In 1886 a shy, middle-aged piano tuner named Edgar Drake receives an unusual commission from the British War Office: to travel to the remote jungles of northeast Burma and there repair a rare piano belonging to an eccentric army surgeon who has proven mysteriously indispensable to the imperial design. From this irresistible beginning, The Piano Tuner launches its protagonist into a world of seductive loveliness and nightmarish intrigue. And as he follows Drakes journey, Mason dazzles readers with his erudition, moves them with his vibrantly rendered characters, and enmeshes them in the unbreakable spell of his storytelling.

Between a rock and a hard place By Guillermo Maynez This is the partially fictionalized account of the last days of Hadji Murad, a renowned and feared Chechen -more precisely, Avar- warrior in 1851-52. Feared by the ruthless Imam Shamil, ruler of Chechens and other Caucasians, Murad is forced to defect yet again to the Russians, who recieve him warmly but suspiciously (he has switched sides before). Murad keeps telling the Russians he won't be of much help unless they support him in getting his family safe and back from the cruel Shamil. Some of them incline to do so, but others fear he might be just spying on them. The action drags on, with no resolution arrived at, until Murad makes his final dash.As literature, the story is incredibly well written; as background information on the origins of the still-going-on Chechen war, it is priceless. Tolstoi show here his very literary genius: in only 125 pages, he conveys a portrait of many characters, each and every one with his/her own full personality. It is marvelous how Tolstoi can give a whole personality to even the minor characters in a short work. The depictions of landscapes and circumstances are also masterful, and you can really feel the cold wind and see the wooded mountains of that magnetic and troublesome corner, neither fully European nor Asian. It is, then, the story of a real man who got caught between the despised Russians and the murderous Chechen leader, really a tragic figure in the sense that he has to make decisiones in front of certain death for him and for his family, whom he deeply loves. Great literature tends to be that which posts credible and appealing characters in limit-situations, and this is clearly one of the best. Refreshing to read an action-packed, well-written, historically interesting story with compelling characters.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. "War? War, indeed!...Cutthroats and nothing else!" HM, 118 By PACE Tolstoy's brilliant but quiet and cold-eyed satire of war-makers, both Russian and Chechen, from the lordly heights of the Tsar's Winter Palace to the scattered villages of Muslim fighters at the Caucasian edge of empire, and all players between. A "war story," yes, but in a league with For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Naked and the Dead, The Things They Carried, all of which it surpasses I think. Hard to convey the power of this little book. Much is in the structure: 25 chapters in 125 pages, the action alternating between the Russian and the Chechen sides, and from one place to another within each side, this alternation itself effecting a kind of commentary on the plot. (The brief, parallel glimpses of the Russian and Chechen homefronts in chapters 8 and 17, which show how differently, but how horribly in both cases, the war is brought home, are especially keen.) Also a meditation on the nature of true heroism, and on what it means to live one's life with a true awareness of death, of which attitude the title character, Hadji Murad, becomes the doomed and blessed embodiment. Perhaps not (pace Bloom) the greatest single narrative in the Western canon, but Perfect, in its own formidable terms.

My book group wanted to do a "short" book with "meat" and we thought Hadji Murad by Tolstoy would be perfect. Without thinking I purchased the cheapest new Hadji Murad I saw. It's the Filiquarian Pulishing,LLC book I'm talking about. It turned out I'd purchased a book that reads like it was translated from the Russian by computer. It certainly never had a human editor. The spelling was bad but the grammar was worse. What I could tell was a wonderful, exciting and relevant story had no charm. Shame on Amazon for selling this. Shame on me for not sending this copy back and reading Hadji Murad as Tolstoy intended.

June 1645. After their rout at the battle of Naseby in Northamptonshire, King Charles' forces are in disarray, their last hope the loyal hardcore in the West of England. Colonel Hollie Babbitt, following the Army of Parliament westwards, has a degree of sympathy for His Majesty. His own troop of rebels, Anabaptists and horse thieves is in almost perpetual disarray.... But with the creation of the New Model Army, Hollie is being forced to make his own last stand, as a spokesman against this new inflexible regime. And of the two men who've been at his back since the beginning of the wars, the volatile Russell is invalided out after a mysterious incident at Naseby, recuperating under the watchful eye of the mending-est lady in Essex. And Luce is much occupied with his own budding friendship with enigmatic Trooper Gray, and a future after the war that doesn't involve killing. Love, in both likely and unlikely places. Death. Bubonic plague. An epic poem about the battle of Marston Moor. Blood, fire, politics, intrigue, and ember tart. It'll all end in tears.... possibly.

