A Pedagogy of Questioning: Learner's Edition, by Mr. Gerardo Ivan Hannel

About the Author Gerardo Ivan Hannel grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, and went to Yale University and Northwestern University School of Law. He is a practicing attorney in Arizona. For 20 years, he has taught a workshop based on effective questioning, which is called "A Pedagogy of Questioning" (APOQ). Ivan's parents, Drs. Lee and Maria Hannel, were the original developers of the pedagogical approach focusing on questioning, basing their work off the earlier work of Dr. Reuven Feuerstein of Israel, a renown psychologist (Piaget called Dr. Feuerstein a "genius"). Ivan believes that when teachers learn the fundamental of questioning, focusing on creating a hierarchy of mental acts in the mind of students, the outcomes is a better understanding of the patterns inherent in content. Ivan also believes that it is very important to focus on creating participating so that all students benefit from questioning, not just the few who volunteer or those higher-level students who seem to enjoy questions. Ivan hopes his work will help your teaching and has received very positive reports from all over the world about APOQ.

I absolutely believe that the most important thing a teacher can do for students is model asking good questions, and using them to drive the learning.

It is a fast read and full of helpful, though-provoking points. We definitely need to be better at asking all stages of questions to our students to lead to deeper, more critical thinking. Teachers need to be trained in this area. I can't recommend this book enough.

Review "I used Dr. Greene's services when my son was in 11th grade when he got a low SAT score. We had signed on to another SAT class which wasn't helping. We decided to go for Dr. Greene's private tutoring. In a matter of weeks with Dr. Greene's system of powerhousing he was able to raise his score significantly. Dr. Greene is great with teenagers with an unassuming manor that puts them at ease all the while with the ability to say the right things to help them along to their goals. I highly recommend his services and his advice in marketing and educational services ."  - Jane L. (parent)"This useful handbook gives students of all ages and grades the tools necessary to succeed in all subject areas. Strategies for note taking, outlining, and studying are presented using examples that students can mirror in their own classwork. Dr. Greene is practical, knowledgeable, and uses common sense to help students organize themselves for life-long learning. I would recommend this handbook for my own clients, as well as those looking for quick advice that they can implement into their lives NOW!"Cheryl DiLanzo, M.S. Montgomery County Community College/ACE College Advising."If it sounds like he is a hero, indeed this is true. If you have children who need testing or subject matter help, Steve will step up with all his wisdom, heart, and soul. He's knowledgeable and understands the mindset of teenagers. The most amazing feat Steve did was to connect with our son's chemistry teacher. He went to the high school and figured out where the "learning gaps" in class and homework were. In our son's words, "He went out of his way to ensure success with a teacher and class I was struggling with. I'm a better person and student because of him." David Kale (parent)"Steve is a great help to my children when they have difficulties with math. He is always willing to fit them into his schedule and work around their other activities. His knowledge of math, ability to connect with children, and willingness to work around our busy schedules makes him the perfect choice for a tutor."Sandy S. (parent)"Steve has a wonderful ability to hone in on what the student's academic and emotional needs are, while helping to maximize their potential. He is incredibly patient and focused while working one-on-one and helping the student understand and learn the material. Steve is incredibly accepting of the craziness of teenagers' schedules and working around their schedules to fit in tutoring time. Our family is fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Steve."Andrea R. (parent)

By Gabriele This Guide is about reaching & fulfill your highest academic potential and this fact alone could be enough to end a very positive review. But, I'm not here to express only a bunch of planned words. So, about this ebook I want to compliment the author for the simplicity in exposing every ingredient to become a successful student.I admit that during my previous studies I struggled big time, but If I had the chance to read it before It would make all the difference. In fact the content is presented in a very clear format and, as the meaning of education is pulling something positive from someone else, it's a real educational tool to be read to every brilliant and, especially, soon-to-become brilliant students. If your "maximum education" starts from proven and practical knowledge, this ebook can be your best school-mate. Very good work!

