Each installment leaves you satisfied, but still wanting more. Highly recommended. PS. Lots of strong women characters, too. Which is great, since most epic fantasy is lacking.

This manuscript was found (said Wallace in his Introduction, which was fiction of a cloth with the novel to follow) among a heap of old dispatches from the Viceroy Mendoza to the Emperor. It must have been to give him a completer idea of the Aztecan people and their civilization, or to lighten the burdens of royalty by an amusement to which, it is known, Charles V. was not averse. Besides, Mendoza, in his difficulty with the Marquess of the Valley (Cortes), failed not to avail himself of every means likely to propitiate his cause with the court, and especially with the Royal Council of the Indies. It is not altogether improbable, therefore, that the manuscript was forwarded for the entertainment of the members of the Council and the lordly personages of the Court. . . . everything relative to the New World, and particularly the dazzling conquest of Mexico.

Review from Rambles of a SAHM By Amazon Customer Thanksgiving is a time when we as a family gather around the table and offer our thanks for the provision that has been bestowed upon us in the past year. Before we eat we go around the table and say what we are thankful for.In preparation for that it has long been our custom to begin talking with our littles about what Thanksgiving is all about. We read several books aloud about the history of Thanksgiving so that they will understand why we are celebrating. Through all of this we focus on the One we are giving thanks to.This year we are adding in the My Give Thanks Bible. It has sixteen very simple stories that all point to God and the provision he has made for each of us. For instance the section entitled Food for Five Thousand is taken from John 6:1-14 and it says:"One day, Jesus was speaking to a crowd of people. They were all very hungry. Jesus blessed five loaves of bread and two fish and shared it with the crowd. Through God's grace, that little bit of food fed more than five thousand people. It was a miracle!"Then it has a little graphic that says Give Thanks and the following: "Thank you, god, for giving me what I need!" That is the exact message that I want our little ones to retain. From even before the pilgrims until this exact moment all we have has been given to us by our gracious God. He not only has provided shelter, clothing and food but He provided a Savior that we might live eternally. If you are looking for a way to focus on being thankful with your little ones this is a great book. It is short and sweet so their attention spans won't be tried but it still presses in the truth of Scripture.I received a copy of this book to facilitate my review.

The My Give Thanks Bible is a padded hardcover board book, with cute illustrations in a bright color palette. There are 20 page openings (for a total of 40 pages) that each have a title, Scripture reference, a short story, and a short prayer of thankfulness. The My Give Thanks Bible contains 16 Bible stories:Old Testament stories:- "How the World Began" (creation)- "Adam & Eve" (Adam & Eve)- "Noah's Ark" (Noah's ark)- "A Baby in a Basket" (baby Moses)- "Moses and the Red Sea" (Moses)- "David and the Giant" (David & Goliath)- "Wise King Solomon" (Solomon)- "In a Den of Lions" (Daniel)New Testament stories:- "Mary and the Angel" (Jesus' birth)- "A Star Lights the Way" (wise men)- "Jesus Is Baptized" (Jesus' baptism)- "Jesus and the Disciples" (Jesus' disciples)- "Food for Five Thousand" (Jesus feeds many)- "Jesus and the Children" (Jesus & children)- "Jesus' Sacrifice" (Jesus' arrest & crucifixion)- "Jesus Goes to Heaven" (resurrection & ascension)The stories and short prayers in the My Give Thanks Bible are the perfect size for babies and small toddlers. I love that the My Give Thanks Bible includes some stories that are not typically found in Bible story board books and has a focus on thankfulness. Focusing on being thankful can never happen too early in life. Overall, I think this is a must have for your little one's bookshelf.FTC Declaration: The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book or advanced reading copy. This does not change the fact that I will give my honest opinion in my reviews.

