By SRL Diana Rubino has done it again with another well- researched historical, this time set in New York City’s Broadway. Billy McGlory is a musician and is offered his chance at his dream job. As he pursues music and business, his wife Pru works her way through the art world as a painter. Rubino shows the different facets of New York during the Prohibition Era.Soon, Billy is offered a job he can’t refuse and becomes involved with a shady business. At first he tries to deny his involvement. ““I am a musician, and that’s that!...I go to the club, play, get my pay, come home.” When he and Pru begin to argue about his work, he says ‘“Iwish you’d stop calling it the mob. For the last time,I’m not in the—” Then he said what he’d been thinking and was afraid to admit it to himself.’ Even as he gets deeper into the mob, the book is laced with humorous moments. When Pru goes into labor, she’s whisked away to a hospital and Billy has to scramble to find which one. When she goes again for a drug overdose, he shows up in just his trench coat. Billy and hospital emergencies don’t mix.As his work becomes more and more dangerous, it takes its toll on his marriage. Pru begins to lose her patience with the fights and the death threats. Billy knows it’s time for a change but will he get his revenge on mob that ruined his life?Quotes at the beginnings of each chapter set up the tale and give the reader an overview of the events of the day. Told through a narrator and through Billy’s journal entries, Bootleg Broadway is an in-depth look at the excitement and dangers of the time.

He has just married his childhood sweetheart, Prudence Muller, who also wants to be an artist. She’s pregnant, and Billy wants the best for their child. He’s discovered by Rosario Ingovito, a local mobster once from the Chicago Mob, now setting up business in New York. Rosie has big plans for Billy and his piano. Setting him up in a club, it only gets better as the mobster uses Billy’s talent to bring people in the clubs he owns. But Pru wants Billy out of the mobs. She knows where this connection will lead if he stays with his new pals.It does sky rocket Billy to fame, with his name in lights; his own hit play on Broadway, and records. Billy is flying high while his wife sinks into depression and drugs. With the mobs involvement in bootleg whiskey, prostitution, and now moving into drugs and gambling, Billy also sees that it must end, but in the mob, there’s only one way out. This was a fascinating story set in Prohibition and the Depression era New York. We see inside the Mafia, even meeting Al Capone and other high-ups in the mob. There are dirty cops and politicians on the take. The author did her research, and the reader is better for it. The love story is bittersweet, and the story ends as only such a story can when the mob runs the show – and your life. Yes, it’s a romantic tale, yet it’s also a Mafia story, and I highly recommend it to readers especially interested in the period, and for those who love a good yarn, and want to be entertained. It’s not just a love story.

Her writing evokes Depression-era New York City richly and thoroughly, from the rhythm of the language to the sounds on the street. You can practically hear the music and the clinking of glasses in the speakeasies.Billy McGlory is a train wreck in the best possible sense. Ms. Rubino has written a brilliantly flawed character whose good intentions spin slowly but inevitably out of control. I couldn't stop tracking his descent into hell and wondering, as he does, how he'd get out of this. A beautiful character study and a fascinating story of the American Thirties in all their danger and dazzle. Bravo!

“What Doesn't Kill Her is a kick-ass thrill ride from page one. This is the American answer to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” – John Gilstrap, author of High Treason and Damage Control

Jordan Rivera is an ordinary kid with an ordinary family, until a vicious killer takes it all away, sparing her, but leaving her broken. The murders of her father, mother, and brother destroy something inside Jordan, who spends ten long, mute years in an institution. Catching a glimpse of a news report about another family slaying, Jordan at last breaks her silence. Now she’s out, and she molds herself―body and mind―into an instrument of justice.

While a young detective pursues the case on his own, Jordan teams up with members of her support group, people like her, damaged by violent crime. They have their own stories of pain, heartache, and vengeance denied. With their help, Jordan will track down the killer before he can ravage any more lives. Her life―and her sanity―depends on it.