First category, the original outbreak or shortly there after, we get to see patient zero, or at least the first several victims, and our faithful hero must navigate his way through by himself or with a group, zombies are a main character as a whole, and there is a lot of action. Second category, main focus is on a group of survivors and their interaction. There is always a bad guy or group of bad guys that the "heroes" must face against. The zombies themselves are more of a background character, something for the "heroes" to run away from or fight when they bad guys aren't around. The third category takes place after the zombie threat has been eradicated, or years after the main event. Most of the focus is on rebuilding society, or the last stand of the few who are left. This series falls comfortably into the first category (my favorite). The zombies are the alive, fast, and semi-intelligent/group consciousness variety, which I find more interesting than the slow and stupid (although if it ever happens for real, I'm team slow and stupid all the way!). The main protagonist is Jimmy, a naive guy in his early 20's who lives with his grandmother and has sort of floated through life, not really making an impact on anyone, and with no real goals of his own short of being left alone to read. The sickness, and eventual zombies, have forced him to wake up and fight for himself and others, bringing out the best in him. I think what I like about Jimmy most is he's still the sweet bumbling nerd we meet at the beginning, but is trying his best to figure things out. In other words, a real person, this is not one of those stories where the main protagonist discovers he is some kind of zombie killing superhero. The group Jimmy is traveling with is a good mix of odd and "normal" (a prostitute, survivalist, police officer, a baby, etc.). Episode 1 introduces us to the main characters and the first stage of the sickness; the pace really picks up in Episodes 2 & 3 once the zombies wake up and start heading west, attacking everyone along the way. Overall, while this isn't the best series I've ever read, it's certainly better than most. There's just something about it that makes me want to know what happens next, and why they're drawn west.

A story in fast forward full of pop-culture By Txfirefighter I was given a copy of this book to read an write an honest review.I guess with time and many books read one comes to appreciate a really good book. A story that can transport the mind to a new place and introduce the reader to new people. I also guess that over time my taste in fiction has become rather picky. If Dead Highways were one of the first stories I picked up when I was young then yes, I would have loved it. There are some good moments and I even laughed at the authors use of humor. However it could hardly pique my interest. This is not to say the author did a bad job; merely that this level of writing is somewhat elementary. (I like complex stories.)For starters the story is was to fast. Fast paced action is good but not on every page. I feel time needed to slow down or the reader is going to get burned out. This leads to another flaw. Lack of depth. This is with character, plot, setting or detail. There is good action and cool infected but I could not appriciate them because everything went by in a blur. The author describes scenes in a few sentences often with a pop-culture reference. When it reads "the scene reminds me of War of the Worlds" I immediately think of well, War of the Worlds, not Dead Highway. And this leads to another flaw. Pop-culture is way over used. Having the main character compare himself to Rick Grimes (Walking Dead hero) is unoriginal and a bit distasteful. This is a draw-back of writing a zombie (or zombie-esque) story where the characters already know what a zombie is. It seems the author wanted so bad to be the creator of The Walking Dead (or a character in the story) that he referenced it twelve times. Start fresh with your story and introduce it into a 'Walking Dead' free world. Numerous other pop-culture references filled the story and really threw me off so if this bothers you as well, stay away.*I think I'll mention that if you have not started The Walking Dead series/books and plan to then don't read Dead Highways as he gives away the ending of season two. Or hurry and finish so there is no shock and disappointment.*It might seem that I hated this book or that it's horrible; it isn't. The dialog is good. It's hard enough writing how people talk on a day-to-day basis. The quick witty converstaions and short sentences between the characters fit. It's also no easy task to start with an idea and see it through until finish. The author deserves credit for the completion. However a few more months of thought and more pages of brainstorming could have helped this story become something more.

