Historical characters, close calls, and good-natured fun abound in this light-hearted romp through the West with adventures worthy of Don Quixote. Here are two of the most improbable mountain men ever to trap and explore the Rocky Mountains. Shakespeare is a former actor, an older man of gargantuan proportion. His sidekick, Silk, is a rail-thin teenager with all the brains that Shakespeare lacks. They get into flabbergasting scrapes from wrestling bears, to falling in love with off-limits women in Santa Fe, a Crow woman warrior, and the porcelain-faced daughter of a trader. Silk and Shakespeare are fictional, but historical characters abound in this light-hearted romp through the west. Chief among these is Antelope Jim Beckwourth, the mulatto son of a Virginia plantation owner who became a warrior chief of the Crow Indians. Beckwourth's lover, Pine Leaf, was a legendary and very real woman-warrior of the Crows. This unlikely foursome gets into jams with dreaded enemies of the Crow and the Blackfeet. That's to be expected of characters who, like Don Quixote, dream of "enchantments, quarrels, battles, challenges, wounds, wooings, loves, tempests, and other impossible follies." Reviews "Blevins 'Silk and Shakespeare' brims with good-natured fun!" -- Publisher's Weekly “Win Blevins displays an antic imagination, not only in mingling actual and invented characters, but in melding gritty action-adventure with metaphysical musings.” — Dale Wasserman, author of Man of La Mancha “Win Blevins is the best writer in America.” --John Milius, screenwriter of ‘Apocalypse Now’ “I haven’t had so much fun reading a book about the West in years.” —George Roy Hill, director of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

The Misadventures of Silk and Shakespeare (American Dreamers), by Win Blevins

About the Author I came naturally by my yen to wander far places, physical, imaginary, and spiritual... -"Win Blevins" Win Blevins, of Cherokee, Irish and Welsh descent, is from a family that was on the move, always west. Win's childhood was spent roaming, his dad a railroad man. Win went to school in St. Louis, and the family spent summers in little towns along the tracks of the railroads. He listened to the whistles blow at night and wanted to go wherever the trains went.Seldom has a young man been in more of a hurry. Using scholarships, Win ran through a succession of colleges, receiving his master's degree, with honors, in English from Columbia University. He taught at Purdue University and Franklin College, then received a fellowship to attend USC. Win became a newspaperman - a music, theater, and film critic for both major Los Angeles papers. In 1972 he took the big leap-he quit his job to write out his passions-exploring and learning wild places-full time. His greatest passion of all has been to set the stories of these places, their people and animals, colors and smells, into books.Win climbed mountains for ten years. A fluke blizzard caught him on a mountaintop and froze his feet, an end to climbing mountains, but not to exploring them. He's rafted rivers in the west, particularly the Snake and the San Juan, and was briefly a river guide. His love of the great Yellowstone River gave him a fine appreciation for the people who first loved these wild places. Along the way, Win lost the use of his legs and learned to sail, deciding a boat was a good place for a man without legs. He regained the use of his legs, and maintains his love of the open seas. His first book, "Give Your Heart to the Hawks", is still in print after thirty years. Other works include "Stone Song", a novel about Crazy Horse, for which he won the 1996 Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award and the 1996 Spur Award. He's written 15 books, including a Dictionary of the American West, numerous screenplays and magazine articles. He lives quietly in the canyon country of Utah. His passions grow with time-his wife Meredith, the center of his life, their five kids and grandkids. Classical music, baseball, roaming red rock mesas in the astonishing countryside, playing music He considers himself blessed to be one of the people creating new stories about the west, and is proud to call himself a member of the world's oldest profession-storyteller.