One of the rare exceptions is reading time. He loves being read to; thank goodness! We do required reading and family devotions together every day so it would be rough if he couldn't even sit for that! While his older brother and sister are at school I focus on reading him books geared towards his age. He loves having his own books to "read!"The My Give Thanks Bible was an instant hit with him. It must have been the bright, colorful cover with happy characters that grabbed his attention because he instantly took it and sat down to look through it. It has the nice soft cover and rounded corners that are perfect for toddlers to handle with thick cardboard pages for easy turning. This book goes through the most popular Bible stories that people are usually familiar with. Each story has a title, the reference of the verse(s) in the Bible where it's found and a short recap of the story. What sets this book apart from others is the "give thanks" aspect of it. At the end of each story it says "give thanks" and then says what we can be thankful for in relation to the story. For example, "In a Den of Lions" found in Daniel says "Thank you, God, for keeping me safe!" This is a great one for little ones especially who have fear as a daily part of their lives. They need to be reminded that God is watching over them, always taking care of them.I like that this book focuses on giving thanks with Thanksgiving just around the corner. It's a great reminder for our little ones to always give thanks to God for the things he does for us daily. My Give Thanks Bible is a new favorite for both the toddler and I!I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Civil War, War and Navy, Black history, Action Adventure A troubled country, a courageous heart, and the struggle for freedom. In May 1862, Robert Smalls, a slave and ship’s pilot in Charleston, South Carolina, crafts a daring plan to steal the steamship Planter and deliver it, along with, the crew and their families to the Union blockade. After risking his life to escape slavery, Robert faces an even more difficult challenge: convincing Abraham Lincoln to enlist black troops. Based on a true story, Steering to Freedom tells the powerful and inspirational story of a young man who becomes the first black captain of a US military ship, while struggling to navigate a path to freedom for himself, his family, and his people. In Steering to Freedom, Patrick Gabridge has intertwined history with a meticulous and moving narrative of Robert Smalls—Confederate steamboat pilot, family man, and slave—whose daring vision to claim freedom against all odds will grab the reader from the first page. — Jessica Maria Tuccelli, author of Glow.

Steering to Freedom, by Patrick Gabridge

Review "Steering to Freedom sweeps back the curtain on an extraordinary story of heroism and sacrifice. Escape is only the beginning. Robert Smalls doesn't just save himself: he brings out his family, his friends and his mates -- and then he goes back, fighting not just the navies of the South but the deep-rooted prejudices and ignorance of the North. With a sure touch for historical detail and a mastery of the human condition, Patrick Gabridge brilliantly evokes the spirit of a time, a country in struggle, and the heart of a man at its center."-- Mike Cooper, author of Clawback and Full Ratchet"This powerful and inspirational story is skillfully and dramatically rendered by a writer who not only knows how to steer a good story, but who does so without losing sight of the heart-breaking humanity of his players." -- Mark Dunn, author of Ella Minnow Pea and Under the Harrow"With its cinematic scope, action-packed adventure, historical detail and emotional heft, Steering to Freedom will appeal to many audiences." -- Diana Renn author of Blue Voyage and Latitude Zero"Steering to Freedom is a swashbuckling, page-turning epic set against the immaculately detailed backdrop of Charleston Harbor during the Civil War. The story, based on actual events, reads with the freshness of fiction and the authenticity of truth. The characters from every walk of life earn your respect and then your admiration and finally your love. Patrick Gabridge has given us a whole new lens on the Civil War by bringing a previously unknown chapter to vivid, deeply moving, unforgettable life." -- Laura Harrington, author of Alice Bliss

