"ME and CHIEF" recounts the last 20 years of Sitting Bull’s life—as told by his horse, Blackie. Based on true historical events, this novel covers the years 1870-1890. During these years as Chief and Holy Man of the Lakota Sioux, Sitting Bull fought for, advised, counseled and represented his people, trying to enable them to live free on the northern plains as they had always done, all while the government declared them “hostiles” and sent military to round them up and contain them to living on designated reservations. Sitting Bull and Blackie were involved in the Battle on the Rosebud, present during Custer’s defeat, fled to Canada, surrendered to the U.S. military, took part in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West shows, and raised horses from his home on the Grand River in South Dakota until his untimely murder.

Thumbs-Up for "ME and CHIEF" By anonymous too "ME and CHIEF Sitting Bull" is a riveting, albeit sad, re-creation of the tragic final years of a Native American legend as well as the Great Lakota Nation, as told by a horse Sitting Bull owned—which made the perspective unique. There is also an underlying story of the Nokota horse breed which originated from Sitting Bull's horses, that, as a horse lover, I found interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading historical novels.

By Mary Clayton An interesting story line built around perhaps not the most admirable part of American history. The narrative is from the Native American view point and will cause the reader to stop, think and reconsider some of the actions and decisions made then and today. The history is well researched and is blended into the story. An enjoyable and enlightening read.

Best Ebook When Apples aren't Enough, by Tania Mouscardy-Johnson

Tania Mouscardy-Johnson’s book, When Apples aren’t Enough, takes a hard look at the many changes implemented in education over the past two decades by examining the detrimental effects mandates, such as standardized testing and test-based teacher evaluation, have had on children and American public education. Shrouded as a children’s book, Mouscardy-Johnson tells the story of Miss McCarthy, a teacher who is about to retire from her long journey as an educator as a result of the closing of her school. While she could possibly continue working as a sub in another building, Miss McCarthy sees the “writing on the wall” and believes that although she has loved teaching and has been enriched by her career, it is the time to step out of her role as teacher and to start working to save public education in America. Through the clever farewell visit of a former student, Chris, Miss McCarthy is able to “school” him about the hits education has taken from the policies implemented by the adoption of No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top. Naturally, Chris is outraged and shocked, admitting that he, like the general public, never realized the devastating impact these policies and other mandates were having on public education. The book also explores the importance of tenure, unions, and supporting public education. Tania Mouscardy-Johnson’s book is powerful in its message to teachers, parents, and students everywhere. The author remains positive and firmly believes that American public education will continue to “meet the needs of America’s children”. Ginger Calderaro- Valley Stream Teachers’ Association "...what’s currently happening in education is not about being the best teacher, or even a good one." "It’s about politics and very wealthy people in this country who are trying to privatize public education so that they can become even richer." “It truly is a heartbreak for those of us who believe in public education-especially those of us who have dedicated our lives to making a difference in the lives of children." "...even as parents and concerned individuals are becoming aware of what has been happening to our educational system and even with their voicing their opposition- especially with regard to what it is doing to our children emotionally, the testing movement is still going ahead at full speed under the pretext of 'fixing' public education." "People are forgetting that throughout history, schools have played a vital role in our society. As a matter of fact, that’s been a little bit of a double-edged sword for us. People look to schools as a venue to fix many social issues. Unfortunately, educators are not given the freedom nor the resources to do so, and IT’S THE CHILDREN WHO SUFFER! " ABOUT THE AUTHOR… Tania Mouscardy-Johnson P.D. Educational Administration M.A. Secondary English Education B.S. Secondary English Education/Business Communications Minor As a thirty year career educator who has enjoyed an outstanding and successful tenure at one of New York State’s highly acclaimed school districts, Tania Mouscardy-Johnson is committed to children and excellence in education. She has served as an educational consultant for New York State Education Department on numerous committees and was a member of the New York State Regents’ Standards Review Initiative, as well as the New York State Regents’ Common Core Review Initiative. For the past twenty-five years, Ms. Mouscardy-Johnson has served and continues to serve as a NYSUT local representative, as well as on countless district-based committees. She is also the proud recipient of the PTSA Jenkins’ Award for her dedication to her students and her profession. Although there are challenges to overcome, Ms. Mouscardy-Johnson whole-heartedly believes in the ability of American public education to meet the intellectual, emotional, social, and creative needs of America’s children.