How do you go on when everything you love has been lost? Aengus might have become the Painter who would save his people, but that hope was crushed when his village was massacred, leaving him the only survivor of the slaughter. Grief-stricken, he threw himself off a cliff, only to awaken horribly injured and emotionally hollow, a color-blind painter who would never again wield the magical power of the color pots. Now a navigator for the pirate Timbertoe, who fished his broken body from the water, Aengus wreaks a savage revenge upon the Wolfhounds who destroyed his people and his life. When cornered by his enemies one night, he is forced to plead for sanctuary at the home of a reclusive sorceress. There he meets Rose, a mysterious green-eyed beauty who has long walked in his dreams. But the fury of the Wolf lashes out at them, and to save Rose, to save himself, Aengus desperately reaches once more for the gift of painting locked in his damaged brain--and for the strength of heart to accept his fate.

This one's rather grimmer - for obvious reasons, since the first book ended with his adoptive home being destroyed. Some straightforward adventure (well, technically it's mostly revenge, and contains many of the grimmest scenes in the book), and some more metaphysical, as the repercussions from Aengus' painting in the first book shake out. A pity about Lord Flame - I was thinking Jorem's worship was a twisted shadow, but it looks (so far) like it's what he wants. Aengus is dealing with a lot of physical changes, from the events at the end of the last book - though he seems to be the only one obsessed with his looks, everyone else he deals with takes one long look and moves on to more important matters. And the colorblindness also seems variable - that is, it doesn't affect anything he does _except_ painting, and it should (his clothes, judging loot, heck, it should affect recognizing ship flags!). Problems he'd thought dealt with weren't, and come back to haunt him; problems he'd never imagined rise up and attack him (sometimes literally). But he manages to navigate matters pretty well - I had no idea what was going on with the guildmaster, though, that one wasn't well seeded for me. And he gets himself...into a terrible spot, with another metaphysical task almost-sort-of done. Hopefully both of them will survive the mess, with minimal damage, and the repercussions from this one will be less long-term destructive than the first task. Probably not, though, there's still another book to go. Which I don't _have_ yet, darn it - requested it from ER, but there's still half a month to go (and if I don't get it there, even longer to wait). Definitely want to read the next book. There were a few scan errors in this book, too - not OCR here, it was a matter of returns being inserted into the middle of paragraphs. Nothing major, but occasionally disconcerting. Received this book from Early Reviewers on Librarything.com.

Enough was revealed to allow the reader to feel comfortable with following the story By Foundations I did not read the first book in this series, and I felt the story stood on its own merits. Enough was revealed to allow the reader to feel comfortable with following the story. I very much appreciated the moral tone of the book. While real life has plenty of moral ambiguity, I prefer a magical world to have a clearer focus. Needless to say I put Game of Thrones aside after the first book based on this preference!I found the writing interesting, the characters lively, and the amount of suspense just right. I would recommend The Giant of Inishkerry to any people I know that enjoy this genre.

After reading the first in this series I was eager to be able to continue reading about Aengus and to see what had become of him. If possible, this book was even better than the first! Her gift for descriptive writing pulls you into the world she has created. I eagerly await the third book in this series although, in truth, I don't want the story to end. Note: I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

By Lynn Pool (Ellesea) I've read everything that Tiffany Snow has published, so picking up a copy of her newest book shouldn't have triggered a feeling of apprehension, but it did. In His Shadow, the first book in The Tangled Ivy Trilogy missed the mark for me, but did leave me with a glimmer of hope that the remaining books in the series would be better. After reading the second part of this trilogy and with a huge sigh of relief, I can say that I really enjoyed Shadow Of a Doubt. There is no easing into this second installment of The Tangled Ivy Trilogy as the pace of plot it pretty fast moving the whole of the duration of the book. Once you begin, you're sucked in with barely a chance to draw a breath until you've reached the ending. And what an ending it is! The suspense is what keeps my interest and me turning the pages. Unfortunately, the protagonist's relationship barely registers with me.It is strange that I find the supporting characters infinitely more interesting than the main ones. I'm grateful for Logan and Agent Scott Lane's presence. I have warmed more to Devon this time around though. His nationality is still confusing to me, so I read him as an American citizen. As Devon opens up more to Ivy, there is a glimpse of a charming man, who shows that he has a caring and compassionate side, although I'm not convinced Ivy is worthy of such thoughtfulness. As a heroine, I'm struggling to empathise with her as she displays characteristics I don't find pleasing in people generally. All in all, I'm really looking forward to how this is all going to end and can't wait to find out the conclusion. I'm guessing Tiffany is saving the best until last and hopefully the protagonists will finally strike a positive chord with me too.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Better By Sparkymom I admit I didn't love the first book in this series. The Kathleen Turner series is still my ultimate book addiction, but like this author's Blank Slate, the first book in this series fell flat for me because Ivy was really hard to connect with. She was so malleable and manipulated. I had a hard time rating that book, but decided to give it a benefit of the doubt 4 stars. Since the first title was In His Shadow, and Ivy definitely was in Devon's shadow, I was hoping the author meant for us to see Ivy how she was and wait for her to grow in future books. Thankfully, she does in this story. The writing was back to the Tiffany Snow style that pulled so many people into Kathleen Turner's world. Ivy remains in Devon's shadow, but begins to understand more about herself and the detrimental patterns in her life. Devon also changes and reveals more of his true personality. I began to really root for them as a couple despite all the people and obstacles against them. I enjoyed the emotional ups and downs, the chemistry between the couple, and the way Ivy begins to find her inner strength. After the gut clenching ending, I can't wait to see what Devon does next!