A timely reminder of African-American heroism in the Civil War By Stephen Hunter Steering to FreedomPatrick Gabridge’s new novel, Steering to Freedom, is the epic story of Civil War hero Robert Smalls, who pilots the steamship Planter out of Charleston harbor to freedom in 1862 and becomes the first negro captain of a United States warship. Gabridge vividly recreates the bravery of Smalls, his black crew and their fugitive families on board the paddlewheel freighter as they steal out in darkness past the blazing guns of Fort Sumter. It’s fitting in this time of racial unease to remember Smalls’ path-breaking career. His example and his personal testimony to President Lincoln persuaded white Northerners to accept black soldiers into the Union Army – that they would not turn their guns against white liberators. The novel carries Smalls’ career to December, 1863, when the Planter comes under heavy Confederate fire during a resupply mission to Union forces besieging Charleston. The ship’s panicked white captain attempts to surrender. Smalls, still the ship’s pilot, holds fast and guides the ship to safety. In recognition of this further exploit, General Quincy Adams Gillmore awards Robert Smalls the command of the vessel.Gabridge paints a sympathetic picture of Robert Smalls as a heroic commander, savvy businessman and compassionate father. Another book could be written to chronicle Smalls’ career in the United States Congress, where he was the longest serving African-American member until Adam Clayton Powell.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Heroism beyond skin color By Marina J. Neary Patrick Gabridge's Steering to Freedom is an absolute must-read for all history majors focusing on American Civil War. This novel is an authentic account of one man's rise to heroism and assumption of a task that's nothing short of apostolic. It's also a must-read for anyone contemplating getting involved in social activism around the delicate and volatile issue of interracial relations. I find that many well-meaning individuals lack that background knowledge and have a rather cartoon-like two-dimensional understanding of history and the racial factor. The nature of the interracial conflict constantly changes. Racism is like cancer. You think you've got the right diagnosis, and you start a chemo protocol, and you think you're making progress towards victory, and then realize that the malignant cells have mutated and become resistant to the drug, and now you need to find a new protocol. The remedy that was relevant 50 years ago is not relevant today. You have to reevaluate the nature of the disease and come up with new treatment.Incidentally, I know that the author has a deeply personal interest in African American heritage and advocacy for that particular group. Perhaps, I should warn my mixed audience that I'm coming from the "I'm color-blind" and "all lives matter" camp. (Yes, I know I'm taking risks of being crucified as a callous, ignorant, privileged republican middle-class white woman for saying that). Robert Smalls is not a "black hero". He's a hero, period. Who happens to be black. His wife Hannah, the mother of his children, whose love serves as a catalyst to Robert's daring actions, is not a "strong black woman", as some readers might be tempted to label her. She is just a woman, a mother, whose physical and emotional resilience are result of fight for survival. As I was reading Steering to Freedom, the color of Robert's skin was not constantly on my mind. I don't know if that was the intention of the author.Gabridge's creative activities go beyond writing fiction. He is also a playwright, and his talent for dramatic dialogue is very apparent. I would love to see him adapt his own work to stage. His protagonist is an icon of courage and self-sacrifice, and a role model for all men - regardless of the color of their skin.

The Truest Metaphor By Christina Paige This is what historical fiction does best: takes a virtually unknown chapter of our own history and breathes life into it again. Patrick Gabridge has recreated events and struggles and real people so that we walk amongst them. This is a must read for anyone fascinated with the era of the American Civil War. I’d also like to see schools pick it up, as it presents a sympathetic, heroic protagonist who happens to be black.

Outstanding nonfiction novel By Steven Capsuto It's easy to see why this award-winning book -- which is selling like crazy in Spain -- has gone through eleven printings in just seven months. On the surface, it's a well-researched nonfiction story about an incident in 1939, during the final days of the Spanish Civil War, and the story of one of the men who sparked that catastrophic three-year conflict. It's also the tale of the book's creation, the journalist who wrote it, and the colorful people he met while trying to unearth the story that comprises the final two-thirds of the book.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. soldiers which redeemed mankind By Carlos Vazquez Quintana In 1937, Sánchez -Mazas a fascist writer and main ideologist of Spanish Falange was living as a refugee in the neutral embassy of Chile at Madrid, as the rebellion has caught him in the capital, ruled by the Republicans. He tempts to escape to France in a truck, but was detected in Barcelona also in the Republican side, and imprisoned. But when troops of Franco won and advanced in 1939, Sánchez- Mazas with some dozens of less important prisoners was driven into a forest to be shot before the arrival of the nationalists. Some prisoners attempted to escape. Almost none got to survive, but Sánchez -Mazas did, because although he was effectively found by a Republican soldier in a hole, it seems that man, feeling that cruel war was over and lost, and tired of killing, refused to shot him and said his mates he hadn't seen nobody. Mazas survived during some weeks hungry and suffering intense cold, aided sometimes by the inhabitants of the rural masías. Later, he joined the Franco's troops and was named a minister, mostly honorary than real. This is the skeleton of this novel, and these facts are true, but the narration includes more. At the beginning, the author, a journalist and writer of dubious talent -truly the own Javier Cercas if you want- hears to tell this story to a son of Sánchez - Mazas, also a real figure and excellent writer, Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio. Cercas wants to know more about this strange episode, but Ferlosio, an old man something extravagant, eludes to explain more details, divagates with irony, as he has an ideology frontally opposite to his father, and refers to the soldiers of Salamina, the ancient battle when the Greeks defeated Persian fleet, as he thinks soldiers as these are capable to save mankind from disaster. The search of the identity of that mysterious, perhaps dead man that saved a prominent enemy sixty years ago is the full plot of this novel. Effectively, Sánchez- Mazas wrote a diary of these terrible days now almost lost in a library. The difficult searching of these possible soldier of Salamina has to end in France, when an eighty old year Spanish man named Miralles, ex combatant of both Spanish Civil and World War II with the Foreign Legion of general Leclerc survives in Dijon with terrible scars, now under French nationality. The author interviews that old soldier, an exceptional creation of the author and perhaps the best part of the novel, but the reader must decide if he was the man which didn't killed his enemy or not. Cercas does a reflection: "One doesn't find those things he search, but only those than life wants to give him".

