"Heart Land" is a sweet and deft look back at life in a small Ohio farming community during 1939. Friends, family and community are linked by geographic semi-isolation. Communication is slower, but people seemed to pay more attention. In Ockley Green, every one knows and (mostly) cares about everybody else. Adults try to understand and children struggle to live up to adult values. In this safe world, a bright and reckless boy with an active imagination conjures all the mischief he can cram into a year. It all begins when Bodacious Scurvy, the town’s notorious alley cat, crosses Oliver’s path and gives him an idea. This well-written novel is very much like a Norman Rockwell painting - hopeful, generous, lonely, occasionally bitter and always innocent - it’s a love story for an idyllic past that draws the main character out of his childish disregard for other people’s points of view and allows him to transcend his own limitations. The man he grows into, however, will always echo a childhood he can never leave behind. Caroline Miller’s debut novel, "Heart Land", is a fictional memoir of a boy growing up in rural Ohio between the Depression and WWII - a time of social and historic importance that still resonates with Americans. Miller's tone is often humorous and sometimes poignant. She creates a story that is easy to sink into and difficult to say good-by to. “… Heart Land wears the triple crown of literary genius: it is profound, beautiful and arresting from the first page…” - Writerface.com

Through sketches of everyday life, family, relationships, good humor and anguish we feel a genuine love and connectedness to the stories and characters. The beauty of the human experience is discovered by the young boy and we get to revel in his ever deepening understanding. I was so moved by the first few stories that I had to put the book down for a break. Was I being so easily manipulated or was this beautifully told story really that good? After finishing it I decided that great art is in the experience of it and I had a wonderful, powerful experience. Bravo to Caroline Miller.

The oldest of two brothers packs family photograph albums after his mother's passing in 1979, and the images evoke memories from 1939-40.Sometimes funny, occasionally poignant, Heart Land is a first-rate, observant look at prewar life in a small Ohio town. It is a time and place that are mythic now. Honesty, courage, and caring, friends, relatives, family and community are linked in generational and geographic semi-isolation, and every one knows and (mostly) cares about everybody else. Adults try to understand, children struggle to live up to adult values, and small incidents loom large as major life lessons are drawn from them.Integrity and compassion underlie Heart Land's sensibility. Its people are real living, breathing human beings. Miller's work is engaging; an often lyric expression of small-town Midwestern America left not so long behind, with solid, reliable echoes that still lead to a simple, but well justified life.

Verbout In a nutshell, it's the story of two young boys and their misadventure throughout one year of their young life. The story is presented through independent chapters highlighting various experiences they share. Oliver, being the older of the two, have many of the stories center around him. His mishaps, misgivings and misunderstandings. Having had the privilege of reading Caroline Miller's other excellent books, it is amazing to me how Caroline writes dialogue for children equally as well as she does for adults, somehow knowing exactly how each generation would have spoken to the other. The feelings, conversations and activities of two young boys so colorfully placed onto paper. What a gift!! Difficult to pick a favorite chapter, but if I had to it would be Herman's friends mother as she attempted to teach her son how to cook with the short time she had to live. Another favorite chapter would have to be "Of Ghosts and Goblins and Little Green Men." Once you start reading this book you will not be able to put it down!! I enjoy Caroline's writing for a number of reasons. Without warning she throws fun, exciting new words, Her works raise you to a different level of understanding and I am grateful to her for that. Her style of writing is so appealing, informative, intelligent, relevant, full of a lot of terrific information. Also enjoyable are her metaphors which are quite often very humorous! Although sometimes they are exact opposite and just takes your breath away! I love to linger on some of her metaphors and almost always, on her last sentence. I admire her talent!Really a must read as I believe, at least for me, are all of her books.