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. More please! By Shel D. More, immediately! Love the story line and all the twists and turns. If I can't have anymore of Kathleen, please give me a long lasting series with Ivy

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not the typical running book By John Bird I’ve read several books about running, but Justin Slater’s Blood, Sweat, and Shame is one of a kind.Slater, for me, is easy to relate to. He says that his entire “list of personal attributes” that qualifies him to complete an ultra marathon is this: “Really, really compulsive tendencies. Usually about food.”The author is always funny and honest—sometimes too honest. And he never has a superior tone. His main goal, it seems, (besides sharing his experience) is to make fun of himself:“At no point during your reading do I expect you to feel a twinge of anything approaching inspiration.”Slater does a fair amount of taking jabs at the running culture in general. As a runner myself, I agree with all his observations and criticisms, even when they apply to me.The author’s main story is how he went from being out of shape and overweight to completing a 50 mile run, and what he learned from it. In the end, he concludes that “running doesn’t matter,” that it can be a selfish pursuit, but that it can also be good therapy. If you like it, do it, but don’t try to justify it or expect others to be impressed by it.Slater seems to go out of his way to make you not like him, but he comes across as very likable—a normal guy who would be fun to hang out with. One of the things I liked most about his book is how much he shows his appreciation for his wife, whom he always describes as supporting and encouraging. During the second half of Slater’s 50 mile run, she shows up on a bike to ride along with him. Slater writes:“I could not have been happier if Jesus himself was riding that bike. She was smiling and happy and the exact opposite of everything I was feeling. She also brought soda and chips…”What more could a guy ask for?My only criticism is that Slater’s language is unnecessarily harsh; I had to keep my kindle out of the reach of my kids while I was reading his book. But other than that, he is a good writer and story-teller. Whether he keeps running or not is up to him, but I do hope that he keeps writing.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Hilarious, shocking, and insightful By Mike Sometimes cringe inducing (e.g. the nipple story), often insightful, and consistently hilarious.I enjoyed myself thoroughly, but annoyed everyone around me by laughing and gasping out loud... constantly. Overall, though, besides just being funny, it's an inspiring and insightful look into obsession, self-worth, and relationships.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cringe-inducing is correct. Hilarious and definitely relatable for anyone ... By Amanda M. Cringe-inducing is correct. Hilarious and definitely relatable for anyone who has spent any amount of time running — even if you would never be caught dead running an ultra marathon!