I stumbled upon Dead Highways Episode 1 while doing a search for something new to read. Boy, I am so glad that I found it!The reader is drawn into the life of the lead character, Jimmy. We get a birds eye view of his neighborhood and its inhabitants. When something happens that drastically changes the world, Jimmy must learn to open up his small world and let other survivors in.The action really picks up in episodes 2 & 3. Jimmy and the other characters are put in dangerous situations where they must rely on each other. And the cliffhangers for episodes 2 & 3 are awesome. I, for one, cannot wait for episode 4 to be released!!!If you enjoy post-apocalyptic stories, you will enjoy this. I highly recommend this series!

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. A rollercoaster ride of romance, revenge, and Revolution By A. Woman Alice Roussillon is a surprising heroine considering this book was published way back in 1900. Living in the then French village of Vincennes, Alice is all for turning over the city to the Americans. She even helps sew an American flag and brashly climbs to the top of what serves as town hall to plant it.But then those pesky villains, the British army, come and take the city away from the fledgling American presence. Alice just keeps getting in deeper and deeper trouble. First she hides the flag and refuses to surrender it to the British commander. Then she shoots (but doesn't kill) a British officer (who strangely enough goes on to fall in love with her.) She helps her French foster father escape, wounding another British soldier with her sword, which she handles expertly by the way. Enough is enough and the commander finally imprisons Alice and threatens to execute her.Alice's American boyfriend flees to try and find help. He's chased by a band of Indians who want his scalp. He's captured, abused, and forced to go through the gauntlet, but he's able to get away and hook up with the legendary George Rogers Clark and his small band of men.Meanwhile, Alice is told that her boyfriend has been scalped. She attempts to flee her captives and in the course of events she's shot! But don't worry. Through an extreme set of circumstances she survives and is reunited with her boyfriend who still has all his hair.If there's one main nitpick it concerns the character of Father Beret, a Jesuit priest. One moment he's a kind old man trying to guide Alice to Catholicism. But when the situation calls for it, he's a strong defender with a good right punch who can also wield a sword with the best of them. Early in the book he receives a mysterious letter but we the reader never do get to learn what it says. It's obvious Beret has an interesting back story, but author Maurice Thompson never goes into it. A wasted opportunity if you ask me.Another missed opportunity is Alice's background. She was found as a child living with Indians and was placed in the care of a French family. At the very end of the book we're simply told that she finds out who her family is but we're not told how. How did she end up living with the Indians? What happened to her birth parents? Again, Thompson just drops the subject. One last thing: don't expect any politically correct language when it comes to the Native Americans in this book. Keep in mind the era when this book was written.

Historical fiction gives me a sense of the land and how the area started and has grown. It gives me a different perspective when I am there. This book was slow at the start, but soon became interesting.

It's got a great mix of mystery, the fantastic, and a splash of sci-fi. This final volume takes the story to a new level, and unlike a series like LOST, the mysterious threads aren't left frazzled and hanging, but come together in an epic climax. This has been quite an adventure, literally of biblical proportions. Highly recommended.

The third book of the Saga Of The Rah series finds beautiful boy-god, Rah, in Babylon, amongst the enemies of his master, Rush The Assassin. Rah, approaching the city on horseback, is taken into the Palace by Princess Ephtheta herself when her caravan discovers him just outside the gates, having fled his master once again. Delighted by his cat-like beauty, Princess Ephtheta adopts Rah, a new addition to her collection of exotic pets, and keeps him a secret from her father until a message from the Assassin himself demands his return. "Your darkest nightmare has yet to be dreamt. For I will take a bone from your body for each day you keep the boy from him, beginning with today. Then I will take what you love first and second: first, your daughter Ephtheta, and second, Babylon. All of the armies of Syria will not protect you. Return him, or face hell itself."

Hansen Just waiting for the next in this series, Rah the slave reincarnated into a god by the temple priests, and Rush the assassin and life set in an ancient time and place. The book reads like the old epic movies, cast of thousands, bigger than life characters, royal houses and intrigue. The times were brutal, or perhaps that is just the assassin, as he is war itself in my opinion. I read the prior 2 books before this and would not want to have missed any of this saga. The author has written well enough that this one can stand alone.