About the Author Writer, mad cake lady, re-enactor, historian. Been slightly potty about the clankier side of Ironside for around 20 years, and lists amongst my heroes in this unworthy world Sir Thomas Fairfax, Elizabeth Cromwell and John Webster (for his sense of humour.) When not purveying historically-accurate cake to various re-enactment groups across the country, M.J. Logue can usually be discovered practising in her garden with a cavalry backsword.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heart and guts in the midst of war By Anna B This is the third book in the aptly named series “An uncivil war”, and yet again Ms Logue transports the reader back to an England that is torn apart between Royalist and Parliamentarian troops. It is bloody and muddy, there is death and gore, pestilence and tragedy – but side by side with this there is love and charity, hope and joy, albeit like small nuggets of gold in an otherwise dark description of a war fought for principles but in which most principles somehow got lost.Hollie Babbitt is a wonderful protagonist. A man who initially sold his sword to the highest bidder in the English conflict, he is also possessed of a strong sense of right and wrong, a man capable of compassion towards the so called Malignants, seeing little difference between himself and the people he is supposed to hate. Having had the word of God literally beaten into him as a child, he can quote Scripture with the best, but in difference to some of the more straitlaced among his companions he does not necessarily take bible verses as being God’s truth – however much of a contradiction that is.Hollie is surrounded by a colourful supporting cast, their common denominator being that they are like most of us, more interested in surviving to live a life than in dying for a cause they no longer are quite as enthused by. The New Model Army is growing increasingly intolerant, and those Parliamentarians that disagree with some of the harsher measures find themselves ostracized or threatened into obedience. Historical figures such as Tom Fairfax and Noll Cromwell pop up, Prince Rupert is subjected to a gloriously amusing character assassination, but it is Hollie’s band of companions that carry the story forward – war as perceived by those who fought and died in it.Other than fighting men, this book has its fair share of women and children, of horses that go by names such as Blossom and Pig. We have an absolutely wonderful sequence involving a kitten (and how Hollie misses his little companion once Fairfax has decided to confiscate it), there is the vibrant little Thomazine, all of two and already firmly in control of the men in her life, and then there is Het, Hollie’s beloved wife who has a heart the size of an oil-tanker – fortunately, given the number of people who queue up for a place in it.Ms Logue has a very distinctive style, a tongue-in-cheek approach to some of her descriptions that have me laughing out loud. She also makes me cry – and think. At times, the text could have done with a better editing (in particular by adding some more speech tags) but all in all this is a delightful – if at times emotionally difficult – read, with characters that spring to life with their feet firmly rooted in the mire of that most uncivil of wars, The English Civil War.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Good Historical Read (ARC for Romance Reviews Magazine UK) By Nigella. This book came to my hands as an ARC for Romance Reviews Magazine UK.At first I did wonder if this novel would fit the criteria readers expect from a romance novel. On balance violent battle scenes steal a march on romance –to begin with– so does the heroic romanticism of a troop in Cromwell’s New Model Army. In spite of my initial concerns, glimmer of a budding romance does begin to emerge. The tragedy of this story develops with heartfelt love bordering on the breaking of religious dictate to do with acts of immorality, but every good story requires a twist in the tale and this book has many exciting twists. When all is said and done this is a novel to do with soldiers who yearn for peace while bracing themselves in readiness to do battle. There is historical merit and vivid detail within the novel and of all the characters, and there are many worthy of mention, Lucifer Pettit stands out as a fine young man who ends up bedevilled by his namesake. I confess I find it difficult to applaud overt use of coarse language inside a book boys may be drawn to. However, on the plus side the narrative is fast paced. The action scenes are nail-bitingly real and the secret masquerade is somewhat amusing. I rate the book a Historical Adventure Novel with a little romance. The narrative is strong and endears the reader to the well defined voices of each character.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. lovely story telling By Paul Bennett Let me start out this review by stating that I absolutely loved the first two books in the series and wondered if the author would continue to elicit my love in book number 3. It is the opinion of this humble, yet somewhat revered scribbler of reviews, that M.J. Logue has risen above the rather high expectations I had for Wilderness of Sin. This is a war story that, while it does provide excellent accounts of the battles and sieges, is more in the way of a delving into what makes people tick kind of a story. The author has given us wonderfully drawn characters, Hollie and the others who have been around from the beginning of the war are changing. Some are maturing, such as Thankful and Luce, some are more hardened, Fairfax, and some are relinquishing their irascible exterior, Hollie. Regardless of the changes, the character development is what makes this book sing. I think the best chapter in the book has nothing to do with the war, in fact it takes place in Het's garden as Thankful or Hapless or Apple, as he is called by a precocious toddler, and the self same toddler engage in eating bugs. It is a chapter I would loved to have written myself. :-) 5 stars without a doubt.