It’s 1879 and seventeen-year-old Theodocia Hews is out of control. Her inventor father Orin Hews tried to raise her to be a proper lady, but Theo says and does whatever she wants. Since girls aren’t supposed to be inventors, she’s secretly building her own airship up on the roof of their house. When her father is attacked and his valuable invention is stolen, she sets out in her untested airship to get her father’s contraption back. She’d better hurry. Her father’s contract with his buyer expires in three days and without it they’re ruined. The airship lifts off but things get complicated when Theo finds an unintended passenger aboard. Henry Caracticus Thorne—the thief she’d spotted that morning making off with things in the market—is an altogether unsuitable companion. But he’s unlike anyone she’s ever met before, he’s willing to help, and he’s drop-dead gorgeous. As they soar through the sky in the close quarters of Theo’s airship, it’s not just the steam engine heating up. Theo has a hunch who took her father’s invention. Will she manage to catch the culprit before it’s too late? What did that strange lightning storm do to Theo and Henry? And will Theo give in to her heart and act on her growing feelings for Henry? The Adventures of Theodocia Hews is a humorous YA steampunk adventure and romance series set in 1879 Cincinnati in an alternate universe where the evil institution of slavery was abolished shortly after the United States was founded, the Civil War never happened, crazy inventions are commonplace, and steam power rules!

And after reading the description, I knew that I wanted to read it, so while I was at UtopYA Con, I picked up a copy of the book and got it signed by the author (and had a lovely conversation with her). I started reading it on my trip home. What I found inside the book was exactly as I had expected: a fiesty, impulsive young woman who prides herself on her inventions, especially her new aetherigible. She finds herself needing to use her untested invention to recover one of her father's inventions and her adventure begins. Through a series of upsets and obstacles, Theo continues moving forward, determined to get to the end of her quest. And quest this is. Although I would not call this book formulaic, it does follow quite nicely along a hero's quest path. I knew something would happen to Theo to keep her from her task, but the author did a great job of surprising at each twist and turn of the plot, including a rather intense scene aboard a train.Theo's character is somewhat stereotypical in that she's a strong-willed young woman who acts rather impulsively. But she never feels like a flat stereotype. The author brings Theo off the page fully fleshed out and with some fantastic lines of dialogue. I felt an instant connection with this character and want to find out more about her (very glad this is a series and I can indeed do so in future books!). And Theo's companion, Henry, is a rather enigmatic young man. As a reader, I found myself feeling about him much as Theo did, wanting to put faith and trust in him but never quite knowing if it was appropriate to do so. What was a lie and what was the truth. All in all, a great main character and "sidekick."The storyline and action moved forward nicely and it never felt like it was just plodding along (which some books with lengthy travel sequences can feel like). Each bit of the story moved either the plot or the characters along and it was hard to put the book down. I was rather sad when I got to the end of the book (especially as there were a fair number of pages left at the end so I wasn't expecting the story to end as soon as it did). I will definitely be getting the sequel as soon as it is available. The extra pages at the end include a short section from the next book (which I always skip because I can't stand reading a section from a book and not being able to continue with it!) as well as some historical notes about the geography and history used in the book. It was quite interesting to read about the historical connections to details in the story. My only complaint is that the book could use a proofreading (just a proofreading, not copy editing) as there were some typos (words left out, a misspelling, comma errors) that should have been caught. But they were not enough to take me out of my overall enjoyment of the book.

You need to read it. I would buy this book just because of the cover alone. It’s awesome. I absolutely love it. Theo looks as though she is the master of her own destiny standing tall in front of her wonderful invention. Female characters like her always intrigue me. After one look at the cover, I knew I needed to read this book. And, I’m so glad that I did. The story definitely matches the cover perfectly.Chapter one gets straight into it. I always know it’s going to be a good read when I get to the end of chapter one and think “Already? What?” When it shocks me that the first chapter is over, it means I just ate it up. This first chapter really sets the scene... from Theo's rooftop hideaway to the neighborhood she calls home to how she lives with her father, housekeeper and pup. Right from chapter one, I was swept into the story and wanted to know more.I love authors that can paint a clear visual of the world they are building. I could clearly envisage it all and couldn’t wait to start chapter two. I must admit that I don’t read a lot of steam punk. I like it, but I always tend to lean more toward fantasy or paranormal. I loved stepping into the steam punk land that Nooce has created. It was a refreshing change for my imagination to picture the engines, inventions, and the flying machine that Theo has put her heart and soul into building.Since I love reading young adult, I read a lot of first person novels. Nooce nailed the first person in Theo. It usually takes me several chapters to get settled into the mindset of the main character, but after only one chapter, I felt like I knew Theo. She’s an interesting character to live inside on her journey. She’s smart, confident, and most importantly for me, she doesn’t complain much. I hate characters that whinge internally. Not Theo. She sees a problem and marches straight up to it. No nonsense. She knows her strengths and uses them. Being privy to her inner thoughts, you can easily believe she's an inventor. I like how she solves the problems that face her along the way.Overall, a great little read.