Eaza Fishman is a rising star within the Guard, the military branch of the Great Lake Alliance. But his renown can't protect his little sister Lydia from being arrested by the authorities when she breaks anti-prophesy laws, telling everyone about the "ghost" that has announced the arrival of a new messiah. His family now disgraced, Eaza is suspended from service and finds himself a pariah. He seeks the truth behind what haunts his sister and visits the forbidden Talis Dunes, where others claim to have seen the ghosts. There, a radiant being appears, telling him to rescue his sister and flee into the southern desert. His faith renewed, Eaza's task is daunting, fight the Guard's elite forces that now hold his sister and find a way to escape across the lakes into the drought-riven wastes. Meanwhile, just as Eaza's quest begins, a lone intelligence officer within the Guard uncovers a foreign plot involving holographic images, designed to reawaken religious fervor and create chaos throughout the strictly secular alliance. Are the ghosts real, or an illusion?

By Amazon Customer Although this is not the kind of book I typically pick up, there was something about the cover that drew me in. And boy, am I glad I did. This is a fascinating tale that keeps on generating its own energy and keeps you flipping the pages. I have almost never read a book in one day yet this one I did. I know it's a cliche to say that the characters jump off the pages but that was my experience. I really got lost in the story. Hats off to Peter Lalor. Looking forward to whatever he produces next.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. as I think this would make a great movie. By Jennifer Vinci I don't usually take the time to write a review, but this book's adventures has left a impact on my brain. Months later, after finishing the story, I am still think about it. The novel is well written with detailed descriptions that ignite the imagination. The fact that the author has taken a futuristic adventure and weaved spiritual depth into it while making it exciting and thought provoking is what makes me give this novel 5 stars. And you don't have to be a spiritual genius to understand the point. I hope the author considers writing it's screenplay, as I think this would make a great movie.

I really like it when science fiction and religion get together to create a story, and that's exactly what happens in this book. Being an environmentalist, I'm glad somebody has used global warming and the future need for fresh water as a backdrop in a post-apocalyptic story as well. The story starts with these weird Worm men, the guys on the cover, and then the whole messiah thing just builds the suspense, you worry about Lydia, and her big brother is a great hero. I think anyone who likes action adventure will like this book.

Colleges and universities have become increasingly costly, and, except for a handful of highly selective, elite institutions, unresponsive to twenty-first-century needs. But for the past few years, technology-fueled innovation has begun to transform higher education, introducing new ways to disseminate knowledge and better ways to learn-all at lower cost. In this impassioned account, Richard DeMillo tells the behind-the-scenes story of these pioneering efforts and offers a road map for transforming higher education. Building on his earlier book, Abelard to Apple, DeMillo argues that the current system of higher education is clearly unsustainable. Colleges and universities are in financial crisis. Tuition rises inexorably. Graduates of reputable schools often fail to learn basic skills, and many cannot find suitable jobs. Meanwhile, student-loan default rates have soared while the elite Ivy and near-Ivy schools seem remote and irrelevant. Where are the revolutionaries who can save higher education? DeMillo's heroes are a small band of innovators who are bringing the revolution in technology to colleges and universities. DeMillo chronicles, among other things, the invention of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) by professors at Stanford and MIT; Salman Khan's Khan Academy; the use of technology by struggling historically black colleges and universities to make learning more accessible; and the latest research on learning and the brain. He describes the revolution's goals and the entrenched hierarchical system it aims to overthrow; and he reframes the nature of the contract between society and its universities. The new institutions of a transformed higher education promise to demonstrate not only that education has value but also that it has values-virtues for the common good.