Rings of Passage: A Time Travel Novel with Richard III, by Karla Tipton

Review "A truly original time traveling romance featuring Richard III. A lady called Anise travels magically back in time, courtesy of a wizard's ring, and falls in love with the King just before the battle of Bosworth takes place. The unfolding events are fascinating with plenty of historically accurate details and a little bit of the paranormal thrown in for good measure. All of the ingredients come together to make a thoroughly entertaining read." -- R.D. Hale, , author of Sky City, Epic Science-Fiction Adventure series. "Rings of Passage is a finely-drawn historical novel involving a mix of real and fictitious characters caught in a complex plot of political intrigue, tender romance and magic. Author Karla Tipton writes skillfully to blend the genres of history, time travel, romance and fantasy. The history portion is particularly well-researched and detailed." -- Cara Bristol, author of the popular Breeder sci-fi romance series.

Historical fantasy with a strong romantic element By Cara Bristol When American actress Anise Wynford discovers a magical ring forged by a great Welsh wizard, she is thrust back into the Middle Ages where she meets King Richard III of England. She's immediately plunged into the middle of political machinations between the Plantagenets and the Tudors, but what complicates her situation the most is that she falls in love with the king. Contrary to the way William Shakespeare painted him in the Tragedy of Richard III, he's a kind, gentle man of great conscience. And she knows he's doomed to die in battle in a few short months. Can she save him? Should she save him? If she can save him, how will it change history?Rings of Passage is a finely-drawn historical novel involving a mix of real and fictitious characters caught in a complex plot of political intrigue, tender romance and magic. Author Karla Tipton writes skillfully to blend the genres of history, time travel, romance and fantasy. The history portion is particularly well-researched and detailed. Although she offers alternative (magical) explanations and outcomes, readers are sure to learn from Rings as much as they enjoy reading it. History has taught us how Richard III died, but Karla Tipton keeps readers guessing until the very end.

Excellent blend of medieval and paranormal By Read & Review Karla Tipton writes a fascinating time-travel featuring Richard III and a modern day woman.Anise meets and falls for the king shortly before the battle of Bosworth. All the major players of the day are featured. Lord Stanley, Margaret Beaufort, Henry Tudor, Lovell, etc.Accusations of witchcraft give authenticity to the paranormal twist and, with a rogue wizard on the loose, we are transported with Anise to a world on the brink of change. Will the course of history be altered or is Richard doomed to die in battle? As a fan of royal medieval tales I was suitably enthralled in the unfolding events. A recommended read for lovers of Richard III, paranormal, and romance stories.(I reviewed an ARC of this novel.)