What Doesn't Kill Her: A Thriller, by Max Allan Collins

From Publishers Weekly Ten years before the main action of Collins's by-the-numbers serial killer vs. survivor-of-his-attack thriller, a man dressed in a police uniform invaded the Westlake, Ohio, home of 16-year-old Jordan Rivera. He stabbed her parents and brother to death, forced her to pose the corpses for a photo, and raped her. He spared her life so that she could tell his story to the world. Traumatized, Jordan spends the next decade in a mental health facility, where she steadfastly refrains from engaging with others. When she sees a TV news report about another family's slaughter, she emerges from her isolation. Meanwhile, local cop Mark Pryor, a high school classmate of Jordan's who has carried a torch for her for years, suspects that a serial killer is at work. Further contrivances mark this as a lesser effort from the author of the superior Nate Heller series (Target Lancer, etc.). Agent: Dominick Abel, Dominick Abel Literary Agency. (Sept.)

From Booklist Jordan Rivera has spent the last 10 years at Cleveland’s St. Dymphna’s psychiatric clinic, refusing to speak after her family was murdered in an attack she managed to survive. But when she sees a news report on a similar killing, she’s convinced her attacker is still targeting families. Resolved to avenge her family’s deaths, Jordan starts talking, and soon she’s released and making connections in a victims’ support group. As the group shares stories, they find that they are all sole survivors of unsolved attacks on their families, and they feed their hunger to fight back by reinvestigating their cases as serial killings. They find unexpected assistance from Mark Pryor, Jordan’s high-school crush, now a police detective working Jordan’s case off the books. But that may not protect them from their quarry, who’s been waiting for Jordan to abandon the clinic’s protective walls. Collins, known for his outstanding Nathan Heller historical series, courts contemporary thriller fans with the victims-turned-hunters premise and riveting amateur investigation. Some suspension of disbelief is necessary, but the ride offers sure thrills, and the company is great. --Christine Tran

Great New Collins Thriller By Randy Johnson Over the year since I first discovered his work, Max Allan Collins has become one of my favorite writers. He seems to do everything well: thrillers, straight crime, his tie-ins, non-fiction. It doesn't matter.WHAT DOESN'T KILL HER deals with a serial killer, not a new subject to be sure. But even here, Mr. Collins throws a different twist. First off, he's not even suspected by the police. There is one though.Jordan Rivera was sixteen when her parents and older brother were brutally murdered by a man who forces himself into their home. She's forced to move the bodies of her family together for pictures, then the man rapes and says he wants her to tell his story. For ten years Jordan lives in a hospital without speaking one word. Until that day she see a report on TV that a family had been brutally murdered and she knows he;s still out there. She speaks up then and is soon out with plans to find him. Somehow. Part of her release is she attend a support group for people like her: those with whole families slain. She realizes, or intuits, something else. They are all victims of the same killer and they want her to help find this monster. Also a young cop is working the case with the same thoughts. He knew Jordan, and liked her back in school, but like most young males was terrified to approach her. It's what drove him to become a cop, what happened to her family.Mr. Collins does a good job sprinkling clues throughout the novel as both the group and the young cop close in. Unknown to them, the killer was closing in on them as well.Another winner from a fine writer.Worth checking out.