Going to college is all about pursuing one’s interests and expanding intellectual curiosity, but students need to consider college the same way as people would any other investment - like buying shares of a company’s stock, a car or even a home. Students and families need to carefully analyze what they are likely to get for what they put in, that is, they need to estimate their financial Return on Investment (ROI), in addition to the emotional benefits that a college degree provides. This book shows you that an outcome-based approach can significantly improve ROI versus the traditional methods of choosing colleges based on college rankings, “fit” and other “feel-good” factors. We present simple research tools to help in every aspect of college selection: the location and region you choose, the colleges you eliminate, what you study, how long you take to graduate, how you limit costs (and borrowing), what career you pursue, whether or not you get an internship, which industry you choose to work in and how soon you can get a meaningful job after graduation. Each of these outcomes impacts your ROI. We know, because, we have been perfecting these techniques in the field for over 3 years. For example, we look at US Bureau of Labor Statistics data to select states and regions with low unemployment rates and high GDP growth numbers because we know that students who graduate from such states have a better chance at promising careers. We explore ONET and the US Occupational Handbook to find growing careers in upward-trending industries - so that students can pursue an appropriate education. We look at the SEC's Edgar database to find company concentrations and job clusters - the premise is that if you are educated at a college nearby, you will become a local candidate with specific skills and thereby become a candidate for an internship or a job. Studies have shown that companies like to support local communities. We explain how articulation agreements between two and four year colleges are an under-exploited avenue to get into premier schools via the back door, often at a huge discount. We take strong positions against colleges which aggressively recruit students using commission based recruiting agents (mostly international students). We ask students to stay away from colleges with low graduation rates or with high student debt. We introduce students to innovative ways to finalize schools including using social media tools. But at the core, we use reliable financial analysis tools like ROI, Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return; and reputed websites that are employed by professionals in government and industry everyday. The only difference is that we adapt these tools to researching colleges. A White House Fact Sheet from Sep 2015 says: "With college costs and student debt on the rise, the choices that American families make when searching for and selecting a college have never been more important. Yet, students struggle to find clear, reliable data on critical questions of college affordability and value, such as whether they are likely to graduate, find middle-class jobs, and pay off their loans." This book squarely addresses the concerns of the White House and delivers a lot more through many examples and case studies to illustrate how to select colleges which provide the biggest bang for the buck.

The writer has done an excellent job analyzing and summarizing various factors that ought to be considered while applying to graduate schools. One thought kept re-occurring to me while reading this book - If only I had access to such a valuable comprehensive source before applying to grad school!! Using the Return On Investment (ROI) approach to research colleges is an effective means to make college selection. Also, the book identifies various resources available online that can be very useful. I would happily recommend this book as a must read for anyone who is considering studying in the US.

Larkin takes characters we all know and somehow manages to make them personable and relatable. In the time before he was a god, Odin was a tribal leader. But then, magic happens. A goddess with an apple of immortality. Honestly, Larkin had me from there. Watching his interpretation of Odin's trek to godhood (the beginning of it, at least) left me craving more. In typical Matt Larkin fashion, his action scenes are packed with excitement and some really awesome weaponry. While nothing can match the sheer beauty of his Skyfall trilogy in my mind, Ragnarok is promising to come awfully close. This is a great fantasy for those who love myth, excitement, magic, and battles against powers greater than man. Highly recommended.

By Wordwizard I enjoyed this refashioning of Norse mythology, which starts off following the adventures of the mortal Jarl Odin, and ends with him having become an immortal god and Aesir King (the Aesir being a mortal tribe as yet, except for a few). Although this is the start of a series, with unanswered questions that leave me eager for more, it is a stand-alone book, with a clear ending. Although Odin and his brothers begin the tale as normal human beings, which surprised me, this retelling remains close to the original tales. I was anxious to see how Odin would apotheosize (This isn't right, his being a human! Fix it!), and worried when things did not go his way. Although the story (written in 3rd person) primarily follows Odin, there are also bits from Sigyn's perspective as well. Although it is NOT a romance novel (thank goodness), there is both lust and love of various kinds. Odin is a hero with a destiny to fulfill, and pride which he recognizes he must overcome (as well as some mild vulgarity). Although I can't yet give it five stars, as a classic that will stand for all time, because the series is not yet completed, I suspect that I will be happy to revise this later. There were a number of typos, for those who care about such things, but nothing too serious, so I've just sent a full list to the author. If the Kindle Free Sample you read is now free of errors, you can assume the rest have been fixed too. At any rate, it would be a shame to let that stop you from enjoying this treat!I received a free e-copy through LibraryThing for the purposes of providing an unbiased review. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. gods, goddesses and tales of old with a twist of the beginning!! By lcsdr60 Taking from the Norse gods of old, Larkin gives you an exciting and entertaining view into the before they were gods time. Odin, Loki and many more that were to be gods in a time of their own humanity. Before Odin became a god and his life was but a short period of time in the lives of the immortal. This story even goes into very major detail of many of the legends that began with the gods of werewolves, and spirits. This read kept me reading to the end. I could barely sit the book down long enough to rest my eyes before needing to get back to it. Great read and a new way of looking at the tales of the Norse gods.