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. A Gotcha Read By Charmaine Coimbra I'm not a fantasy novel reader, nor a romance reader, but I do love a good historical novel. So, I didn't fully commit when I started reading Karla Tipton's "Rings of Passage." Before I knew it, this obviously well-researched tale, with good dialogue, well defined setting, and compelling characters did a GOTCHA move and I was hooked.I do love a good wizard in a story, like Merlin of King Arthur lit, so I didn't back off when Tipton took her wizardry writing wand and made me fear the power of this story's wizards and wizards in training.Tipton showcased King Richard's internal torture with his attraction to the story's heroine. She kept him in character.Well done by a first time novelist. Well done!I can't wait for Ms. Tipton's next read.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Favorite of Series By J. Messer Ashes of Time is my favorite of the series. The story is now moving into a stark comparison of potential democracy in one world and the death of freedom in our world. I absolutely could not put it down and finished it in a day--now I can't wait for the next book. Highly recommend to anyone but especially to history buffs. If you're new to the series, start with prequel and read every book.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEXT ONE! By NANAB I really love this series. This latest installment doesn't disappoint. I won't go into any of the particulars so as not to spoil it for anyone, but suffice it to say I received and finished it in the same day. Super story! I Loved It.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Doesn't disappoint! By Jennifer Hein Having stumbled upon the first book in the series only to devour all of Ms. Woodbury's books way too quickly, I was awaiting this installment with excitement. Happy to say it was better than some of the last few in the series, offered interesting new twists and directions for the cast, and left me ready and waiting for more. If I have one criticism it is that there were many, many central and supporting characters to keep track of by the last quarter of the story. I'd love a crib sheet of the cast at the front of the books like some other authors with a large cast of characters will provide. All in all, an entertaining read and an exciting alternate history that continues to unfold in ways I enjoy. Keep 'em coming, Ms. Woodbury!

I so wanted to hate this novel By JF Erikson I so wanted to hate this novel, but the author made it hard to hate. The story seems to be a mix of "A Princess of Mars" and "The Last Days of Pompeii" with little actual Pompeii. The protagonist is an almost perfect hero with few negative traits, but it works in this case.

Elvira Hamilton has escaped from England, but the war between the Marked and the Radicals has followed her to America. Arriving in the slums of New York City in 1901, she and her sister are thrust into the midst of an even more dangerous conflict than the one they left behind. Marked are openly persecuted, stripped of their rights, and attacked in the streets. Radical spies lurk everywhere. And whispers of secret prisons, where unspeakable acts take place, pass through the city. Elvira and Dela are taken in by the Resistance, an underground group of Marked with plans to fight back, though their true motives are unclear. Meanwhile, Adam Laurence reunites with his father and brother, who seek to rally him against the Marked. Elvira and Adam struggle separately as their journeys slowly converge, each drawing closer to the other with every passing moment. And all the while, tensions simmer just beneath the surface, threatening to burst into open war. If I Resist is the second of three books in the Circle & Cross saga.

I do not typically read YA novels, but I thoroughly enjoyed If I Resist. Kelseyleigh took a unique storyline, introduced in the previous book in the series, If I Fall, and added a level of depth that clearly displays her progression as both a writer and a storyteller. At times thrilling and suspenseful and dark, and at other times poignant and touching, If I Resist held me from the first page until the nail-biting climax. As someone who loves history, I also really appreciated the obvious research that went into giving this book's setting (Edwardian England) and characters an authentic feel. I highly recommend If I Resist to anyone looking for a powerful and exciting read, laced with action and adventure, but ultimately carried by a plotline and character development that delves into some of the deeper aspects of the human experience--loss, pain, kindness, and the triumph of love. Can't wait for the sequel!

