep checking with your local to see if they have it in stock or might get it in for you.

The first in a stunning fantasy quartet from K J Taylor.

Good reading By LAS Reviewer Drachengott, monster size dragon, master of all and giver of powers.Syn, a female dragon called into being by the human servants of Drachengott, is considered a traitor by her own kind. She seeks out the only one who has the power to destroy Drachegott and set her free. Her problem is whether this man will help the dragon who killed his brother.Rutger falls in love with Swanhild, a stranger he finds in the nearby forest. Swanhild teaches him magic and they set out to protect the world from the dragons and dragon helpers. This is a well written story which draws an image of dragons controlling the world with only small pockets of human rebels who try to survive without technology or dragon magic. Defense weapons are crossbows and swords which are useless against the scale protected dragons. The hint of what the future holds for Rutger and Swanhild is shrouded in mystery, enough to make me read on to find out whether my thoughts were right, or the author had developed a clever plot twist.Everyday events such as earning money for food and lodging came across as interesting and believable and helped the story forward. Sometimes a plot can forget that the characters have to do normal things to survive and this can spoil the flow of the story. This is not one of those books. Everything flows along very nicely.Wind provided me with shiver down the spine moments, soft romantic scenes, smiles as other characters were duped by Rutger and Swanhild and all the time there was the question, will they or won’t they? All in all a good read especially as I love dragons.originally posted at long and short reviews

By Anne This book is much shorter than what I usually read and while it is listed as adult fiction I feel that some mature middle school age children could read and definitely the YA readers. While I enjoyed this I feel that I would have enjoyed it more if I had read all the installments at once for these reasons; I read so much that it is hard for me to remember to look for the new installment next month and secondly I prefer longer, meatier books.Syn, is a young female dragon that seems to be experiencing some “coming of age issues”. When the human servants of The Drachengott, who the dragons believe are traitors. call her to be a servant she seeks to avoid this fate. To circumvent this she tries to find the only one who can destroy the Drachengott, but there is a reason that he may not help her.I thought it a well written story about small pockets human rebels trying to avoid being enslaved by the dragons that control their world. They must survive without technology or the he magic that dragons possess. Their weapons are crossbows and sword. They face the problems that everyone else face; how to earn enough money to survive, a place to live and food. The story flows smoothly and it is an easy read.3.75/5 STARS**I want to thank the author and/or publisher for providing a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review; all opinions are mine.**

I received this book free in exchange for a honest review.I give this book 3.5 stars. This book was actually pretty good. It had some entertaining ideas, such as following a young female dragon almost as a coming of age story. Good framework, that would have benefited greatly from some fleshing out and more story development. The book could have been twice as long easily. But still was a fun quick read for an evening.