The Portuguese Merchant, by Natalie Mizrachi

About the Author Natalie Mizrachi lives and writes in New York. Experience freelance writing for various social services agencies and addiction programs in the New York area combined with her passion for history has led to the creation of The Portuguese Merchant. Often, the mental health community recommends a review of cultural and ethical values as a preventative to various stresses and addictions. The past it seems, is an excellent tool to help us harness the future. When Natalie delved into the dynamic heritage of her own Sephardic ethnic group, she realized it was a prime example of emotionally linking the exciting people and values of the past to the present. However few people she interviewed had more than superficial knowledge or any clue as to their roots. This resulted in a successful series on the history of Sephardic Jewry published in Qol Ha’ Qahal- The Voice of the Congregation, a premiere publication of the SCA,(www.SephardicCommunityAlliance.org). An often overlooked sub-section of Jewish History, the dispersion and survival of Sephardic Jewry greatly mirrors and augments the European and American march towards liberty. Now, expanding the topic with the power of fiction, Natalie weaves the facts together in a contemporary tale of intrigue and discovery. The result is a coming of age novel with the religious persecution of the Spanish Inquisition and the freedom embracing people it gave birth to as a back drop. Readers of every age are invited to log onto www.Nataliemiz.org or go to Facebbok.com/Nataliemiz/books and Instagram @NatalieMiz/books to learn which details are fact and which are attributed to poetic license in order to expand the experience of this engaging tale.

He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad. And that was all his patrimony. His very paternity was obscure, although the village of Gavrillac had long since dispelled the cloud of mystery that hung about it. Those simple Brittany folk were not so simple as to be deceived by a pretended relationship which did not even possess the virtue of originality. When a nobleman, for no apparent reason, announces himself the godfather of an infant fetched no man knew whence, and thereafter cares for the lad's rearing and education, the most unsophisticated of country folk perfectly understand the situation.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. There is no question By Stephen T. To swashbuckle or not to swashbuckle? And there is no question….to swashbuckle. Serial writer Rafael Sabatini has done the world a service with his classic tale of love, lust, and luck. Set shortly before the French Revolution, the hero, Andre-Louis Moreau, learns more about acting, revenge, fencing, and love in his twenties than most people do in a lifetime. The storyline certainly has its moments of excitement, which will bring most adventure seekers to the tale. Based closely, but not exactly on the 1921 novel, both Hollywood productions (1923, Rex Ingram & 1952, George Sidney) made a splash at the box office; and, according to critics, Sabatini’s literary sequel (Scaramouche The Kingmaker, 1931) never met with the same success as the original. I came to this story from watching one of Sabatini’s other novel-to-film productions The Sea Hawk (1924, Frank Lloyd). Curious and impressed with the adventure and storyline, I embarked on a search for more Sabatini. A search that soon led me to Scaramouche. Yet despite all the thrills, the storyline slows down when Scaramouche involves himself with the commedia dell’arte. Sabatini infuses copious amounts of melodrama into the storyline, which at the time in the early 1910s and 20s proved popular. For adventure seekers, this makes for slow going, but if melodrama is your thing then you’ll be pleased. The great thing is that Scaramouche has enough thrills and romances for everyone to enjoy and maybe that is what makes it a classic.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I enjoyed both the magical world building and the characters created by the author. By MORWA PAL Reviews The Salem Gathering is book 3 in The Council Series by NYT best-selling author Lynn Cahoon. The Salem Gathering continues the story of Parris McCall, bar owner and apprentice witch extraordinaire. The book begins with Parris’s best friend, April, in a pregnancy coma created by a spell cast by Alex Cabot, Parris’s cousin and the prince of the evil “Coven X”. Parris is frantic to help her friend, but first she and her trainer/true love, Ty Wallace, must discover the location of the evil and illusive coven. All the clues point to Salem. Along the way, they join forces with Derek, the genealogy guru, and free the banished witch, Prudence, from her stony prison as a fountain statue. Once in Salem, the group pretends to be tourists but they quickly fall into the trap set by Coven X –following where the Coven leads and finding clues that the Coven wishes them to find. Bridget Bishop, leader of Coven X, has plotted their every move all in an effort to finally destroy the “abomination” that is Parris McCall. Once Coven X get their hands on Parris, only the most powerful of spells can help her escape in time to save her friend –a spell of true love from the grimoire of a ghost. The book opens a bit slowly with the obligatory recount of the previous two books. If you haven’t read the series, I strongly suggest that you begin with Book 1, A Member of the Council. Followed by Book 2, Return of the Fae. Otherwise, this book takes a few chapters to really get into the flow of the story. Once fully immersed, I enjoyed both the magical world building and the characters created by the author. The story wrapped up the subplots and what not from the previous books in a satisfyingly happy way and left plenty of time for Parris to face a final test that changes her outlook on life forever.