After the Dark, by Kathy Otten

From the Author I had fun writing this short story as it is the first one I've written based on a true event. The Great Molasses Flood took place in Boston in January 1919 and part of the North End of Boston was wiped out my the molasses, including the firehouse where my characters are trapped. The other challenge was to write a romance in which the two characters are buried in the dark and separated by debris through more than half the story. I hope I was able to execute it well enough to transport you into the collapsed firehouse and you enjoyed your time with Liam and Rosalie.

Excerpt from The Making of a Teacher: A Contribution to Some Phases of the Problem of a Religious EducationThe opening chapter of Genesis is a record of transcendent things. It reveals God at work. He is recorded as creating the physical universe and all the life that subsists upon it. Among the interesting phrases descriptive of his activity, none is of greater moment than the phrase - "Let us make man." So far as we know, this proposition involved the production, out of crude material, of a wholly new creature. Man is a new creation, not a new combination. In a vastly more restricted sense, but in harmony with the same central idea, it has seemed to me wise to name this volume - "The Making of a Teacher," instead of "The Training of a Teacher." The training of a teacher assumes that we have the teacher at the beginning of the process and that our work is to modify something already provided. This does not describe accurately the process by which we are to secure teachers. A teacher is something different from a man. To make a teacher involves a new creation out of the raw materials which constitute humanity at large. We must create a new product. This new product is the teacher. The teacher is more than a man trained to be a different kind of a man.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Presentation of ideas on education By Leon Czikowsky This book was a leading influence in religion education (i.e. Sunday Schools) from around a century ago. It continues to provide insights on how moral education may be implemented. Noting that "Jesus declared that the end of the education of the human soul is to live in harmony with the will of man", this book prescribes the virtues of politeness, morality, and humility as the goals of all civilization. The author sees teaching as a creative process that transforms a student into a new being. He urges that instruction reach the will of students and leads them towards proper living. "Character is God's currency" is what this book declares. The author was a leading figure in forming education policies as well as religious instruction. He served a term as Pennsylvania's Governor where his pacifist sentiments were tested by the necessity that he serve as Commander in Chief of the Pennsylvania National Guard (in his role as Governor) during World War I. This book is informative to both students of religious instruction as well as understanding the thoughts of a man prior to being called to handle his conflicting views of resisting violence versus his duty to administer.

Great resource for novelists, book and magazine writers By Janet Wagner This book provides a lot of helpful information for writers, although it is designed primarily for novelists, book and magazine writers. Bloggers, technical writers, journalists, and other types of writers may find some of the information provided in this book helpful. If you're looking to publish books, novels, or magazine articles, this book is worth buying.

By Paul Vintner The 2016 edition of Writer's Market lacks information critical to the search for markets, for example, it does not have an easy way to see if contests or submissions have entry fees or what those fees might be. The book has advertising in it designed to pressure you into joining writersmarket.com which ultimately has many of the same problems and is as user unfriendly as the book. On the other side, the book has a very helpful guideline for query letters. If not for this last point, I would have given this product a 1 star rating.

Suicidal thoughts had comforted Rhoda since she was a child. She never actually wanted to die. But that changed on a cool autumn day in 1969 when the lifeless body of her infant daughter was pulled from the banks of Clinch River. Distraught, Rhoda set out on a journey to get as far away from War Gap as she could. With bus tickets and the use of her exhausted legs, she made it all the way to Grand Saline, Texas. She fell on the ground in the middle of nowhere and placed a gun to her head. Only, it wasn’t the middle of nowhere. It was one of the few farms owned by a Black family in all of Van Zandt county. It was also the location of a recent murder fueled by racism. Rhoda was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was she?