This is one of them. It's the tale of a rather bookish "gentleman" who is virtually press-ganged to work on a sailing ship. Through vicious hardship he is faced with the choice of survival (and in the process compromising his morality) or almost certain death. The main villain, if you will, is the Captain of the ship, who's physical strength and presence is overwhelming. Some of the language is a little archaic, but the Kindle dictionary didn't let me down. It's well worth the read. Get past the first ten pages, and you may find it hard to put down.

47 of 52 people found the following review helpful. A philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure. By Dave Schwinghammer When I first dipped into THE SEA WOLF, I was struck by its similarity to CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Humphrey van Weydon's ferry-steamer, The Martinez, is rammed by another ship in San Francisco Bay in a heavy fog. Van Weydon is rescued by Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunter, The Ghost. Larsen refuses to take Van Weydon ashore, laughing at his offer of money. Once again, I am reminded of another famous book, MOBY DICK, and Larsen is Captain Ahab. Ruthless and single-minded, Larsen decides to make Van Weydon his cabin boy on this four month trip to provide seal pelts for fashionable American women. Van Weydon resists until Larsen catches hold of his arm and squeezes. A man of letters who freely admits never working a day in his life, Van Weydon does everything he's told from that point on, including aiding and abetting the Captain as he mistreats his crew. Early on we learn some of Larsen's motivation when he and Van Weydon have a literary discussion. We discover that Larsen is a literary bully. He's never spent a day in school, but he reads Shakespeare, Robert Browning and John Milton. London's theme becomes clear and Larsen and van Weydon argue about immortality, van Weydon declaring that man has a soul; Larsen retorting with a Scrooge-like "Bah!" And suddenly we have the first gleanings of an existentialist novel. If there were no God, how should man behave? Larsen, seeing evil everywhere he looks, decides he will do whatever is best for him personally. The conflict is not precisely good versus evil. Van Weydon is a weakling, a pampered rich man, a coward. There is also much to admire about Wolf Larsen. He outduels seven men during a mutiny. He's constantly reading, constantly trying to understand. When Van Weydon's story arc begins to ascend--he learns seamanship, rebuilds the ship when its masts are destroyed--we can't help but give Larsen a bit of credit. Larsen never took no for an answer, no task was too difficult. Another interesting element in the book is London's fledgling steps toward women's liberation. Van Weydon falls in love with another castaway, Maud Brewster, and together they overcome storms, isolation on a small seal rookery, and sabotage. I guess I knew London was a better writer than the man who wrote CALL OF THE WILD (His short story "To Build a Fire" is one of my favorites), but I wasn't expecting a philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.

This is not your parents’ Macbeth or the one you read in high-school English class. A dark and bloody tale of a Scottish lord and his beloved wife trying to save their eleventh-century kingdom from its corrupt king, Macbeth: A Novel hurtles toward listeners in gripping contemporary prose, thanks to novelists David Hewson and A. J. Hartley. With the verve of today’s fast-paced thrillers, Hewson and Hartley create an electrifying tapestry out of Shakespeare’s tale, relaunching two of literature’s most powerful characters.

Macbeth, a loyal servant to the Scottish crown, has shed blood time and again for his homeland. And yet the country is crumbling around him, torn apart by warring clans and foreign marauders and ruled by a corrupt, self-serving king. Desperate to preserve the kingdom, Macbeth and his wife, Skena, craft an ambitious plan to keep Scotland whole, never intending the tragic spiral of murder, treachery, and personal collapse that ensues.