Senior battle craft pilot Ha, a “blob” of intelligent pure energy is tasked to find or create new beings capable of melding with Ha's species to replace physical bodies taken from them. Nearly a billion years ago, Ha scattered “ancient life-seeds,” provided by his Species' Council of Elders onto a young planet earth, and created an experiment station. We are its product. Ha defends the planet from destruction by the Dark Force and the human Apex Beings themselves. The earthlings have evolved to a state of acceptance. Ha is a magnificent Warrior Pilot, but he is not perfect. He makes mistakes, costing many human lives, manages to vanquish all intruders, and routinely answers to the God Council for his misdeeds. His ability to communicate with the Apex Beings under his care teaches Ha much about the future of the two species.

Return of the God Ship: Visit by Ha, by Harry N. (Hap) Hambric

About the Author The author spent nearly fifty years serving the US Army on active duty and in Department of the Army Civilian Positions. He is internationally known as an expert in the fields of land mine and improvised explosive device detection and has six US patents related to these fields and small military sensors. The scope of this book looks at technologies and concepts that are far beyond today's . . . and compares them with some that are here now. Return of the God Ship questions many beliefs we hold about the topics of universe age, religion, and science, and while this book is science fiction, it is very difficult to dispute the possibility of alien visitors . . . or their intent. The author is aware of two verified/substantiated UFO incidents occurring near highly classified military facilities circa 1968 and suggests UFO visits are more common than we think.

By Freda Lushbaugh "Return of the God Ship: Visit by Ha" is a science fiction fun read. To those who are not knowledgeable about scientific terminology this would be a good introduction into the science fiction world. The author's creativity was interesting and I was always curious what the next occurrence might be. Throughout the book it was interesting to see the parallel of human evolvement. I especially liked the mind meld emotions expressed later in the book. The stage has been set for a sequel and I look forward to reading about Ha's next encounter.

Found myself cheering for Ha during the battles and laughing when he experienced intimacy for the first time. Definitely could see a sequel for this one!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Excellent book!! Clearly written with lots of code examples, complete github repository and solid reference for common features. By Kindle Customer Want to thank the authors for an excellent written book. I had recently finished the multi tenancy book from ryan bigg and that was also a well written book so, i thought i would try this one as well. They do a good job of building out a ticket application using TDD and BDD, authentication using devise gem, styling using jquery, file uploading using carrierwave gem, tagging, sending email, deployment to heroku, designing an API, refactoring, and last chapter of rack-based applications which discusses mounting rack applications, middleware and using sinatra. The best part of the book is the github repository with 89 commits by chapter and sub chapter, that you can track your progress and if you get stuck you compare your latest commit with the authors and easy to find your mistake without googling for hours. 12/14/2015 - since i last read this book i have found i use it quite a bit as a reference. I used a sharpie on the cover and wrote down my favorite pages: github repo p.46, capybara p41, semantic styling p106, simple form p113, devise p149, admin-interface p171, pundit-roles p215, file upload-carrier wave p.284, testing JS-webdriver p284, Jquery p314, coffee script p320, tags p382, searcher p408, email p420, heroku p449, 12factors p452, amazon aws p453, fog p455, rails-12factor p456, puma p458, travis ci p462, maligun p465, rack p497.