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fast Paced look at mental illness and racism in the not-too-distant past By J. Burnett 3 for 3. Love Towe's books, and this one is no exception.Set a few decades ago, the story touches on issues of violence, mental health, racism and suicide. Now, that being said, it's not all dark and sad. It's got a fast pace, and despite being so short, some very well developed characters. Your protagonist is pitiable at times, and at others, you want to stand up and cheer for her. The supporting characters are few (other than in mentions by the 2 main characters), and flesh out the story well.I'm terrible at writing book reviews, because I am worried about spoiling a book for someone by mentioning too much. So, forgive the vagueness.Rhoda is our main character, and she's suicidal. I mean, very seriously, going to do it, suicidal. But, Ben interrupts her. Not in a kindly way, but in an angry way. He has enough issues without her baggage adding to it. He's just lost a wife. Violently. And, being a black man in a backwoods, racist area (Hello, KKK), he doesn't have even a hope for justice. In the short time span of this story, Rhoda finds a bit of a reason to keep going, and things turn out far different than I had anticipated.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Gripping read By Cat From the first scene of the novel I felt as if I were down in the dirt with Rhoda with my fist clutching a gun to my head in an attempt to end the pain. The author did a great job of evoking the senses throughout the book. Silencer deals with issues of loss, suicide, rascism and determination, not easy topics to write or read about but was it was a compelling read and steam-rolled on towards an equally as intense closing.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Silencer By renee nadabomb cherry Mental illness is a tough topic to cover. The author helps bring some understanding through this story. Mental abuse was generational in the family. Grandma Vickers was verbally abusive to her daughter, Sarah. In turn, Sarah was verbally/physically abusive to her child, Rhoda. When Rhoda meets Ben, a farmer and landowner, baby Nashe and Paumina, she encounters a more sinister form of abuse from the town folks of Grand Saline, TX during the 1960's. It's an eye opener page after page!I plan to read more works by Julie Roberts Towe and rate this novella at 3.8 stars.

As I knew that William Le Queux wrote in the first part of the 20th century I did not expect to find an adventure story so full of twists, turns and excitement. A cross between the Alan Quatermain stories and the jungle tales of Tarzan, this story, moves with never a lull from a boy's school in England to the jungles, deserts and rainforests of the Dark Continent.Sent by an uncaring Uncle to a boy's preparatory school outside London, young Scarsmere, nick-named "Scars," finds a close friend in the strangely pale-complected Omar from an unnamed African kingdom. As time passes and both boys reach the brink of manhood, Omar is summoned home by his mother, the Naya of Mo, also referred to as the Great White Queen. When Omar invites Scar to accompany him to his African homeland, Scar learns that Omar is actually the crown prince of a wealthy kingdom whose geography keeps it well hidden from the known world. With bleak prospects in England, Scars decides to accompany his best friend on what seems to be a wonderful adventure. What follows is treachery, betrayal, deprivation, adventure, danger and war in a non-stop series of developments that forces the young men to grow up quickly and forges their friendship into devoted brotherhood as Scar bravely accompanies Omar from freedom to captivity and slavery to the opportunity for Omar to sit upon the ancient Emerald Throne of Mo. Along the way the friends encounter duplicious courtiers, a schemeing queen, vicious Arab rulers, cruel slavers, and every manner of villain. But their journey to their destiny is not without allies: Kona, a black African chieftan and his brave warriors; Galiba, a high minister of Mo, who is faithful to the ancient ways; and the beautiful Liola, whose goodness wins Omar's heart.High adventure and dramatic action is the hallmark of this story. I enjoyed it very much. I hope you enjoy it as well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THE GOOD OLD DAYS. By Robert Private eye Eliot Cross is a Mike Hammer type of tough guy with a soft side not seen by many. The book is four mystery short stories - HEADACHE, HEARTACHE, NECKACHE, and BACKACHE that run the gauntlet from kidnapping, murder to comic books....The stories are set in the 1980's - the gum shoe trying to make a living, always two steps away from true love, and surrounded by dirty streets and crooked people, but also a few that believe in hope and justice. The stories are also used to showcase the soon to be released TRIPLEYE TRILOGY with Eliot Cross as the main character. I enjoyed the author's crisp and down to earth style - the look back at a different age when it seemed there were only bad criminals and justice was always reachable. A quick read that will peak your interest for more - all the parts for a good mystery.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Thoroughly enjoyable! By DragonOne It seems there was a lot going on in Columbus, OH in the late eighties. Private Detective Eliot Cross is kept busy solving crimes, some of which he was hired to do and one or two that just show up in his daily life. I could have spent more time with this wise-cracking gumshoe with attitude. I loved his old-fashioned principles and no-nonsense approach to dealing with people and their crimes. I especially liked his dialogue with brought a genuine snigger to my lips; a lovely throwback to the classic one-liners of the genre. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable read!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. An interesting book with four different stories By Linda Thompson, Host of The Authors Show Eliot Cross is an interesting character who gets himself into interesting situations. This little book is comprised of four short stories, all about Cross in different situations. While the character flows from one story to the next, the stories are rather disjointed. I was never quite sure who Cross was supposed to be in each of these vignettes; is he a detective who gets himself into weird situations almost by accident, or is he just a dude bumbling along as a part time PI who tends to stumble over bodies. As Hegenberger’s first book, he has done a good job of setting the stage; I do hope that for his future books he employs an editor to pick up on words left out, or misused, and if he keeps the short story format, that they follow one another a bit more seamlessly. I am interested in reading the second book because I enjoy watching an authors’ evolution and growing maturity with each passing book.