Macbeth: A Novel, by A. J. Hartley, David Hewson

From Booklist Starred Review "Shakespeare’s Macbeth, with its bloody plot and characters, has inspired writers for years. Now Hartley and Hewson go a step further and adapt the play as a novel, in the process expanding its political background, making its language more accessible, and humanizing its characters. While both Macbeths profit from this approach, it’s Lady Macbeth, given the first name Skena, who is the primary beneficiary. Barren after the earlier death of their infant son, she presents her war-hero husband (with whom she has a deeply loving and passionate relationship) with political realities and then masterminds the assassination of Duncan, which leaves both Macbeths guilt-ridden. But Lady Macbeth has no role in the ensuing bloodshed. Macbeth’s longstanding friendship with Banquo also is fleshed out, and the appearance of Banquo’s ghost is rationally explained. The supernatural comes into play with the witches—here both cannibalistic and carnal—who make more frequent appearances but cast the same predictions; not all of the frequently quoted lines from the play appear here, however. This is an exceptional adaptation of a classic work of literature, a novelization that can add to the understanding and pleasure of the original to which it pays homage." — Michele Leber

About the Author British-born author A. J. Hartley is the Russell Robinson Professor of Shakespeare Studies at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and works as a scholar, screenwriter, dramaturg, and theater director. In addition to seven best-selling novels, he is the author of The Shakespearean Dramaturg; an upcoming performance history of Julius Caesar; a book on Shakespeare and political theatre; and numerous articles and book chapters. He also edits the performance journal, Shakespeare Bulletin, published by Johns Hopkins University Press. He is married with one son and lives in Charlotte.David Hewson is the author of seventeen novels that have been published in twenty different languages. His first book, Semana Santa, was transformed into a movie, and his nine-book, Rome-based Nic Costa series is currently in development for television. Before devoting himself full-time to writing, he worked as a journalist for the London Times, the Sunday Times, and The Independent.

Macbeth fully realized By Janice This Audible offering takes the familiar story and turns it into a fully realized epic, placed in historical and political context. The writing is outstanding, so that I could envision the very landscape and scenery throughout all of the story locations. It is both an action story and a political and psychological thriller. The characters are fleshed out with complexity that prevents black and white "good guys vs bad guys" caracature. By filling in details of the political and cultural scene of 11th century Scotland, the authors allow us to have a better understanding of the motivations of all the characters, particularly why Macbeth decides to kill the king in the first place - going beyond the motivation of raw ambition. Lady Macbeth is much more complex than the ambitious behind-the-scenes manipulator that we are used to - and much more sympathetic. The presentation of the 3 witches is particularly facinating - no "double, double toil and trouble" - but very specific descriptions of their different personalities and their role in setting the action in motion.A word about the reading by Alan Cumming - Superb! As a Scot, his voice lends welcome authenticity to the narration. He is a master at providing distinctive voices to all of the characters, and I was especially impressed with his ability to provide credible voices to the female characters - typically a difficult task for male readers.I listened to the entire book in one day - unable to put it down. Whether you are an audio book fan or new to the medium, this is a wonderful piece of drama that should not be missed. I will look for more original titles from Audible if this is the standard of excellence that can be expected.

28 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Lady Macbeth, now a real person rather than a crazy lady obsessed with blood. By Two kids mom This review is for the print version. This is a fantastic book that fleshes out the characters in Macbeth. What do I remember about Lady Macbeth from Shakespeare? A nutty women sleepwalking and murmuring "out, damned spot" (which always makes me think of stain removing products). In this novel, Lady Macbeth becomes a real person, with complex feelings, understandable guilt, a scheming mind and a justifiably tortured view of the world. Her maternal feelings are at constant war with her desire for her husband to assume power. The death of her own infant warps her, and then the death of a favored small boy begins unwinds her remaining sanity. The final blow is the realization that she has truly lost her husband, and much if it is her own fault. Her suicide, rather than being an afterthought, is the direct result of her own guilt and the indirect result of taunting by the three witches who push her mentally over the edge. These witches are so much more in this novel. When I think of the witches from Shakespeare the line "Double, double toil and trouble" and a bunch of hags standing over a large black pot comes to mind. The three sisters in this novel are far more interesting, surreal and disturbing. Rather than bystanders delivering prophecies they attempt to influence the behavior of the characters (and in some cases succeed). The Author's notes at the end of the book give some very interesting information about the play, Shakespeare's sources, the real Macbeth and an outline of how the novel differs from history.I would suggest you read Shakespeare's version of Macbeth before you read this novel. Don't read this instead of Shakespeare's Macbeth for your English class, as it is not exactly the same story! It adds depth to the story, and you will be able to see where the authors took liberties with the original play and where they expanded upon it. Although there is some sex and violence in this book, it is no more than the original and I will have no trouble handing this off to my 16 year old son to read. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, it added much depth and understanding to my comprehension of Macbeth.