This sequal to If I Fall, the second of three books in the Circle & Cross Saga, had me hooked from the first few pages. Written with the point of view switching between main characters Elvira and Adam, the book was driven forwards to grow each of their stories separately yet connected at the same time. The connection I felt towards these characters was all thanks to the beautiful writing of the author. Never have I been so enthralled by a book, and I would highly suggest this to anyone looking for a new series to fall in love with. Can't wait for the third book and am excited to see what this author produces in the future. A hidden gem for sure!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A great read - Love Lies Bleeding By Mrs. Vonnie J. Hughes The Love Lies Bleeding of the title is a plant which provides a clue to a 70 years old mystery. Make no mistake, Laini Giles has crafted an out-of-the-ordinary police procedural here. I couldn't tell till right near the end what exactly had happened, but I knew early on the significance of the button hook tossed into the grave with the bloody corpse.Senior Investigator Frank Conley solves the mystery of the 70 years old skeleton, discovered by a hiker. The puzzle strikes close to home - within his own family - and as he struggles with his own problems he manages to piece together what probably happened all those years ago. 'Probably' often has to suffice because most of those concerned are dead. There is a ticking clock in the background, but it is not as overtly crude as in others of this genre. There's urgency but it has to be married with the slow moving actions of a small town. There are a lot of layers in this book, paricularly when it comes to characterization. Nobody is what they seem. LLB has been well crafted and in spite of the laid-back smalltown feel, it is not in the least unsophisticated.Well done, Ms Giles.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Perfect Vacation Read By Mary Anne Doty I finished Love Lies Bleeding last night and it was fabulous. The plot kept me guessing until the end, which is a nice change from the predictable conclusions found in many mysteries. I enjoyed the characters and setting descriptions. Makes me want to visit the Finger Lakes this summer. I'll be recommending this one to my friends who enjoy reading. Let's hope the author writes another novel because Love Lies Bleeding is the perfect read for a vacation.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A page turner! By Mclesh Love Lies Bleeding has a unique premise: investigator Frank Conley is called to the scene of the unearthed remains of a woman he discovers is the aunt who disappeared seventy years before. The story follows his investigation as he's determined to find out what really happened on this very cold case. He has a personal interest, a mystery to solve, and his own demons to work through. The action cuts from the present--Ithaca, New York in the year 1986--to Ithaca, 1916 in the months preceding his aunt's disappearance.I found myself immersed in the story of Frank's Aunt Libbie. The attention to detail was phenomenal with Giles providing vivid images. (I even learned a few things.) This book kept me up until two in the morning as I was determined to finish it and find the answers. It's a page turner, which good mysteries usually are. Highly recommended.

Scarred, grieving, he must nonetheless continue in his role as co-delegate to the fearsome Tier-vane or risk a conflict that could only end one way. Now both of them need to keep each other alive and maintain a perilous deception long enough to renegotiate the treaty with the Tier-vane, or throw their people into a war that could wipe out Terrans and Inc-Su alike. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Emotionally turbulent and evocative. Complex characters. By Lee K Note: This novella contains triggering subjects: rape, murder, being drugged and helplessTyree is from a race that can kill people with sex. Said race makes clone creches, and Tyree is asked to stand in for another member of her creche to complete a diplomatic agreement. Mirsee did not have Tyree's assassin abilities and lived as a dignitary, marrying the human diplomat Zander D'joren. Tyree now must masquerade as Mirsee until the treaty is concluded. She develops romantic feelings for Zander, which add complications to her mission.Tyree is quite complex. She has ideas about what is appropriate for her and others and starts the story something of a prideful bigot. Her skills have kept her in good standing, but she's asocial and rude. Her emotions are turbulent and brutal, her attempts to handle them clumsy because Su aren't supposed to have emotions and feeling is new to her. The nightmare scene is troubling to her as it was to me. She may be a trained assassin, but her vulnerability is touching. She doesn't make a very good guard, but she's not trained as one. Tyree grows to understand Zander and some other humans, and it broke my heart (in a good way) to watch her grow, hurt, and be hurt. I want to know how she will deal with the world after the story's end, because her life changes so drastically.Pippa Jay uses evocative language. It's a cut above the usual and immersed me in the setting. Nature, smells, tactile impressions are sprinkled in so the reader feels along with Tyree, almost in her body. I felt 'there' with everyone. The environments and secondary characters are detailed and compelling in their mysteries. This is an important factor to me. I didn't cry, but I felt longing, horror, fear, and tenderness during the course of the story. That's what does it for me: getting punched in the emotions.I questioned why a grieving Zander falls in love with Tyree so quickly. We don't know the details, because although the story is third-person, it is all from Tyree's perspective. Zander is not a complete cipher, but he can easily distinguish between his late wife and Tyree. So what does he find compelling about her?The end felt a little premature. Events with a great deal of emotional impact happen and I can only guess at the fallout. My hope is that the story continues so I can spend more time with the protagonists, Visaya, and Pevanne. Perhaps even with or from Zander's perspective? He's got to be experiencing some upheaval too.