The History of Henry Esmond, Esq., by William Makepeace Thackeray

About the Author William Makepeace Thackeray was a nineteenth century English novelist who was most famous for his classic novel, Vanity Fair, a satirical portrait of English society. With an early career as a satirist and parodist, Thackeray shared a fondness for roguish characters that is evident in his early works such as Vanity Fair, The Luck of Barry Lyndon, and Catherine, and was ranked second only to Charles Dickens during the height of his career. In his later work, Thackeray transitioned from the satirical tone for which he was known to a more traditional Victorian narrative, the most notable of which is The History of Henry Esmond. Thackeray died in 1863.

From AudioFile Out of modesty, one supposes, the impossibly virtuous (and fictional) Henry Esmond narrates his adventures in the third person. Raised to believe himself a nobleman's love-child, he eventually discovers he is a legitimate heir. This knowledge he suppresses in favor of his near relations and benefactors, especially the Jacobite Lady Castlewood and her daughter, both of whom he loves devotedly, and one of whom he eventually marries. In the meantime, neither he nor his kin can escape the political, martial, and religious turmoil of Queen Anne's England. Published in 1852, this novel helped establish Thackeray as Charles Dickens's rival in popularity. Narrator Gordon Griffin, who has previously tackled both, here displays an enthusiastic sincerity that contributes much charm to his deep understanding of the tone and milieu of this novel. Though seeming to downplay the melancholy that seeps into the prose, he manages to convey it without letting it overwhelm the vigor of the writing. A Masterpiece By David Snyder Although for some reason forgotten by the US public, "The History of Henry Esmond" is one of the finest books ever written in English language. May be it has lost its luster because it offers no excess of blood-spilling and sexual adventures, but instead finds its way to describe the deepest and most vulnerable chambers of the human heart. I have read a handful of books, be it in English, French, German or Russian, that described the human strengths and weaknesses while tying them to a character one can relate to with such skill. People who do not like it, it seems, are just shamed by the morals offered in such a book, and are quick to forget it. I read "Henry Esmond" when I was a young boy, and now, half a century later, it hasn't lost a beat.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Esmond By A Customer In the minds of some, justifiably the finest novel in the English language. The neglect this novel has suffered is appalling. Requirement: a mind for detail, a sympathy for history, an artistic sensibility. Read it at least twice. Only one reader in a thousand will remember the button reference on the last line. A pity that this book should be out-of-print. Pater thought it a perfect work of fiction. Trollope thought it was unsurpassed.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. All the good ones seem to be out of print By Maggie The History of Henry Esmond begins with the sweet Lady Castlewood stumbling upon the lonely abandoned Henry as she tours her new home. Her husband has inherited the estate and his illegitimate 11-year old cousin Henry, is fearful of the reception he will receive from the new owners. Will they throw him out? Treat him like a servant? When they instead embrace him into their family (which includes their daughter Beatrix and son Frank) he is overjoyed. What he slowly begins to realize (as he first becomes their almost-son, and later the de facto head of the household) is that this blessing is more complex than it first appears.Throughout the book, Henry longs for a family, and although he is a part of the Castlewood's, he is also always an outsider. They come to rely on him because they know he will sacrifice more for them then any real son or brother ever would. With every page, the Castlewood family becomes increasingly complex - some relationships are strengthened and some are slowly destroyed in such subtle ways that when a catastrophe comes, it seems inevitable, and at the same time, surprising. True motives are hidden and twisted and everybody longs for a kind of love not given. Through it all, we have Henry's narration (although he speaks of himself in the third person), which casts a lonely and reflective tone over all the events. A beautiful book.

“The boy watched in horror as one of the robed and hooded men pushed the Negro off the stool. A second man kicked the stool away. The Negro’s body jerked. It swung back and forth and then it was still. The only sounds heard at that moment were the rustling of leaves in nearby magnolia trees and the boy’s muted sobs. He knew that what had happened was his fault, and he would live with the scars until he died.” In November 1950 seventeen year old Peter Mason decides to ‘look around’ America and sails, steerage, on the French Line Liberte. He has survived the German blitz on London, but has lost his mother. His father, returning from service in the British army has long since deserted the family. He spends several days in New York, then drifts down to Jackson, Mississippi. What he finds there he will never forget, and it will irrevocably alter the course of his life.