32 of 36 people found the following review helpful. A reverent prose dive into Shakespeare's "Macbeth" By Scott Schiefelbein God bless Shakespeare - the man knew a great story when he saw one. His tragedy of the Scottish king Macbeth echoes across the ages, and not just because Shakespeare wrote some of the best lines in the English language. This bloody tale of greed and guilt ensnares you, never to let you go.So why novelize one of the greatest plays ever written? Well, because reading a play can be a challenge, to put it bluntly - there's a reason that we attend plays and read novels. Authors A.J. Hartley and David Hewson are no hacks - they are skilled writers steeped in both Shakespeare and the available history - and they have written a powerful, sympathetic novel directly inspired by Shakespeare's story. Both Macbeth and his wife - who's actually given a name! - come across as very understandable protagonists. Macbeth remains a mighty warrior, and is steadfastly loyal to the unworthy King Duncan. His friend Banquo is even stronger, but does not have Macbeth's wisdom or strength of character, or so he thinks. These two save Duncan's kingdom from treachery, but they learn that the treachery was not without justification. This plants a seed of doubt into their hearts about Duncan's worthiness to sit the throne of Scotland (and the Scots generally elected their king - not the foolishness of hereditary rule for them). This doubt provides the fertile ground for the three witches, who emerge as much more fully-realized villains in this piece. These witches know that the greatest lies are twisted truths, and they dispense with enough half-wisdom to start a number of plots going. And while in the play they tend to get the ball rolling and let the Macbeths do the rest of the damage, here they pop up again and again, moving things forward as only witches can do.Lady Macbeth, one of my favorite characters, gets a more solid back story. Already unhinged by the lack of a child, Lady Macbeth also sees all too well how Macbeth's loyal defense of Duncan puts Macbeth in Duncan's cross-hairs - he is the tree that grows too tall. For all the violent, bloody mischief of this novel, it remains Shakespeare's play. Indeed, the best lines from the play appear in the novel, and that is as it should be. However, it does remind the reader that there is another version of the story out there, and this is the lesser of the two.All in all, this is a very enjoyable take on the Macbeth story. Despite the sex and violence, I would highly recommend it to a mature high school student who finds it hard to pull the context and story out of the play. I would also recommend it to any fan of the Macbeth story, with the caveat that it will never, ever, in a gazillion years, compare to the original.

I'm only four chapters in and already more confident using the jQuery online documentation and writing much more efficient, succinct code. This is my first title from this publisher / authors. I am very happy with this purchase because...1. Examples / sample code had just the right amount of detail. Another book I purchased assumed the reader had never programmed before which resulted in wordy, overly detailed explanations and examples that really tried my patience.2. NOT a cookbook. Explained HOW things worked better than most books. Some just tell you what method to use without explaining why that method works in a certain way.3. The run-in-browser labs were very helpful. Seeing the results of jQuery selection and manipulation in real time allowed me to experiment with the content rapidly and without writing code from scratch.4. In the print edition there is a coded coupon to download the digital version for free.Note: The Chapt 3 lab runs in iframe. By default browsers won't open a local file in an iframe so you will need some sort of security workaround. Since I already had python installed I opted to run a local web server from the example code folder. (one liner --> python -m SimpleHTTPServer). There are also some possibilities for starting a browser from command line with switches turning that security feature off. You will probably need to Google a solution for your browser / operating system to get this to work. It will be worth the effort. It would be nice to see some detailed options / instructions on the book's website and / or just to have this lab hosted online somewhere.

Byun A lot of technical computer books are littered with typos and errors not to mention not working example codes. I read this book pretty much from cover to cover, and I cannot recall any major typo or error in writing. Kudos to authors and reviewers for that. I have tested every single example codes provided, and it all worked as expected. You may say that is the way it should be. But I have purchased many computer books with non-working examples, and I had to figure out how to make it work while comforting myself with the notion that having a book is still better than nothing. In that sense, this book is exceptional.