Just the thought of building an airship and setting off on an adventure sounds so exhilarating. I love the personalities that Nooce Miller gave the main characters. Theo is a little spitfire who too often speaks her mind. She is rejected as an inventor, but she still pushes forward. Her travel companion Henry is a known thief, but you can tell through Nooce’s writing that there is so much more to him. Little bits of information about him are revealed throughout the story, which goes to show we should never judge a book by its cover. Together these two characters make a great team, but since they are both strong minded they butt heads often. The journey comes loaded with little surprises that would have me wondering, what in the world could happen next. It did start off a little slow, but once the story picked up it kept my interest till the end. This YA Steampunk novel is definitely worth the read.Rooftop Inventor is about a young female inventor ahead of her time. After Theodocia’s father was attacked and robbed she sets off on an adventure in the airship she had secretly built on her roof, to get the stolen item back before it is too late. To her surprise she finds a stowaway aboard as she lifts off. Now Theo and Henry race against time to catch up with the thieves and find themselves in a lot of trouble along the way. It seems like everything is working against them. Will Theo succeed?

It is an easy "read" that weaves a spell binding mystery - causing me two personal reactions. The first was thinking I had solved the mystery and then finding I had missed the solution on three more tries. The second was that wonderful shock that comes when confronted with an unexpected ending out of the blue! Perfect for gift giving at any time of the year!

By Amazon Customer I really enjoyed the portrait of the mysterious international businessman who lets his heart guide him around the world.Reading about sophisticated enjoyment and exploration of exotic locations gets middle-aged guys like me thoughtful about our place in the world. The hard-living but soft-hearted protagonist embodies a lifestyle that makes every decision a question about how the rest of his life will turn out.I definitely tried to guess how the action would be resolved - guessed wrong several times.

This is a mystery that captures and keeps one's attention. It is a quick read that can lead you to a wrongful conclusion. Read carefully. There is a mystery within this mystery: did the author intentionally mislead us or ???? I'll leave the decision to you. I'm looking forward to his next novel. Will we be mislead again? Overall impressed by this Anthology. CHBB and Sarah Davis Brandon always produces amazing works.Clockwork wings Lexi Ostrow- This story intrigued me from the beginning. Short and sweet, a tale that takes you through time with a fairy and a pair of humans. Love and a dire need to save the human and fairy kind alike. The exquisite layout and beautiful artwork sprinkled throughout is an added bonus. I loved the blend of fairies with steampunk technology. Very interesting. The worlds in each story were all well-built and unique, and I loved reading about the different contraptions and gadgets being used. I especially loved the palpable poignancy in Broken Wings and the vivid world details in The Others that packs a novel's worth of character building and concept into a short story. The Others, although it can stand alone, almost feels like the beginning of what would be a cool series with a tone that almost reminds me of Daughter of Smoke and Bone. If you love steampunk, or fantasy creatures, get this anthology. Even if you don't, I'd recommend it anyway because it's packed with coolness, fascinating detail, and characters that should be known.