The Cockney Lad and Jim Crow, by John Sharer

Review "...John Sharer is an especially gifted novelist who can engage the reader's full and informed attention through a deftly crafted story that is an accurate portrayal of the antebellum south's brutal segregation and murderous oppression of African-Americans. A compelling read from beginning to end and one that will linger in the mind long after the novel is finished and set back upon the shelf. Very highly recommended...." James A. Cox, Editor-in-Chief, Midwest Book Review"...Smashing....Don't miss this one - it is a super read - I devoured it in three days.  I haven't read his first book but look forward to picking it up." -  Patty Smith, Union Jack"Gripping historical fiction about a London teenager who relocates to  a Jackson Mississippi that's rife with the horrors of racism and which inevitably alters his life forever.  A lawyer as well as an author, Sharer's passion for justice shines through the book." Indulge Magazine Online"...a classic example of master story-telling. I praise Mr. Sharer for crafting a truly engaging read where history plays second fiddle to the human condition that is inherent to everyone, regardless of the shade of your skin." Nick Rossi, ReadingOtherPeople

Stellar Story Teller At Play By ReadingOtherPeople The Cockney Lad and Jim Crow, the newest book from trial lawyer and novelist John Sharer, is a classic example of master story-telling. It’s a delicate but effective take on the still controversial topic of racism in the southern USA. Despite being set in 1950, the novel itself still contains elements that are unfortunately still at play in various areas of the world, just as turning on your television to the daily news will be apt to tell you. But instead of merely reiterating a news-like piece, Sharer has created a work where the goals of redemption and acceptance are on the forefront the person al journey befalling the books protagonist, Peter Mason. The story has Peter Mason, who at 18 has decided to emigrate to the US and leaving behind the tumult of a post-war London. Having been subject to much personal heartache, not to mention the sights that can never go unseen during the war, Peter hopes to start a new life for himself in America. Finding himself in Jackson, Mississippi just before the Civic rights era, Peter encounters a town where segregation is the norm, and where the color of one’s skin defines their treatment and placement in the hierarchy of the town’s society. From the above plot summary alone, the reader knows that The Cockney Lad and Jim Crow is going to be a heavy piece, and indeed it is. But with this heaviness shines a writer’s credible detailing of events. The novel itself is loosely based on Sharer’s own experiences, thus catapulting the story to another realm of integrity. The sheer detailing of life in a small, racially charged town immerses the reader in another time and place entirely. Sharer has an uncanny ability to propel the plot forward with the introduction of accessible characters who are so believable that the reader feels they can see them clearly with their mind’s eye.The historical backdrop of the novel allows the book to have a temporal placement, but it is a story that transcends whatever limitations of time that has been shackled upon it. The story is a commentary of a foreigner’s ability to quickly see through the netting of a society, allowing for fresh eyes to truly take in what has been considered sacrosanct and subvert it for the greater good. The Cockney Lad and Jim Crow is an important piece of fiction in many integral ways. It reminds the reader that the treatment of others is a basic tenet of civilization and should be realized at every possible turn. It’s also a reminder that it was not that long ago where the color of one’s skin denoted their plot in life, which is hard to believe. I praise Mr. Sharer for crafting a truly engaging read where history plays second fiddle to the human condition that is inherent to everyone, regardless of the shade of your skin.Like what you read? I very much enjoyed his first book “Honor Knows No Borders”, but with this book, he elevates his prose to a new level, with a captivating story of life and racism in Mississippi when the Confederate Flag held an esteemed place in society, and was not the subject of derision that it is today. Mr. Sharer demonstrates an uncanny ability to draw a reader into the story in such a way that everything else going on in the reader’s life temporarily vanishes, making it virtually impossible to put the book down. I highly recommend the book to those with an historical interest in this period of our history, as well as anyone else just interested in a fantastic read. David Waller

Just Can't Wait For The Movie By Susan Waller Mr. Sharer delivers a real page turner with a terrific plot based upon his own personal knowledge of the time. It is an entertaining, honest reflection of how people were in the South during a period that would be difficult for anyone to be proud of today. We were allowed to see this era through the eyes of a protagonist who, like myself and many other readers, found himself in a totally alien environment, attempting, virtually as an army of one, to challenge the established culture of the times.Susan Waller

Jesusita is the story of immigrants—legal and illegal—trying to survive in California in the years after World War II. Jesusita, alone and impoverished, struggles to keep her four young children together. Though she finds support from Padre Montes at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, her faith won’t solve her problems, especially those with her daughter, Paulina. Far from home, Filipino laborers are denied by law any contact with white women. Angie, the young daughter of an illiterate and unmarried mother, knows only one way to make money. And Felix, abandoned by his mother and separated from his only brother, is placed in a foster home on an isolated ranch. The interrelated lives of these people provide a complex, sometimes violent, and often tragic image of American poverty within the nation’s postwar boom.