It is what she was made for and she isn't used to getting involved with others. Her newest assignment may be her hardest yet. She has just learned a secret about herself and her new assignment is to help Zander make a peace treaty. She has to pretend to be his love who was killed and still protect him. Zander has gave everything for his job and just wants to finish it. Tyree may resemble his late love but she is far from being her. Someone doesn't want their mission to pass and will do anything to stop them. While they grow closer to each other so does someone who will kill to stop them.Tyree is very smart, tough and knows how to get the job done. She doesn't understand what she begins to feel for Zander. She does everything she can to protect him. She doesn't understand a lot about what a relationship is. Zander is really a shell of a man until Tyree gets him to open his heart again. He is tough and doesn't give up easy.I liked this book and both characters really don't know for sure what is growing between them. Tyree wonders if Zander sees her or his past love and I'm glad she uses her head and has that thought. Both of them put there selves in danger to save the other even when it is Tyree's job to protect Zander. He still jumps in to help her even when he knows e has to stay alive or much will be lost. I love her ability and it was a neat to read about. I have to say I really didn't see the ending coming. Tyree has a horrible time and I wondered if she would survive. Even tough as she is she has a weakness and it just made her more great. If you like a sci-fi book about fascinating people and different abilities I would recommend this one to you.

Wow - Original and Exciting By Merry I love Science Fiction Romance and have my firm favourites, but I would be hard-pressed to think of another book that really, really blew me away the way Tethered has. What an amazing and original premise and fantastic world building. Fantastic, yes, yet totally plausable because it's fundamentally all about the difficulties of relationships, irrespective, and in spite, of the origins of the participants. Just like here on Earth. Where there's a will, there's a way.I love Tyree and Zander, and I especially like that their journey wasn't easy or obvious. Stories where the protagonists coincidentally or conveniently connect are always fun to read, but it's all the more engrossing when there is nothing contrived about characters crossing paths as I feel Pippa Jay has achieved with Tethered. The layers of complexity in this short story grabbed and pulled me along at breakneck speed and once I started, I couldn't and didn't want it to stop.I always know I've found a great book when I feel emotionally connected to the characters and actually want to get involved in their ups and downs. Tethered does that as an exhilarating and all-encompassing Science Fiction Romance experience with a very satisfying - and excitingly open - ending that makes me yearn for more about Tyree and Zander and their fascinating cultures.

In 1885, between the Wasatch Mountains and the Red Desert of southwestern Wyoming, smoldered a cauldron of racial tension, labor strife, and corporate greed. Any spark could set off an explosion. The aftermath would be ugly and uncertain. Cub reporter Clinton McGregor was assigned to Rock Springs to cover the news. With little experience or training the twenty-year-old was cautious at first. He was a quick learner and with increasing confidence gained the trust of the leaders of the Union Pacific Coal Company, the Knights of Labor, and the "boss Chinamen" Ah Say, as well as the governor of the Wyoming Territory. Barmaid, Miss Gata, Clinton's lover, also provided him with guidance and inside information. This dramatic story of frontier brutality, courage, and intrigue is told from the point-of-view of the rapidly maturing newspaper reporter who must also confront ethical dilemmas. The massacre of the Chinese and the reaction of the survivors make both the reporter and the governor national figures. Award winning author Dell Isham brings a lifetime of experience to his writing. After receiving his masters' degree in history from Colorado State University he became an Army intelligence officer, teacher, state senator, mayor, lobbyist, and director of statewide organizations in Oregon and South Carolina. This well researched thriller will both entertain and inform the reader of life and death on the nearly lawless American frontier.

This isn't the Cowboys and Indians, West of the movies, but an historically accurate portrayal of the development of our current society and the development of journalism and organized labor. This exciting and informative story is shown through the eyes of a naive, but idealistic young reporter looking into the abuse of Chinese workers in the mining industry of a very rough Wyoming. The book is filled with colorful characters all with a unique voice.

By sabo16 In 1885, after ten years of labor strife in the isolated coal camp of Rock Springs, Wyoming, nearly 50 Chinese workers were shot down by the white miners. The slogan of the time was, "The Chinese Must Go!" This actual event is the background for an exciting novel. The story is told from the point-of-view of a young newspaper reporter who gains influence with the territorial governor and reports on the event and its dangerous aftermath.