By Love2read First, let me say that this is the first time I've ever read anything in the steampunk genre (never being entirely sure, to be honest, what steampunk even WAS), but since I was offered a complimentary copy for a beta read and honest opinion, I figured why not give something new a try? Well, now I find myself wondering what else I've been missing out on.These stories were so imaginative, so descriptive, I could easily envision what was happening as if I were watching some fantasy sci-fi movie with tiny fairies, mischievous brownies and oafish, evil orcs. And the movie would definitely be in color, because every last tale was so vivid! Whimsical in places, a little dark in others, even a hint of romance here and there...but always, unfailingly delightful. I truly enjoyed this anthology and have no doubt it will be a huge hit with fans of this unique genre. And by the way, yes, I'm a new fan. :)

Understanding Reading revolutionized reading research and theory when the first edition appeared in 1971 and continues to be a leader in the field. In the sixth edition of this classic text Smith’s purpose remains the same: to shed light on fundamental aspects of the complex human act of reading – linguistic, physiological, psychological, and social – and of what is involved in learning to read.

The text critically examines current theories, instructional practices, and controversies, covering a wide range of disciplines but always remains accessible. Careful attention is given to the ideological clash that continues between whole language and direct instruction and currently permeates every aspect of theory and research into reading and reading instruction. In every edition, including the present one, Smith has steadfastly resisted giving teachers a recipe for teaching reading, while aiming to help them make their own decisions, based on research about reading, which is accessible to anyone, and their experience and personal knowledge of their students, which only they possess. To aid readers in making up their own minds, each chapter concludes with a brief statement of "Issues."

Understanding Reading, Sixth Edition is matchless in integrating a wide range of topics relative to reading while, at the same time, being highly readable and user-friendly for instructors, students, and practitioners.

On Reading; Learning to Read; Comprehension and Much, Much More By BAvidReader Understanding Reading: A Psycholinguistic Analysis of Reading and Learning to Readby Frank Smith aims to educate the reader about the act of reading and learning to read.Parents and their children, teachers, lecturers, and readersconcerned about their reading technique, are all invited here.It may be viewed as the more comprehensive volume to Reading Without Nonsense[Smith, Frank. 2006. Fourth Edition. Teacher's College Press], another good book.Dr. Smith succeeds very well in creating a train of thought, employing logic and reasoning, yet keeping his pen `light' to his audience. On glancing through the reference list, the dimensions the author has considered become apparent. It includes amongst other -educational sciences, psychology, linguistics, writing and more ...Additionally, the references may provide clues to further investigations. The reader could expect to learn from the text -1. How we acquire knowledge of the world around us, when young?2. Why reading and learning to reading are considered to be natural acts.3. What is the difference between comprehension and knowledge?4. The role of information and experience.5. Meeting of minds - the writer, reader; and their respective conventions.6. The involvement of our eyes [visual factors] and brain [prior knowledge, non-visual factors] when we read.7. How best to employ our brain and memory in the act of reading.8. Single letter - vs. whole word - vs. meaning identification.9. The `Phonetics-first' [identify a word -> break up into 'sound-out' units -> comprehend word] - versus10. The `Look-say' method [identify groups of words (visual reading)-> comprehend thought units] of reading and learning to read.11. Politics, bickering and ... the educational system!12. On reading, writing and thinking. In summary, a well-researched exposition, worthy of your consideration!

Huey By Large Critic There are two seminal books on reading: (1) "The Psychology and Pedagogy of Reading" by E.B. Huey (1908); and (2) "Understanding Reading" by Frank Smith (1971). Smith's book, now in its 6th and final edition, combines different areas of study to provide an understanding of the proficient reader. To understand reading requires understanding how language works and how learning works. It requires knowing the role that short-term memory plays in reading and the visual processing limitations of the eye and brain. Smith has integrated concepts from a range of disciplines superbly. This book is a classic, and Smith's ideas and insights about reading will influence scholars and teachers for generations to come.

After Cadet Streeter sacrifices Buck’s reputation to safeguard his own, Buck escapes to his sister Thankful at Fort Grant, Arizona and meets an old rival, William Weldon. With the introduction of new characters and the return of familiar ones, Weary of Running made for an exciting read. The protagonist, Thankful, is the real highlight of the novel. She consistently makes very poor decisions but in the end, you can understand why she has made every last one of them. The story ranges from love and romance to questions of faith and morality. It does all this without being preachy and explores many angles of different aspects of life. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time.