Jesusita, by Ronald L. Ruiz

Review Ronald L. Ruiz has produced a dystopian plot that reflects more fact than fiction... Ruiz's character building approach and eventual connection to Jesusita is a unique way of keeping his story vibrant and flowing. A balanced interlacing of frankness and obscurity, Ruiz's text deftly captures not only the harsh realities of lives wrought by impoverished circumstances, tension from unfair laws, societal stereotyping, but also the biting results of pure choice...There is no doubt that Ruiz's story is dark and, at points, downright depressing. Regardless, he draws his plot to a close with an air of poetic justice, while, at the same time, leaving his readers to wonder what the future holds for his characters. Jesusita is an unforgettable page-turner!¨ -- Manhattan Book Review

Raw and honest story of immigrants to America from Mexico in the 1940s and 1950s By Sherrey Meyer Often I will select a book based on its cover or the language on the back cover. But when you're reviewing books, often the cover art or design and the blurb from the back cover are not available. You receive the description or synopsis, and sometimes a cover image. You make a decision and hope it's a book you'll enjoy reading. When I received my copy of Jesusita, I looked at the cover and said to myself, "I probably would not have picked this up in a bookstore." However, I had committed to read and review Ronald Ruiz's new novel, and I would.Ruiz is a gifted writer. With prose describing even the most subtle of nuances, he writes Jesusita's story. It is the story of every immigrant crossing into America in the 1940s and 1950s. Some farmers provided food, housing, and clothing for these migrant workers. Others lived on the ranches and farms where they worked. Jesusita's story begins in 1945.Jesusita's story is not a pretty one, not a story that will make you feel warm and fuzzy. Filled with raw images of parents beating their children, abusing them with words and emotions, Jesusita's story plays out for the reader in a depth of reality often hard to accept. Having grown up in an abusive situation, my body cringed and my heart broke at times and tears flowed. But I had to keep reading. Why?Ruiz wants us to know the history of our country and of the people who came here hoping for a better life. Not all received that better life. Some did fortunately, but others were deported or the goodness they hoped to find never materialized for them. Ruiz doesn't dabble with the history of the situation; he tells it just like it was in 1945 and forward.A well written and inspiring story despite the raw and brutal truth found between the covers of Jesusita deserves your attention. I hope today I have caught you with something that makes you want to read this part of our country's history. And the history of our neighbors to the south, the Hispanic Americans who still fight for a better life. I highly recommend Jesusita.Although I rarely award a star rating on this blog, today I give Jesusita and her author, Ronald L. Ruiz, five stars for the quality of writing and the intense truth shared so well.FTC Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from the publisher via iRead Book Tours in exchange for a fair and honest review. Ruiz thanks various individuals such as Jay Amberg, who he says made the book possible, Amanda for her support, and Ren McClellan for his insight and encouragement. Jesusita tells the story of legal and illegal Mexican immigrants, with the lonely and impoverished titular protagonist struggling to care for her four children, The fifteen-year-old Sergio, the thirteen-year-old Yolanda, the eleven-year-old Paulina, and the three-year-old Concepcion, after her husband Rogelio dies in a truck accident the previous month, finding support from Father Montes at St. Teresa’s Catholic Church, although her face isn’t exactly essential in solving her clan’s problems. Before the main text, Ruiz gives many historical notes, indicating that by 1975, the State of California had the eleventh-largest economy in the world, its chief industry of agriculture built upon the backs of both legal and illegal Mexican immigrants. Afterward he goes farther back in history to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which granted citizenship to thousands of Southwestern Mexicans newly part of the United States. The author further adds that tens of thousands of Mexicans immigrated to America between 1850 and 1910, and although the Immigration Act of 1917 implemented immigration quotas, it exempted Mexicans, who would later labor by the millions during the Second World War, afterward finding better jobs in towns and cities and more being considered illegal then. The forbiddance of Hispanics men from marrying Caucasian women plays some part in the chief narrative, beginning in October 1945 with Jesusita and her children working on a ranch near Fresno, California, her family having crossed into the country at Mexicali, and ultimately moving into the city proper for winter the same month, and dealing with various familial issues. The story is generally enjoyable, although there are many points where the author uses pronouns, even in the beginning of new chapters, without actually identifying whom exactly he’s talking about anywhere nearby, although this reviewer would most certainly recommend this story to those interested in history, chiefly focused on Hispanics.