Bean I think what disappointed me so much about this novel is the disparity between the strength of its first chapter and the steep decline over the following twenty chapters. The first chapter with its sheer terror, gritty violence and nail-biting tension sets the stage for a page-turning title. Unfortunately, no where else does the book live up to this amazing potential displayed. Like its cliched title, the book feels a bit like an immature idea of a serial killer book with trite and overplayed lines, ridiculously bad police-work and an overall melodramatic flair. It lacks all of the energy and authenticity present in its first chapter. It feels like even television shows have more research behind their so obviously Hollywood-ized police-work than this - where unsolved murder cases have bullets that have never been analyzed, where government-issued state IDs cannot be searched for a photograph, and a woman institutionalized for ten years emerges as a lean, mean kung fu master. Jordan Rivera, the main character, is so far from feeling like a real person that it is laughable. From her potty mouth to her ludicrous physical prowess (she takes down two armed muggers with only her bike chain), Jordan feels more cartoonish than realistic. If able to look aside the book's general absurdities, the plot itself is entertaining enough. It holds a few surprises (though certainly not the identity of the killer). Cleveland residents, however, will most likely take offense to the manner in which their city is portrayed - the police force is a joke, and apparently in a city with nearly 400,000 residents, there is only one support group for victims of violent crimes. And that fact means that coincidence isn't the driving force in this plot... With hackneyed dialogue and shallow characters, this serial killer novel hardly stands out - it may not be the worst thriller out there, but it is far from the top of the list, either. Except maybe for most ridiculous. The book ends with some pretty serious holes, but to be honest, even if those holes were filled, it wouldn't change my opinion of the book.

10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. MAC Does it Again By Richard B. Schwartz Jordan Rivera has suffered. Her parents and brother were killed in what appears to have been a violent home invasion. She was not murdered, as they were, but she was raped. She is sent to a mental institution in which she declines to speak for ten years. "I had nothing to say," she later explains. Then, one day, she sees the report of another murdered family and she is ready to leave the institution and seek justice. She does so with the help of a support group whose members share similar horrific pain and horrific memories. She also learns (in what first develops as a subplot) that a boy from her high school has become a detective and is investigating her family's case. While they did not date back then, each wanted to do so.Thus, we have a classic novel of vengeance, paired with a burgeoning love story. In the hands of Max Allan Collins, this all works very nicely and the book comes to a satisfying conclusion. The story is set in Cleveland and Iowa-based Collins catches the Cleveland ethos very nicely. Essentially a character-driven story, the murderer's motivations are straightforward and suitably scary. This is not a complex, high-concept, implausible story like Thomas Harris' family-killing tale, Red Dragon. Collins' novel is more muted, more circumscribed and more tight. The principal mystery here is, how does Collins maintain his incredible output and still sustain such a high level of quality? He is one of the most reliable writers in America; What Doesn't Kill Her is a worthy addition to his very considerable body of work. It is a fast read. I would like to see Jordan return in another case (and bring her switchblade).

Suddenly, we heard an incredibly loud explosion behind us. The blast was surely the most violent wrenching of the earth in history. Large black clouds climbing to the heavens like a giant tree. The dark smoke was mixed with large bursts or flashes of lightning and there was fire and flame easily visible at the top of the mountain. I have never seen anything so frightening nor so awe-inspiring. This is the end of days. The world is finished.

Compelling and Very Interesting By Charles Carfagno I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy of Ken Frazier’s book “Titus of Pompeii” and loved it from start to finish. The events takes place around the time when Mt Vesuvius is on the verge of erupting, so while you’re reading the book you are always reminded that the threat is real and could happen at any time. Ken Frazier did an excellent job crafting the streets, temples, maps, and even the plumbing of the city. It was a nice touch and really enriched the experience of the story. The story begins with a young blacksmith named, Titus who receives a mysterious note from his old friend Vibiana requesting him to go to her villa. Titus travels there and that’s when things start to unfold rather quickly as he is thrown into a situation that spirals out of control. The story is well paced, given the amount of detail, and flows very nicely. If you like a murder mystery story, compelling characters, and action, you’ll love the book.BTW: The art work and maps are so cool that I'm going to contact Mr Frazer to get a signed copy...