Revolution in Higher Education: How a Small Band of Innovators Will Make College Accessible and Affordable, by Richard A. DeMillo

Review "DeMillo makes the case for a real revolution in higher education, which has not changed its format and practices for centuries. Millions will benefit from this transformation" --Vint Cerf, one of the founding fathers of the Internet "Revolution in Higher Education is a thorough but readable look into the innovations and tough questions that are poised to alter the higher education landscape. DeMillo makes his case so effectively that when disruption comes, none of us will be able to say we were not warned." --Mitch Daniels, President of Purdue University, and former Governor of Indiana "The new social contract envisioned by Richard DeMillo in his insightful and arresting new book, Revolution in Higher Education, is one that must be achieved if we are to succeed as a nation. DeMillo makes a compelling argument for the notion that a small band of innovators could generate an entire symphony of outcomes that make higher education more accessible, more affordable, and ultimately more aligned with the growing demand for talent that is shaping our twenty-first-century economy and society." --Jamie Merisotis, President and CEO, Lumina Foundation

From the Author From Andrew Young's foreword:Abelard to Apple was an excuse for me to think long and hard about the failure of American colleges and universities. It is far easier to attack institutions than to look for reasons they are unable to solve their problems, or what they would do if they could. I was intrigued when I heard Rich was writing a book that would tell us what the future might look like. I was even more interested when I found out it might involve a new social contract to democratize education.

From the Back Cover Cover Image: A modern tower of technologically enabled education replaces an ivory tower in a revolution that engulfs colleges and universities around the world.  It soars over the ruins of the University of Harran in the modern Turkish city of Sanliurfa, whose 11,000 years of history make it the site of one of humanity's oldest settlements.

Farley, Ph.D. Dr. DeMillo's book provides a invaluable overview of the strengths, failures and future challenges faced by universities across the nation and around the world. His thoughtful analysis of factors such as tuition increases is useful even to a non-specialized audience, those desiring a well-researched and balanced account of costs incurred by colleges in 2015. Instead of a clinical report of metrics, though, Dr. DeMillo offers a hopeful view of programs and initiatives that encourage new approaches to teaching and skill acquisition in 21st Century life. Details about specific MOOCs and flipped classes are especially compelling.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. ... entirely by an advertising agent and refers to people like Salman Khan as the "heroes and martyrs of education" By Meig Ren The first chapter appears to have been written entirely by an advertising agent and refers to people like Salman Khan as the "heroes and martyrs of education". The author seems to worship "the innovators". The evidence produced seems fairly flaky, and the generally ecstatic tone doesn't inspire a lot of confidence - I constantly felt the urge to check the footnotes to see if the author's points could be supported. In fairness, the book gets better over time, and the author makes some good points, but the writing style is so atrocious that the book is unreadable.

It's 1792 and George Washington is President of the new American nation. The Ohio River beckons and Americans flatboat down the river to reach the Wabash county. Here the lives of pioneers, Piankeshaw Indians, and American soldiers meet in unforgiving conflict. In the spring of 1792, a small party of pioneers embark from Wheeling Virginia on a flatboat headed down the Ohio river. The trip takes several days. They reach a large island known as Diamond Island. There, they are ambushed by a Piankeshaw war party. Some of the adults are killed and the remainder are taken prisoner and force marched some forty miles north to the Piankeshaw village. Some prisoners are kept at the village. The others are turned north once again, including five year old Mary Griscom. At a sandstone cliff Mary slows the warriors progress and she is killed. Her death scream alerts a band of four hunters recently discharged from the U. S. Army at Post Vincennes. They are able to rescue the remaining prisoners but one of there number is killed. The bury their companion and Mary Griscom at the base of the cliff. They retreat to the base camp in the Wabash River on Coffee Island. They continued to hunt and trap along the Wabash with the help of those they rescued, Eventually, they successfully rescue the other survivors still being held at the village. Finally, after hunting and trapping and further clashes with the Piankeshaw warriors, they all journey up the Wabash to the old French town of Vincennes. From there they go their separate ways on the frontier.