The interrelated lives of these people provide a complex, sometimes violent, and often tragic image of American poverty within the nation’s postwar boom.Characters:There are quite a lot of characters in the books and pretty much almost all of them play a role in the book. Jesusita is a mother of four who is best described as arrogant towards others, Jesusita's three children respect her and are afraid of her, while her third child, Paulina always defies her at really major costs to health and sanity. She is also two-faced when it comes to church and her own children, but also extremely dedicated to church and to religion at the cost of everything else. At first Angie is a six year old girl who lost her innocence extremely early, and she seems to not question the world and what is going on around her. She is best described as materialistic and seems to be more concerned about her own pleasure and money rather than other things. Unfortunately another character, Felix, is one that I get to know the least, except that he is very methodical and loyal to people who take care of him as well as to his family.Theme:To be honest I'm kind of having a hard time articulating what the theme should be. Maybe that reality chases faith away?Plot:The story is in third person narrative mainly from Jesusita's point of view, although Angie , Felix and Padre Montes also play a small role in the story. I have to admit that although the story began in 1945 and immediately drew me in, when other characters such as Felix and Angie entered, I wondered if their stories also started in 1945 or not really? The story also takes a look at the lives of Central American immigrants to California as well as their prejudices towards others. (I was surprised that they saw people from Mexico who had Indian blood as less than.) The great deal of focus is on religion and its affect on Jesusita's life, as well as how she struggles with what life has dealt her and her family. The story is also not preachy and while religion is in the front of the story, it is very subtle and not overbearing.Author Information:(From iRead Book Tours)Buy the book: Amazon ~ Barnes & NobleRonald L. Ruiz author picMeet the author:After reading Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment at the age of 17, I knew I wanted to be a writer. But I knew nothing about the craft. My first novel, Happy Birthday Jesús, was published 36 years later. Surprisingly, it received good reviewsFor many years, I was a criminal defense attorney and at the end of my career a prosecutor, but I always managed to find time to write. What I saw and experienced during those years often serves as a basis for my writing. For me, learning how to write has been a long, continuous and, at times, torturous process. Now retired, I try to write every day and I feel fortunate that I have found something in writing that sustains me. I’m glad I persevered during all those years of rejection. More than anything, writing about what I see and experience in life has given me a sense of worth.Connect with the author: Website ~ FacebookOpinion:Last year, I had an opportunity to read a book titled Vicissitudes of Life by Wang Xiaoying which explored the idea of traditional China versus modern China and what it means for China's place in the world. Reading this book was just like reading Vicissitudes of Life, except for the fact that the story deals with multiple immigrants from Central America and takes place in 1940s to 1950s, while Vicissitudes of Life was a 1990s story, I think. I enjoy reading books in what I would call sparse writing where more is said with less, and Jesusita is just like that. I wasn't able to come up with what it could mean until I dreamt that perhaps its the clash of modern thoughts and ideas versus the ideas of yesteryear, and looking at the names of the two characters as well as the worlds that they inhabit, one could argue with the idea that the founder of religion (in form of Jesusita) is very idealistic and refuses to see reality for what it is, while the messenger (Angie) sees the reality for what it is and demands for society or faith to conform to stop turning blind eye towards the ugly and to stop judging it as wrong. All in all, a beautiful, breathtaking and an unforgettable read that's not likely to let the reader go for a very long time. This is for iRead Book Tours

“We have a collective responsibility—to bring about a more stable and more prosperous world” (Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund). It wouldn’t make headline news if a scientist declared that in today’s world, we are all connected and dependent on each other. But it would become a main feature if a scientist said there is a proven way we can not only benefit from our connectedness, but actually enjoy it. Completing the Circle: an empirically proven method for finding peace and harmony in life, presents precisely that. Over a period of four years, the Connection-Circle and Round-Table discussion formats have proven themselves as successful methods for resolving seemingly unsolvable conflicts, reassembling shattered relationships, and bringing together alienated families. These discussions have been taking place in the US, Europe, and Israel, all with resounding success. Now, for the first time, Dr. Laitman has written down the knowledge base of his successful method, and added easy-to-implement sample circles. As we try out these innovative circles, we will discover new depths in our connections with each other, and fresh ideas for managing our lives more peacefully and harmoniously both for ourselves and our loved ones.