Exciting historical fiction with lots of action and intrigue By Kitty Smith The eruption of Mt Vesuvius and resulting destruction of Pompeii have always interested me and I've probably watched a dozen documentaries on the subject. Ken Frazier brings the history to life in all it's fiery glory and destruction in his exciting novel "Titus of Pompeii". As if an erupting volcano isn't chaotic enough, there's murder and mayhem, treasure to find, and non-stop action.Titus is a blacksmith, husband to Livia and father of an infant daughter named Dania. One afternoon while working in his shop a young boy arrives bearing an urgent message from Vibiana, a local prostitute who is nowhere to be found when he arrives at her property. When he discovers her stabbed and bleeding at the temple, she whispers something about Mithros and saving a medallion before dying in his arms. But witnesses accuse him of being her murderer, and he is soon charged with the murder plus defiling the temple of Venus. Titus needs a miracle to save himself and his wife, who stands accused as his accomplice. He will need to find the real killer as well as the medallion, and from the rumblings that shake the town it appears the god of the mountain is angry. Not a good sign. It's such a great story, loaded with suspense and intrigue. It's packed full of historical detail that brings the time and landscape to vivid life, and I could easily imagine the streets and beautiful villas of Herculaneum and the tall, imposing grand temple of Venus. Plus there's some great maps to help you visualize the towns and a glossary to get you up to speed on names and places that are unfamiliar. Great read!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Titus versus the Volcano By T. Jenkins A well written historically researched novel - with just enough extra suspense of the volcanic eruption. It was fun to see snippets of daily life in Pompeii, from the way they ate, to the ways that they worshipped. All in all - a fun diversion.

Being a leader among professionals can be very challenging--at a law firm, a hospital, or a college and university. The professionals are highly educated and want to be independent but realize they need your administrative support. How should you lead them? Why would they follow you, your decisions, and your policies? What do you need to lead them? This book is about the leadership of professionals learned primarily from the experience of being an academic dean and provost. While a great resource for deans and provosts, it is not exclusively for academics. It is for every senior administrator of a group of professionals--essentially leaders in their own right. The 101 lessons learned that are explained in this book can help any senior leader. The lessons are grouped into five categories: Authority and Responsibility; Decision Making; Processes, Procedures, and Policies; Working With Others; and You. Each lesson is brief with a summary statement and subtexts that explain further. The book is meant to be a quick reference or inspirational source for very busy, multitasking leaders--not a tome for indepth study. With this book, you can better learn, teach, and solve problems as a leader!

A Pithy Guide for the Perplexed in Academic Administration By Jeff Aper Scott Schneberger's compendium of suggestions and observations about leadership is pithy and direct. Both new and experienced academic leaders will find plenty to contemplate. This is the wisdom distilled from years of experience. It may not all be a match for every person and every situation, but it will stimulate good thinking about the range of situations large and small that an academic administrator will encounter in the course of a career.

Less than one-half mile from the hypocenter of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Shizue Nekomoto, daughter Yorie, infant son Toshio, and unborn son Toshiharu, miraculously survived the concussion force of nuclear winds and the ensuing firestorm. Shizue's husband, Toshiyuki, caught in the open by the blast, also survived. In the aftermath of unprecedented destruction, pestilence, financial ruin, and the prognosis of death for their immune deficient newborn son, Toshiharu, they also encountered the destructive forces of human nature. They must now survive selfishness and betrayal to forgive and love again.

Passport To Hiroshima: The Unthinkable, Inspiring Journey of a Japanese-American Family Based on a True Story, by Toshiharu and Rita Kano

Review "Passport to Hiroshima is one of the most stirring books I have read. The book is very frank, going into both the good qualities and the faults of the characters. It recounts the horror of the bombing as only a family who was there can do. I highly suggest reading this book. It is of both personal and historical significance and is like nothing else you will read."   --Tracy Riva Books & Reviews"The way in which the story was written made me feel like I was there living through this with the family. It was very hard to put down; couldn't stop reading."   -- Cathrine Lamb, The Chipley Paper

About the Author The authors, Toshiharu and Rita Kano, live in Utah in the foothills of Mt. Olympus. They enjoy a quiet life with their two dogs, Indie and Speedy, and a yard family of birds and squirrels. Toshiharu's destiny began with a grandmother's simple wish. His hope for the future is to be the last son of Hiroshima. Passport to Hiroshima is presented with a vision of a peaceful world saturated with understanding and compassion.

It is a compelling real-life story that goes into detail about those that died, lost loved ones, and most importantly - those that survived the WWII Hiroshima bombing. The book is exquisitely detailed. I could really visualize the scenes and the people as if I was actually there. The description about the air right after the bomb fell physically made me nauseated. I had never experienced this before when reading any book. I must also mention, that I am a very picky reader. If a book doesn't get my attention within the first five chapters, I am just not motivated to continue. By the third chapter in this book, I was hooked. I couldn't put it down! The first initial chapters were background - laying the foundation so to speak. Once the book took me back in time to pre-War Japan I was entranced! The characters in this book took me through all the emotions - love, anger, loathing, delight, laughter, surprise, disappointment, sympathy, disbelief, awe, etc. Even though all this happened decades before I was even thought of, and I have never gone through as tragic an ordeal, I found that I could actually relate to what many of the characters were experiencing at times. I also like the mission for the book - peace. It is hard to remember bad things, but to forget can sometimes be worse because in forgetting,we doom ourselves to repeat history. I for one do not want anything like this to be repeated ever again. My respect goes out to the authors - one for taking the courage to write this book and having to relive this horryifying event daily for however long it took to write it; and the other author and contributor for having not only the drive, stamina, and courage to survive, but the strength to thrive and the compassion to forgive. Absolutely FANTASTIC book. Cheers!

Very well written and brings the story to life in a way that I never imagined. Reading about the devastation in the aftermath of the bombing on Hiroshima is so real you feel you are actually there witnessing the horror (and horror it was). While it is difficult to read from a subject matter standpoint, I highly recommend it. Life is not just about the fun, light-hearted moments. Our true character develops from the hardships in life. The story being told from the viewpoint of an actual family who experienced this atrocity draws one in in a way that is unexpected. One reviewer mentioned it as historical fiction, however, it is anything but. The bombing was real, the family was/is real. Even if you are not a history buff, don't miss this one. An excellent read!!

By Mommy2828 An INCREDIBLE book for everyone who loves historical fiction, Asian fiction, and for anyone obsessed with WWII in general. The devastation that the two bombs created in Japan are difficult to think about, let alone read about. I've read many first-hand accounts about what happened after the bombs were dropped. But this is different - this gives you a connection to a real family. Loved it.

It is definitely a powerful tool; it is almost too powerful on occasion. The capabilities Samsung adds to their devices these days are impressive and intimidating. I found this writer's guide for Chromecast a couple years ago now, and since then he has released stellar guides that really unlock the potential for these Galaxy phones. As I've been on his mailing list for a while, he was nice enough to provide me with an advanced copy of this last week to review. Well I'm here vouching for and buying it for a reason: it's another winner, and writers like this deserve support. After only a week with this guide I'm already using the device differently. This book has stayed pinned to my home screen where I can reference it when I run into a question while using the phone. Pick it up and have you phone work better for you!

This book is one of the best! It is packed with information and presents it in a way that's easy to follow and understand. I kept my Note 5 right beside the book and found everything to be just as described by the author. The large and clearly marked illustrations certainly helped.I bought my Note 5 largely for its large screen size. Reading this guide was a revelation to me about its many other features and I highly recommend it. I suppose it would not be useful to "power users," but it is a godsend for those of us non-techies coming to a stylus-pen device from other kinds of smart phones.

8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. She has been happy with it and says it has greatly helped her ... By RS Barthelemy I bought this book for an older family friend who just got her first smartphone. She has been happy with it and says it has greatly helped her with the transition. I took a look through it as well (I am not new to Android OS). There is a pretty good spread of information, from the very basics all the way to rooting and using advanced utilities. I wouldn't consider it a complete reference manual, it's more of a series of tutorials and tips & tricks and it does not always discuss every single menu/option available.. Still should be extremely helpful if you're shaky on using your phone - true power users may already know a lot of the information. Still, I did pick up some "hidden" tricks that I did not know of. Overall, worth the money.
